I'm still rewatching yugioh and reminiscing about how into the shipping culture me and many of my old friends used to be back in the day. and looking back on it, fun as the shipping was, that was entirely missing the point, wasn't it?
yugioh is one of the few shonen animes I recall that never had any endgame pairings. everything that leaned romantic was only ever implied- mai and jounouchi, anzu with atem and yugi, honda and shizuka (and honda and miho in season 0), even rebecca's blatant crush on yugi in season four- none of that ever ended up with the characters getting together. and of the more plausible queer ships- atem and yugi, atem and kaiba- never was there anything more than subtext and innuendo, at best.
I mean to be fair it was the 90s
what was romanticized to hell and back though? friendship. and for as much as that kinda got memed back in the day via things like the abridged series and everybody and their mom mocking anzu's "friendship speeches", like...wasn't that the power of this show in the first place? wasn't that the thing that drew people to it? because it wasn't the card games. the card games were fun and all but that wasn't why you stuck around, and it's not what the story was really about.
I dunno, it's just refreshing watching this old show from the 90s/2000s and getting hit over the head with how radically un-romantic it really is. it's not a given that the characters are in love with each other, and it's not a given that they'll end up together- but it is a given that they're gonna be friends, and that's what's going to win the day.
and outside of like, my little pony, it is functionally unheard of to have a story where friendship is placed above romance in the hierarchy of love.
yugioh was kind of radical in its own way.

I’m asking you this because you’re someone I follow who’s into YuGiOh. It looks kind of interesting and I want to get into it, where do I start? The internet is unhelpful
Ooooh!!! We got one!!!
YGO has multiple series, but I highly suggest starting with the OG series. That's the one with Yuugi. It will sometimes be listed as "Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters."
Yu-Gi-Oh is kind of a funky series in that it's about the ghost of a 3000-year-old pharaoh possessing a teenager, and various dramas from the ghost's previous life (which the ghost does not remember) surfacing, including the vengeful spirit of an ancient Egyptian theft and a cult that basically worships the pharaoh. But it's also very aggressively about card games.
Some people like it for the card game aspect. If that's what you're interested in, I'd suggest starting from the beginning of the anime. If you want to delve more into the "possessed teenager" thing, I'd suggest starting from the beginning of the manga-- the first few books are about Yami Yugi using a variety of magic games to punish Yugi's bullies. Multiple people get set on fire. (There's an anime adaptation of this part of the manga that fans call "Season 0" which was super hard to find when I was a middle schooler obsessing over YGO, but I believe you should be able to find it now. The animation style is pretty different but it's fun.)
(If you actually want to PLAY the card game, maybe consider starting with one of the video games? The anime does not follow IRL rules, and they're especially shenanigan-y in the first season.)
The YGO dub and sub are pretty different. The dub was highly localized for white bread American families, and in some ways it's super nostalgic for that era of anime and in places genuinely funny ("You're a third rate duelist with a fourth rate deck!" is a meme from the dub). On the other hand, they made some changes like.... there's a bunch of duel where the players are rigged into Jigsaw-like contraptions that will kill you horribly or chop off your legs, and in the dub they change all this "go to the shadow realm." So if you like horror or more serious dialogue, I'd go for the sub.
Some people ALSO just watch YuGiOh the Abridged Series. I've only seen a little of it so I cannot comment on what this will get you besides a lot of memes.
