You’ve Lost a Lot of Blood

Eric Larocca “Ambrose is my canvas—my grotesque creation in the making”

In reading the reviews of others I find that many lack the ability to look into overlapping themes of the two narratives being portrayed for the reader. I find it almost amusing how Larocca can create two varying styles throughout these different passages. In the journals Martyr writers and the voice over in audio recordings he speaks academically and in a way where you know he, for lack of better words, thinks he’s the shit. This isn’t unusual behavior for serial killers either, holding themselves in a way that exudes confidence and even arrogance. Where as in the short stories he writes the writing is almost juvenile in a way. It doesn’t compare to his other writing styles even with his poetry he still had a way about speaking, but this novella is entirely different. The way he speaks with Ambrose may be the most telling of his character. He is portraying a character, not being his authentic self, not really, but Ambrose still knows things about him that others do not. They are intimate, but Marytr will not fully let him in.

This isn’t really a thought out analysis and may not be the authors intended perception of his characters, but I needed somewhere to throw my thoughts.

Edit: I wrote this before I finished the novel, now that I’m done I’m sort of amused at things I pointed out here being discussed in some of the final chapters. Now that I’ve finished I’d like to say that the reason he killed was because it was something authentic to him. The murders were of his own design, though even then they weren’t entirely of his it was still something he felt he had made unlike the pieces of literature.
