I’m sad to say that this fell flat. It has such high potential of being great, but I think the concept was just too complicated to be smashed together into only two volumes. Especially since this volume introduced more plot points that will never be answered.

Once again, the art was amazing and it was an interesting read, but it was too quickly done.

about | scarlet is a yuri manga duology, drawn/written by yuino chiri and published by ichijinsha in japan, with publisher seven seas entertainment facilitating a western release. the first volume has explicit themes, however the second volume delves into nsfw content, the latter of which may be seen as partially relevant to the events of its main story. scarlet follows our protagonists, iris (right) and finé (left), with the latter working as a werewolf hunter and the former being her assistive companion.

history | scarlet was once a title featured in yurihime, a manga anthology magazine that was released monthly. chosen out of the portfolio pieces that yuino had submitted to its publisher, the manga creator would then go on to deliver 10 chapters worth of the series, published in the magazine, before the project ended. after its finalization, the chapters were compiled into books before being made available for sale. sometime after its initial release, the books were also picked up for translation for western audiences.

though the series has ended, the author is still known for some occasional sketches about scarlet. yuino has expressed interest about continuing the series if possible in the future, with leads for plot points and further exploration into the series made visible by background elements and details illustrated in the latter half of volume 2.

one notable event that occurred during its initial publishing included the presence of a yuri manga voting competition held online. given feedback, yuino had volunteered to include an nsfw chapter in the upcoming chapters granted the public voted for scarlet in the competition. while it didn't win, it ranked well enough that yuino felt justified in delivering on their promise. this chapter, along with more nsfw themes may be found in volume 2 of this title.

notability | while there are quite a number of titles released to western audiences that are wlw, most of them focus on the concept of daily school lives. yuri media is known for this as a core concept due to japan's history in the wlw genre, which makes scarlet an incredibly fresh take as a title despite featuring elements that have already been spotted (even overdone) in western media. it features the werewolf trope, however their existence in the narrative plays similarly to a vampire's, with lineages, seduction and social deduction/manipulation coming into play alongside the expected frame of a gothic/fantasy setting. adding onto it is a deliberate desperation instilled into the characters noted as unwilling subjects to the antagonists' whims. the manga is also unafraid to feature mature themes, standard of a dark tale, though they may feel shallow due to the short nature of the manga's release. the exploration about its vices, nsfw or otherwise, leaves a lot of speculation to the viewer about what its implications could entail and what might occur in the future if the series ever got picked up again for continuation.

It is so hard to find a yuri manga that isn’t a contemporary school trope. I guess they’re okay, but for me high school was a long time ago and was never of any interest to me, even when I was in it, so if I can find literally any other theme and setting in a manga, I’ll take it. Chiri Yuino’s “Scarlet” was giving me everything I wanted and more. Unlike most yuri manga I’ve found (or manga, in general, to be honest) there was an incredible amount of worldbuilding. This manga wasn’t just about werewolves, but the author’s own take on what werewolves are and do, how they are made and destroyed, how society treats and mistreats them. There were secrets, conspiracies, and plot twists at every turn. The characters were fully rendered, with backstories and hidden agendas fleshed out for even the secondary characters. I’m telling you, this shocked the hell out of me and hooked me from the first page. And then it was cancelled?! 3/4 of the way into volume 2, the manga just ended. On a cliffhanger - a confusing cliffhanger. I have no idea what happened. It seemed open-ended, but in a way that left me unsure of both whether the main characters remained in a relationship or whether they are even still alive. I don’t know who fired this mangaka, but I hate you. lol You stole my favorite yuri away from me. You ruined what was shaping up to be one of my top favorite manga series. And, as a Goodreads reviewer noted, you disrespected your readers by wasting our time and robbing us of a finished story.

The art in this is gorgeous. The concept is super interesting.

However, I don’t think it was executed that well. For a plot like this, I feel it should have been longer and more complex. Instead it’s very fast paced and packed together, which results in plot holes and confusion.

From the cover, I assumed Finé would be a vampire, but that isn’t the case? Iris is a werewolf, but so is Finé? But is Finé just a different type since she transformed from the drug? It’s not explained. I hope it will be in the next volume.

Also, I’d love more of Finé and Iris’s relationship to be shown so I can feel a stronger connection to them.

P.S. I didn’t like that the succubus was portrayed as a child. It made me uncomfortable.
