WHAT’S IN THE BORDERLAND?
My personal thoughts on the Netflix series Alice in the Borderland
Watching movies became a great hobby after the pandemic because there’s no lack of time to waste. From actions to dramas, from Western to Asian, from Hollywood to Indie, I binge-watched until I have lost count of how many of those I’ve finished or those I’ve gave up watching. What caught my attention while searching for a good watch – is the series Alice in the Borderland, recommended with high rating so I free up my schedule and gave it a try.
Alice in the Borderland is a Netflix live-action adaptation of the Japanese Manga (Japanese Comics) with the same name, authored by Hara Aso. They were trouble-makers transferred in a parallel world where they must play games with their life at stake. The more they win, the longer they live. For all the times Netflix disappointed me, I did not have any expectations thus making the series look better to me than it already is.

The series was about a gamer Arisu (which is the way the Japanese pronounce Alice) played by one of Japan’s most iconic actor today Yamazaki Kento and his friends Chota and Karube played by Yuki Morinaga and Keita Machida, respectively. Aside from the suspense of the series, the friendship of these three individuals is a highlight.

Arisu was hated by his Father and his brother as he has an addiction with gaming and a NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) and his only emotional support are his two friends who also lives in a harsh environment – Chota who always gives almost all his salary to his mother who supports a cult and Karube who was in love with a Mafia’s woman. They treat each other as brothers and acts as a support for one another. But in one of the games where their loyalty to their friendship will be exchanged for their life, it seems all the tables have turned.
A test of intelligence, endurance, practical abilities and loyalty was the point of every game where the latter took the life of his dearest pals. Arisu then began to doubt himself and his abilities as he had experience failure and wreckage due to his inability to think of the right solution.

This series does not only portray the horror of losing people but also the importance of life and what comes after death. The movie also reflects human emotions of pride, greed, wraith and the question of what are we willing to give up in order to live longer than anyone.
Alice in the Wonderland is a place where happiness is and the magic that humans always desire to have while Alice in the Borderland is a series where sadness and how humans manages to survive against the magic that they could not control.
This blog is my personal thoughts of the series and my opinion as someone who have a lot of basis to highly recommend Alice in the Borderland. If you are skeptical to watch this series, do not worry, it contains a lot of important lessons to learn. It is not recommended for people who cannot stand blood and deaths.
