Double Drive: The Detailed Plot Description for “Double Drive ~Ryuu no Kizuna~”

WARNING: This post contains major spoilers for "Double Drive ~Ookami no Okite~“ and "Double Drive ~Ryuu no Kizuna~”.

DOUBLE DRIVE ~RYUU NO KIZUNA~

Directly following the events of "Double Drive ~Ookami no Okite~", Junya fields calls from Shiota regarding Abel's debt. In the midst of this, the boys face their first challenge as they run out of gasoline and they bond over stealing some gasoline to make it the rest of the way to their destination.

Arriving at a scrapyard, we soon learn that in an effort to escape Shiota, Junya has brought Abel back to his hometown. The scrapyard is owned by Junya's father, who puts the boys to work even as he lets them stay there where the boys bond over their love for cars. While Abel takes to the work like a duck to water, Junya is less than happy about it, commenting on how sad it is that their job is to destroy cars.

This leads Junya back to his car stealing shenanigans. Hooking up with a dodgy car dealer, Junya manages to seal his first deal, and is pretty happy about it despite Abel's misgivings. However, things take an unexpected turn when, in stealing his next car, Junya discovers a young lady tied up and gagged in the trunk of the stolen car. This young lady is Arisa, and even as Abel urges Junya to stay out of things, and get rid of the car (and the girl), Arisa faints on them.

Junya takes Arisa back to his home where he offers her food and shelter despite not knowing anything about her. Even though Abel is wary of the trouble that her presence might bring and continues to urge Junya to get rid of her, Junya doesn't heed Abel's warning, and even takes Arisa out for a drive to cheer her up.

It is when they are out together that they find the connection that binds them: the both of them desperately want freedom from their circumstances in life. Junya regrets that he is unable to show her the city skyline at night when it's more beautiful, and as they open up to each other, Junya finds himself falling for her.

However, trouble is brewing. The workers in the factory complain about money being stolen, implying that Abel might be responsible. Meanwhile, Junya runs into trouble with his car dealing schemes, and is scammed by the car dealer he is working with. He also suspects that Abel might be falling for Arisa.

But, above all that, Junya soon finds out that there is more to Arisa than meets the eye. When Abel leaves on a job for Junya's father, Junya had planned on using the opportunity to get closer to Arisa, only for her husband, Toshiki, to show up at the factory. Toshiki reveals that Arisa has a tendency to make up stories and tell lies, which has, in the past, caused trouble for the police, and her participation in the Acting Club when she was younger has made her an excellent actress in keeping up with her falsehoods.

Of course, Junya doesn't believe him and presses him about it, but Toshiki corners Junya with the fact that the car was stolen and insinuates that Junya might have something to do with the theft, which leads Arisa to jump in before things can get worse for Junya.

We then find out why Arisa had wanted so badly to be free. As it turns out, her husband is abusing her, and she is trapped in a marriage filled with domestic violence. Amongst other things, Toshiki chains her up in a room and forces her to delete all the contacts in her phone. We also find out that Arisa's husband is actually a respected priest in the community, which is the reason why she is trapped and unable to escape from her situation despite her various attempts in reaching out for help.

Meanwhile, Abel returns from his job, and even as Junya's father updates Abel about what happened between Junya and Arisa, they also discover that money had been stolen from the safe that Junya's father kept in his office: the money that Junya's father needs to pay his employees. On top of this, Abel also reveals to Junya that his father has been borrowing money from a loan shark to make ends meet. To help his father, Junya takes Abel along with him as they hunt down the car dealer to claim what Junya is owed.

Arisa steadily loses hope as her husband continues to abuse her, but amidst her despair, she receives a photo of the city skyline at night: the scenery that Junya had promised to show her. This gives her the strength to plot her escape as she reaches out to Junya for help. Junya immediately rushes to her aid, and manages to help her escape her husband.

Sharing a quiet moment, Arisa reveals to Junya the depth of her despair over her situation, to which Junya promises to set her free. However, they are interrupted by a phone call from Abel, who informs them that Toshiki is waiting for them at the scrapyard that Junya's father owned leaving them with no choice but to return.

Junya confronts Toshiki about divorcing Arisa to which her husband refuses, and they end up coming to blows with each other. Junya is overpowered by Toshiki, but with Arisa's help, they manage to take Toshiki down. Abel returns to the scene just in time to stop Junya from killing Toshiki. However, just when they think it's all over, Arisa shoots her husband, much to Junya's shock and dismay. While Arisa thinks that she is now free from her husband, Junya knows that the consequences of her actions will catch up to her, robbing her of that newfound freedom.

Things come to a full circle as Junya and Abel stop running and return to Shiota to pay off their debts. Junya has grown from the young man he was when he let Abel take on his debt in "Double Drive ~Ookami no Okite~", and this time, it is he who steps in to protect Abel, agreeing to take on the penalty for the overdue payment. Luckily for them, Shiota decides to overlook the matter.

Leaving Abel and Junya both free to start their lives anew.
