The girl who drank the moon review
Many books we read when we’re young want to show us lessons about life. True, the items we learn in them can stick with us forever. But lessons can be so dull. Luckily, Kelly Barnhill’s extraordinary 4th novel, “The Girl Who Drank the Moon,” educates about oppression, blind allegiance, and challenging the established order while immersing the reader in an exhilarating story full of magical creatures and derring-do.
My thoughts on the girl who drank the moon
This is a wondrously dark fantasy which is a symphony of gorgeous storytelling and lyrical imagery that completely entranced me as the magic within unfolded like a kaleidoscope of lightness and darkness.
All the elements of this story fit together like the pieces of a glorious, intricate jigsaw puzzle which, once they are brought together, creates a story of so much depth, beauty, pain, and release. The themes are deeply rooted and profound: the craving for power at the expense of humanity; the manipulation of the weak by the powerful; the inherent strength in good people to effect change; forces of nature, spirituality, and magic; and, the power of hope to overcome grief and sorrow.
This is a wondrously dark fantasy which is a symphony of gorgeous storytelling and lyrical imagery
Short Summary and my viewpoints
In the Protectorate, people live in a perpetual state of sorrow with the awful burden of knowing that a child will be sacrificed to the witch in the cursed forest each year. This is so that their community will be protected for another cycle. What the people don’t know is that the witch is not a child-eater, but saves each of the children from certain death.
The narrative has multiple viewpoints, but mainly switches between Luna’s story and Antain’s story. He is the Elder-in-Training who, at the demand of his despicable, power-hungry Uncle, the Grand Elder Gherland, carries Luna into the forest on the Day of Sacrifice, a horror so unbearable that her mother is driven to madness and locked up in the Tower presided over by Sister Ignatius, who has her secrets and needs. Filled with guilt and determined to stop the cruelty of the sacrifice, Antain begins to dig deeper into life in the Protectorate.
Tumblr media
The town of Sorrows
The people of a dingy, fog-covered town, nicknamed the town of Sorrows, are convinced that each year they need to sacrifice their youngest child to an evil witch or she is going to destroy them all. The town’s pompous, prissy Elders perpetuate this lie. They don’t believe the witch, but they know the lie makes for “a frightened people, a subdued people, a compliant people.” it’s a governing style that deserves a good thought.
The Elders of the town don’t know that the babies are collected by an honest witch named Xan. She carries them to a happier city with waiting families. They are called Star Children as a result of the journey Xan feeds the starlight. Unlike the morose children in the town, the babies thrive, and their eyes sparkle. It is an exquisite metaphor for the benefits of love and compassion.
A Rebelious mother in the girl who drank the moon
One mother rebels and refuses to offer up her baby. A young Elder in Training, Antain, watches in horror because the mother is grabbed by a ruthless all-female military force, and locked away like a madwoman. The baby is left within the woods as always, and Xan falls crazy together with her “gaze that reached into the tight strings of the soul and plucked, like the strings of a harp.” Because she is so loving, Xan unintendedly feeds the baby not starlight but moonlight, and therefore the baby becomes “mimicked.” Nothing for it, but Xan must bring the child up as her own. She names her Luna and for thirteen years contains her magical abilities.
Tumblr media
A Sentimental monster
Xan’s family also includes a sentimental monster who writes poetry and a pocket-size dragon. They all have memories of an unhappy and violent past that have got to be kept locked away. Why must they hide their sadness? And why is it so crucial for the town to be kept sad? When we learn the solution, the whole story falls into place and becomes impossible to place down.
It is Antain, hooked into the madwoman, who begins to suspect all isn’t what it seems. Barnhill excels at characters who don’t slot in, like Antain, whose face is roofed in scars.
Ned, in her previous novel, “The Witch’s Boy,” does not speak; Jack in “The Mostly True Story of Jack” and Princess Violet in “Iron Hearted Violet” are both unusual and lonely outsiders.
Some extra things I have noticed
Barnhill looks past their oddness to their humanity, and that is why we can identify ourselves with them. We then root for their success. As Luna approaches 13, we feel her magical powers. They are threatening to burst from her all along with other less appealing signs of puberty. We feel the fear when it’s disclosed that Antain’s baby is next in line to be sacrificed. And cheer when he and his wife come up with an idea. A chase, a quest, a planned murder: The story is so well-plotted the page’s fly by.
Barnhill’s language is lyrical and reminiscent of traditional fairy tales, but not childish or stereotypical. She writes impressively from a variety of points of view. Not only those of Luna and Xan but also of Sister Ignatia and the mother who has lost her mind.
Magic abounds, both beautiful and dangerous. Origami birds fly, but their paper wings also part and cut. Enchanted but incomprehensible images appear on rocks, and there are seven-league boots so “black… they appeared to bend the sunshine.” Almost every female character seems to possess some supernatural ability when needed, but maybe that’s another hidden truth: we’ve got the power to make things happen. Speak up. Ask questions. Trust your instincts. Valuable instructions for any reader.
Tumblr media
My conclusion about the girl who drank the moon
“The Girl Who Drank the Moon” is as exciting and stratified. As typical as “Peter Pan” or “The Wizard of Oz.” It too is about what it means to grow up and find where we belong. The young reader who devours it now only for fun will remember its lessons for years to return.
This is a beautifully dark and intricate story of the deep protective love and loyalty within the family. It has magic at its heart, which certainly cast a spell over me.

MEDITATIONS ON TALL SHIPS
An Ode to Math Rock Ancestry and an Indie Pop Hereafter
Tumblr media
For many a young person drifting hopelessly through those angst-stricken teenage years, music is the greatest comfort. Guiding lyrics sang in heartfelt tones can sooth in times of trouble, elevating an unassuming frontman into a sage of the stage. Reminiscing to oneself about having witnessed passionate performances from gigs past can bring about a warm nostalgia. In music scenes underground and with bands underloved, this is often accompanied by a feeling of privilege for having been one of the 30 or something strong audience, marooned inside a dingy venue taking shared solace in the evening’s escape. The pure release in the intimacy of these moments sets aside any lingering awkwardness of being in a room that everyone wishes was less empty. Nervous bands feel all-the-more appreciated, deservedly, as those hearty singalongs and well-timed nods prove the audience’s attentiveness and familiarity with the music.
Having seen them a dozen or so times in the past 8 years, Tall Ships embody these experiences like no other band. Ric Phethean intonates profound mantras with a sheepish innocence, an uncertainty that belies his impact in the room. Lyrics explore both the introspective and the exultant whilst instruments march along in tandem; the pensive plods along the keyboard in Vessels or Ode to Ancestors flow flawlessly into the pent-up energy of Hit the Floor or Plate Tectonics. I remember with limpid clarity the moment I heard ‘Oscar’ for the first time. On a tour preceding the release of Everything Touching, new tunes were working their way into the set. Out of an enchanting glut of songs filled with familiar sing-along anthems came a riff I had not heard before, from a band that – on recollection, I realise - were primed to air new material but also nervous about the abreaction they knew they were about to undergo. As the song rose to its crescendo (in that typically-tall-ships manner) I heard for the first time the line ‘I love you more than you know’; a heartfelt refrain pouring from exhausted lungs. Then bassist Matt Parker, crouched and cowering in the ache of the moment, paused and took respite, summoning enough energy to longingly and heart-wrenchingly reach for a lightly crumpled photograph of a loved one, sellotaped to the cabinet of his bass amp. ‘Oscar’ is about familial bonds, friends, ancestry and the joy of the unspoken contracts we assume with the people we love and care for. I’ve no compulsion to know who it was that Matt was paying tribute to so touchingly, to know that they ‘share more than blood’ and that their ‘heartbeat is the most important thing’ to him served to consecrate that moment as one of the most moving I have experienced from live music.
Tumblr media
Approaching Tall Ships’ long-awaited second album with this rich personal history behind me was difficult. Having waited an extra month due to pressing problems, the time that had elapsed between the release of Will to Life - first aired back at ArcTanGent in 2015 - and the first full playthrough was nearing two years. How would this new album land, mixing upbeat festival songs by now so familiar with newer, mellower and more mournful offers. Long time collaborator and producer James Field had become a fully-fledged member, reducing the live performance workload of Ric to the benefit of his already engaging performance style. But how might a fourth man wholly focused on the keys in the studio play out on the album? Any nervous anticipation I had was shattered and reconciled about a minute into the album. The opener Road Not Taken is a perfect harbinger of the contrasting styles to come, the split sections  encapsulating the yin and yang of the album in one bifurcated song. Once the stripped-down opening has settled in, and whispered vocals and synths have passed, the band punch in with full percussion and guitar, giving a satisfying glimpse into the indie rock anthems to come. Amongst the most radio friendly of these anthems are the two tracks released as music video singles, Will to Life and Mediations on Loss, featuring thumping rhythms and nods to old influences like Biffy Clyro, with massive hook-filled choruses and a crunchy guitar-driven tone. On the softer end of the pop spectrum, Lucille darts in with an interlocked rhythm section reminiscent of early Bombay Bicycle Club, though Tall Ships make their own mark with a chorus of vocal lines - taken from all parts of the song and interwoven - that works so surprisingly well as an ending cacophony. Testament to the true accessibility of this album, Lost & Found features a short guitar riff that sounds like the Arctic Monkeys track ‘That’s Where You’re Wrong’, showcasing the indie band making ballads with a nostalgic 80’s tone.
Ending on a note of relative optimism, Day by Day is a bittersweet anthem for repair and renewal, a chance ‘to redefine why it is you live your life’. These sentiments define this charming track as it fights its way towards being optimistic but ultimately remains grounded in the futile mire of reality: ‘we need to do something before we get too old.’  The tone is at times upbeat, the lyrics never too saccharine, the sad reflections thus far end with a glimmer of hope, like watching a split of daylight radiate between two grey clouds.
A word for the two tracks hidden away on the C side of the vinyl could not go amiss. Something of a concealed title track, Impressions creates a purposeful backdrop of layered synths as Ric roars out with a lyrical drive-by of the albums themes. A wallop of uplifting guitar slowly builds in a cinematic moment of anticipation reminiscent of their debut album closer, Murmurations; this fiery post-rock instrumental as engrossing as Rock Action era Mogwai. Meanwhile, Purge finishes the offerings of this album with a little guitar groove, jumping and darting, whilst the vision of Impressions is brought to a close with a plangent piano refrain.
As ever, Tall Ships’ drum work is understated, a highlight from Everything Touching being the simple fx-laden beat that starts and underlines Idolatry. Once again – and more ear-catching than ever - Jamie shows how best to serve the song by writing simple, crunchy motifs with the odd beat chopped off, reverb slapped on or percussive tone changed, as to excite the ear on the first listen but to let it settle in hypnotically upon repeat. Meanwhile, Matt’s complimentary bass riffs range from the pulsing grooves in Lucille to the thumping persistence of Meditations on Loss to the warm and wide undercurrents of Home.
Tumblr media
Along this well-trodden path from largely instrumental, intricately looped and angular math-rock towards a more careful pop sound sit bands like Enemies and, more recently, Waking Aida. Similarly, Tall Ships’ turn from dense loops of interwoven riffs to an indie pop tone traces a clear path. From the spoken word samples on their first EP, to the big swooning vocal lines on ‘Chemistry’, to the more vocally driven parts of Everything Touching, now we have the complete package; nine tracks where vocal hooks don’t just adorn great riffs as an afterthought, but provide the foundation for the song. The stories and sentiments told feel as if they are influencing the style of the instruments for the first time in the band’s work.
Resultantly, the song structures are built around the lyrical drive too. And so, although the band have adopted a more indie alt-pop tone, outside of the radio-friendly singles they still have a penchant for longer songs with unusual musical throughflows. This pushes them to rewarding places. Ric’s unwinding narratives compel the band to forego the traditional verse-chorus set up in favour of one long, building and unfolding track that slowly envelopes those brave enough to listen attentively. In doing so, the band avoid a feeling of disjointedness; no longer treading back along old paths with a chorus repeated wholesale, but forging a new one on which Ric’s evocative message can develop. This allows songs like Home and Petrichor to germinate organically, to be as immersive sonically as the lyrics are in their narrative form.
Since the release of the B-side Send News from 2011’s single Hit the Floor, I have been enamoured with Tall Ships at their most delicate. When the bombast of pulsing drums and angular riffs subsides, you are left – in Idolatry, Ode to Ancestors and another B-side, Life Goes On - with layers of vocal, ripples of piano and delicate refrains to sing along to. For this reason, the lilting Lost & Found is without a doubt my personal highlight of this release, and arguably the best showcase of Ric’s unique ability never to waste a good lyric on a half-hearted melody, but to propel each line into significance with a memorable one. Lyrically, Ric writes the textbook for demonstrating how profound it can be to never worry about profundity, but to know the first words that come to mind often capture the idea at its most transparent and honest. On this theme, it is surprising that after the many years the band have had to self-produce the album, achingly crafting every single note and tone of each overdub, the album still sounds the result of an effortless, unstudied process. A common criticism from those that have been following the band since their guitar loop-driven early days is that they’ve lost their exciting mathyness. This was perfectly crystallised to me at ATG in 2014 when (in a drunkenly slurred Scottish accent) a young man confided in me his belief that ‘Tall Ships are wee bit too poppy.’ Well, I’d obviously argue after having written this ludicrously long review, I think they’re exactly poppy enough: utterly hypnotic, effortless, memorable, but still showcasing intricate, complex and thoughtful songs with stunning musicianship and a ‘less is more but 5 sets of backing vocals and 3 synth tones still aren’t quite enough’ sort of feeling. A masterful album and their best release to date. Another minute would be too intense to bear.

It’s midday and I have just boarded a Tranitalia service from Firenze Santa Maria headed for Venezia St. Lucia, most popularly know as Venice. My journey through Italy has been so cathartic and, as evidenced by the frequent and impromptu naps, badly needed. By the time I finally boarded the flight to Rome a few days ago, my mind and body were equally exhausted and it was beginning to show.
2017 has been a year of stretching and growth unlike any other for me. No prior experience prepared me for the challenges I have encountered both professionally and personally. Perhaps most challenging, for me, were the tests of character for which there can be no cramming. Having successfully broken my own personal record for days lived, I decided, almost on a whim,  that it was time for a break and I am glad I did. I’ve not been here for long, but as I have walked the streets of Rome and experienced the sunsets in the Tuscan valley, there are some thoughts that have nested on my mind that I would like to share with you. So, in a bid to not make this long post any longer, here are my 5 thoughts from Italy.
Tumblr media
5 Thoughts From Italy
Create space between your current pace and your limits.
I’ve certainly not always been very good at pacing myself in various aspects of my life, whether that be professionally or personally. This has often led to seasons of burn out, lethargy and mediocre performance. We all need to have a gap between the current pace at which we are operating, professionally, financially or relationally and our limits in those areas. We also need to know our limits.
If you constantly operate at your limits, as I often do, you are unlikely to respond appropriately when exogenous shocks hit your world. Imagine, for a moment, that you are a driver that is currently driving way above the speed limit when you suddenly encounter a large object in the middle of the road. The outcome of how  you respond to that object at high speed is vastly different to the outcome were you travelling within the designated speed limit. This is the  power of observing limits! This is why it is so important to take time out to rest as well as to define better boundaries so that margin is created in your life. So what is thought number 1? Get some rest and create some boundaries.
Tumblr media
The unexamined life is not worth living.
Closely linked to the importance of taking time out to rest is the importance of taking time out to reflect. Simply put, it’s the opportunity to pause at this powerful question; “What was I thinking when I… *fill in the blank* until you come to some sober conclusions. The everyday business as usual activities of our lives often don’t allow us the opportunity to look at past choices from a different perspectives.
I take a journal with me on my travels and as thoughts come to me, I scribble. Those scribbles have often been the paths to the underlying reasons for some of my option-taking. They have also been equally surprising and convicting, even encouraging at times. What are your guiding principles when it comes to decision making? What would you do differently if you knew then what you know now? Here’s to thought number 2, reflection.
Tumblr media
Vivere il memento
Whether it is the Colosseum in Rome or the Piaza de MichaelAngiolo in Florence there is something so striking about seeing beautiful art and scenery. After one has taken the obligatory selfie, one lingers there for a while and takes it all in. I have to admit that it’s not just beauty seen through the eyes that strikes me. I have been silenced by the tastes of food and intense and unique flavours of Italian wine. A well done amatriciana accompanied by a glass of the finest *insert good wine* signal the beginning of a celebration in my insides. An actual party.
For the first time in a while, I am eating to enjoy not just to ‘not starve’ and now I am wondering WHY I don’t make a ritual of the enjoyment of food on a daily basis. It dawns on me that food, art and scenery are not pleasures we have to leave our homes to enjoy but they are there all around, waiting for us to lift up our heads from our phones and ingest them intentionally. When was the last time you sat for lunch with no limit on time and allowed yourself to indulge your taste buds in something interesting and different? My tastes buds have made it clear to me that it had been far too long. A toast to thought number 3, live in the moment.
Cultures are teachers
If I had to pick one word to describe the Italian people, the word would be passionate. Even the atmosphere in the streets is conducive to falling in love. As I walk down the narrow cobbled streets I encounter violinists filling the warm air with beautiful music. I see young couples walking hand in hand and observe an old couple staring longingly into each other’s eyes. I long to discover my role in the present and unfolding soap opera.
Tumblr media
EVERYTHING in Italy is done passionately. The food is cooked with the diner in mind, the musician plays as if it is his last concert and the clothing is made from the finest fabrics. The residents here, far more than the tourists who simply pass through, seem to have figured out how to appreciate each day as unique. There is no rush. They laugh out loud, they have long lunches, they pause to listen to poets at street corners and they invent wild flavours of gelato. They live, and I envy them. Thought number 4, experience new cultures, it may change your perspective on life.
Get your groove back (or find it).
If you have beheld the statue of David or the Cathedral de Santa Maria, you may like I, wonder how these marvels came to be. Who was Michael Angiolo? Where did Leonardo da Vinci come from? How did Galileo come up with his theories? There is no doubt that these were outstanding and remarkable individuals but there is also something that strikes me as profound… they were more like you and I than they were different. The only distinction, it appears, is that they found their purpose and leaned in to it. They found their respective grooves. They discovered why on earth they were here and did EVERYTHING possible to fulfill that mission. Why on earth are you here? What were you born for? Will chapels be erected in your honour and will your artefacts fill museums?
Tumblr media
I strongly believe we are all here on earth for the accomplishment of a unique and important mission and we must give our best effort to discovering what that mission could be. So thought number 5 is simple, make like Stella and get your groove back!
I must now end this note and go and explore the intricate canals of Venice. Before I run off I will say this, don’t waste another waiting to be happy or at peace with yourself and your world. Go out there and live.
Ciao!

Twin Soul Energy Report ~ 3.3.3 Christ Seal Activation, Huge Breakthroughs for Divine Feminines
By matahariji
Dearest Beloveds,
Greetings of the most high. We come forward now in this moment of your time with great news to share with all of you ascending twinsoul light workers.
The bombardment of gamma-ray activity is perpetually increasing in intensity as we move forward in 2019. There are many who are currently experiencing a settling of these intense energies but for others there will be unprecedented levels of purging that will be currently taking place in this Potent energetic gateway.
For those of you who are experiencing these intense Ascension symptoms, it is highly recommended that you rest when you need to, that you stay on top of your hydration, and where possible you turn to natural remedies such as raw garlic, manuka honey, elderberry syrup, colloidal silver, ginger, and turmeric etc. All of these remedies are extremely powerful, particularly at assisting with inflammatory conditions whether they be digestive or muscular. As ever we highly recommend getting yourself tested out allopathically if your intuition guides you to do so.
We would like to now take a moment now to speak about the current energetics that are being played out between the Divine masculine and divine feminine collective at the moment.
With the assistance of the two January eclipses, the Divine feminine collective was able to finally once and for all free herself from her false attachment to Old 3D timelines pertaining to feminine submission, feminine disempowerment and waiting for the Divine masculine in order to fully complete ones mission. These Old 3D timelines kept the divine feminine vibrationally misaligned with her hearts desires and kept her in the frequency of feeling the urge to chase after the Divine masculine. But as we spoke about in our last Ascension report, it is pure Folly for the flower to chase after the bee. The flower must be “still” and be aligned in the remembrance that they are pure source energy and they must emit their fragrance in order to attract the bee.
Within the awakening divine feminine Collective, momentous breakthroughs have occurred and many divine feminines, for the first time on this journey are finding themselves completely detached from the Divine masculine. Detached from wondering about what they are up to, and detached from caring about what happens in the future between them.
These detachment frequencies are having a huge effect on the Divine masculine consciousness, who previously was able to siphon off the Divine feminine energies through her intense need to chase after the Divine masculine. In the momentum of her chasing she was inadvertently scattering all of her divine feminine source frequencies all over the Divine masculine and his Karmic relationship.
However with this new detachment, the Divine masculine is realising very very swiftly that the Karmic partner is not his ideal counterpart and many DMs are going through a period where the wool is being pulled from above their eyes and for the first time they’re able to see clearly that the karmic partner in many ways has been an impostor- imposing as the DMs divine feminine counterpart.
The greatest analogy that we can come up with to explain this current situation is that Mother Father God has been very very busy cooking up these divine relationships, however before the eclipses of January the Divine feminines were hovering over the pot and doing their best to add the seasoning and spices to the pot, however this was holding up the cooking process and was over seasoning the content inside the pot – the Divine feminine was ordered on an extremely high level to withdraw her energies from this simmering pot, and the Divine feminine collective en masse realised that what is needed right now in order to support the Divine masculine to fully awaken, is the DF to withdraw her input so that the DM of his own devices comes to his own realisation that he is a twin soul who has incarnated to be in the most extraordinary blissful eternal Union with his divine counterpart who was co-created with him at the very very moment of creation.
Another way to explain this metaphorically is that if you crack an egg from the outside what is inside will die and wither away,  but if you sit back patiently and allow the egg to be cracked from the inside then this produces life.
The energy is now or building up towards the 3.3.3. Christ seal activation portal date. We are being strongly guided to work with the Potent numerological energies of 3.3.3. which is a master number. The 3.3.3. codon is correlated to the energetics of the Divine Trinity which refers to the Holy Mother, the Holy Father and the divine Christ/Sophia child.
On this particular portal date of the 3rd of March, we are being guided to fully activate the Christ seal that is stored in the claustrum in the human brain.
33 is representative of the 33 vertebrae that lead from the base of the spine to the top of the spine. The Ascension of one’s consciousness is intricately connected to the number 33 and the raising of one’s own kundalini energy from the base of the spine, throughout all of the chakras and energy systems so that it may reach the pineal gland and the claustrum, where this sacred Christ oil is stored, awaiting the souls predestined triggers, that will activate the full release of this sacred oil.
This is extremely high level spiritual work to be involved with, and please know that all of those who come forward to be part of this transmission will receive a profound level of assistance with regards to fully stabilizing in their full Christ consciousness avatar self frequencies.
We are also being guided to work with the higher self of Nikola Tesla who, as we know channeled the means for human beings to access free energy, but  was blocked by the Old dark forces that were, Who quickly realised that they would be unable to make any money from free energy.
Nikola Tesla is an ascended master whom is working very closely with the earthly realm currently, and in the 3.3.3 transmission, we are being strongly guided to remove on the etheric plane, all plans and intentions for the 5G agenda, and in its place we are being guided to fully empower and activate Nikola tesla’s free energy grid.
We in the transmission groups have achieved unimaginable results from coming together in this particular vibration, with these particular intentions, and Please know, we will achieve miraculous results this time…..it really is imperative that as many beloveds come forward to take part in this extremely important transmission as possible..
please see below for full details to book
Please know dearest hearts, that you have nothing to fear – what is yours will always be yours.
Your greatest purpose now is to relax and trust in your higher self and its plan for your evolution and unfoldment.
Always remember to show up in your radiance with unconditional kindness to all whom you meet.
We have arrived at the 11th hour……
The time of the great transition is upon us.
Remember to breathe deeply and know implicitly that all is well
In love and light Jenji and the white wolf tribe

Walt Disney World
Rivers of Light: We Are One Show to debut this summer at Disney’s Animal Kingdom
A little over two years ago, the nighttime celebration at Disney’s Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World, debuted featuring illuminated lantern floats, beautiful imagery inspired by nature, fascinating performers, a soaring musical score, and innovative special effects.
And this summer, an updated and enhanced version of the show entitled Rivers of Light: We Are One will debut on the Discovery River Amphitheater at Disney’s Animal Kingdom starting May 24th in time for Memorial Day Weekend.
“Rivers of Light: We Are One introduces additional, stunning imagery and familiar animal characters from Disneynature films, along with a colorful tapestry of classic moments from Disney animation, to express our connection with animals and the emotions and milestones we all share in our journey through the great circle of life,” according to Shawn Slater on the Disney Parks Blog. “The music of “Rivers of Light: We Are One” weaves together the original musical score and familiar Disney themes to create a powerful arrangement that inspires and carries us through moments of discovery, fun, friendship, fear, love and family.”
If you aren’t familiar with the Rivers of Light nighttime show, here is a description:
Eastern festival traditions merge with innovative technology to make Rivers of Light a visual treat unlike any other.
The lush lagoon setting is a central character itself—an ever-changing canvas for the unveiling of an unforgettable tale. Discovery River comes alive with light as a thousand flickering fireflies lead a captivating procession across the water.
Giant floating flowers perform an intricate water ballet as glowing boats drift by. As the story unfolds, original video projections and choreographed laser animation combine to illuminate moments of the celebration like living pixie dust.
Before your eyes, clusters of lantern light shift and shape into stunning animal spirit forms—the Tiger, Turtle, Elephant and Owl. Spellbound, you’re transported across Asian jungles and tropical oceans to African savannas and North American mountains.
Your dreamlike journey culminates in a triumphant finale of song, light, color and earthly elements that leaves you with a profound sense of peace and oneness with nature.
Know Before You Go – Rivers of Light
As seating is limited, please plan to arrive early. FastPass+ selections or dining packages are recommended.
This show is performed on select nights and runs for approximately 15 minutes. Be sure to check the Entertainment Schedule, the My Disney Experience app, or pick up the Times Guide in the park for the most up-to-date schedule.
Due to the nearby animal residents, the enchanting show does not include fireworks.

What Prisons and Universities have in common?
It is the Summer of 1971. Phil sits in his office, patiently watching. He sees everything his prisoners do, and everything his guards do to his prisoners. He wonders how hostile and devilishly inhumane things get, yet he watches and lets the scenes unfold. Because only when he lets his prison run wild would he get closer to what he’s searching for.
This is the setting of the 2015 film, The Stanford Prison Experiment. It’s also a true story.
Phil here is Philip Zimbardo, Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Stanford University. The Stanford Prison of Experiment of 1971, now infamous, was his attempt to understand how social situations distort morality and turn mostly good people into evil. It was a dramatic simulation, done with 24 college students divided randomly into two groups of prisoners and guards. After converting a hallway at Stanford University into a temporary prison, arrests were staged, the prisoners were documented and put into prison cells with steel bars, and the guards stood on duty. There was even a “Hole” for solitary confinement. The corridor was the prison yard, the only space outside of the cells where prisoners were allowed. “The Stanford County Jail” was meticulously planned.
The experiment, originally designed to run for 2 weeks, had to be called off after 6 days
Why? The guards began abusing the prisoners so much it got out of control. Prisoners suffered emotional break-downs under the verbal and physical assault, and the guards seemed to be enjoying it. In other words, Philip Zimbardo had turned an otherwise perfectly normal set of college students to maniacs. He did it simply by giving them a platform, an elaborate role play of which the setting was perfect to exercise abusive authority.
Based on this study, and the lifelong work that followed afterward (which included a study of the mistreatment of prisoners in Abu Ghraib by the US Army) Zimbardo is convinced that all of us, given the right motivations, are capable of an unspeakable act of evil. In a 2004 Ted Talk, he pointed out that transformation of character (in this case, from good to evil) could manifest because of the following reasons:
Dispositional: You’re a Bad Apple. You choose to be evil, it’s inside you.
Situational: You’re essentially a good person, but some external factors force you to become evil. You’re in a Bad Barrel.
Systemic: The broader political, economic, cultural and social factors contribute to pushing you towards evil. You’re a victim of the Bad Barrel-Makers.
He says:
That line between good and evil is permeable. Any of us can move across it… I argue that we all have the capacity for love and evil — to be Mother Theresa, to be Hitler or Saddam Hussein. It’s the situation that brings that out.
I watched the movie and the TED Talk two years ago. Recently, it occurred to me that I never did give any serious thought to what parallels could be drawn between this story of evil and what I see in the world around me.
Interestingly enough, one of the first things I thought of was our universities. Perhaps the systemic element appealed to me.
Every single year, heinous crimes are committed under the guise of “ragging” in almost all state universities in the country. The abuse is not only verbal, it’s glaringly physical and even sexual. The oppressors are students themselves, taking out the full breadth of their misguided superiority complexes on freshmen. Usually, no one takes notice. Even when deaths occur, the initial outcry dies down in a matter of days, and the perpetrators go back to their old ways.
The authorities are in complicity
Despite all its absurdity and wickedness, ragging has simply become a part of university life in Sri Lanka.
Unjust authority over the lives of others should not be encouraged. Yet our universities are doing just that. (Image source: Daily Mirror)
A sizable chunk of the university crowd, including the ones who’ve been subject to it, regard ragging as an essential element of the orientation process. Now, they’re not referring to the inhumane and extreme acts, but to the more arguably “fun” ones (like walking up to a girl and offering her a flower on your knees.) I disagree. Every act involves some form of humiliation of one’s self or another’s. More importantly, they serve as a vehicle of brutal satisfaction to the perpetrators, one that gives them the sense of unjust authority over others. That should never be allowed.
“As you know, madness is like gravity…all it takes is a little push.”
-The Joker
So, what allows a destructive and regressive sub-culture like this to flourish? Zimbardo gave us the answer when he articulated the systemic nature of evil. What we’ve done for years on end is normalizing and institutionalizing the exercise of unjust power. The educational institutions we hold in high regard as bastions of knowledge have simply turned into passive sponsors of crime. It’s alarming how, even after making the act of ragging a criminal offense, it’s being continued gleefully by the corrupt few.
It’s unnerving how much Zimbardo’s prison and our universities have in common
One of his observations was how institutions anonymize the perpetrators of evil. This detaches them from their real selves and gives them the freedom to resort to evil ways. In our universities, intricate networks of pro-rag students, academia, alumni, and authorities provide the luxury of anonymity to individual perpetrators.
In the Stanford Prison Experiment, guards were given uniforms and sun-glasses which gave them a different identity. The guard facade, not the college student behind it, was allowed to do evil. (Image source: prisonexp.org)
In Zimbardo’s study, the prisoners were dehumanized by giving them a number, in our universities the same things happen when freshmen are given profane nicknames (or “cards” as they’re known in local discourse.)
There’s more. Zimbardo also identified the role of blind obedience to authority and uncritical conformity to group norms in transforming good characters to evil. Sounds familiar?
All this brings us to a shocking realization. The students who humiliate their fellow freshmen are not necessarily evil. Yes, there could be a few bad apples, as could be anywhere, but circumstances draw the rest into this. They find themselves in the wrong situations that are enabled by all the wrong systems we’re cherished for years. Unknowingly, they too are victims. They find themselves in a position of power and just give in. This is power without oversight that should never have ended up in their hands.
If you’re reading through this thinking
“I’ve never been part of any ragging, nor do I support it. I’m not evil,” hold your horses for a bit. You and I are a part of this, too. The following quote from the movie sums it up:
I was running experiments of my own. I wanted to see just what kind of verbal abuse people could take before they start objecting, before they start lashing back. And it really surprised me that nobody said anything to stop me. Nobody said ‘Come on man, you can’t say those things to me, those things are sick.’ Nobody said that. And nobody questioned my authority at all. And it really shocked me. I started to abuse people so much it started to get so profane and still, people didn’t say anything.
When we choose to show passive tolerance to this horrendous act, we’re no better than the perpetrators themselves. And the cliched (yet profound) articulation, “Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted; the indifference of those who should have known better; the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most; that has made it possible for evil to triumph.,” comes to mind.
We’re all products of our circumstances. (Image source: The New York Times)
That is why I think it’s important that more people — yes, even the ones like me who have never set foot in a state university — talk about this. False ideologies like ragging should be deplored, for we will be saving legions of young people not from who they are, but from who they could turn into.
