from khione goosens ( @freezegirl ) said to zach braun:     "If you had Medulla's brain, would you have headaches or would you be too smart for that? Figured I'd ask your opinion, seeing as Magenta and Ethan are still arguing about it."

zach can't help but blink slightly in response to khi's question. he closes his eyes briefly as he tries to process exactly what she's saying . . . because he's definitely confused if nothing else. he's never had to think about what it would be like to be too smart for his own good . . . mostly because being smart has never been his thing. zach braun is an act first think later kind of guy . . . he always has been, and he always will be. so he can't really imagine a world where he has medulla's brain. in fact, he's not even sure that he wants to imagine that world.     ❝  i don't think my head could hold medulla's brain.  ❞     zach admitted, reaching up and putting his hands on his head as if he were trying to measure it,     ❝  my head can barely hold my brain.  ❞

hello! I saw you had Sky High on the list of things you write for so I was wondering if you could do Zach with the prompts B26 & B61? And possibly a gender neutral reader? If not, female reader is fine too :) I love your writing so much.
Fandom: Sky High
Prompts: B26. “You’re special to me.” and B61. “Can I hug you?”
A/N: Aww thank you ❤️ And yayy, Sky High!! It's been so long since I've last written for it. And I hope you like it!! Legit surprised that I got someone else than Warren?? Not that I complain, it's nice to have variety, I don't like it anyway when a fandom gets only one character requested over and over again and others don't get content at all. Also a reminder that I always write gn reader if female reader is not specified in case you didn't know c:
Warnings: mentions of bullying, reader is crying
Word count: 578
Tumblr media
You had been bullied by Lash and Speed for the whole week, they had been stealing your backpack, making you run late from classes and they had also throwed your favorite cardigan to the mud pond. For some, they were harmless little pranks and people told you to ignore them, but it was getting hard to ignore when they always found the way to make your days harder to go through. Different tests were stressful enough, and then you had to endure stuff like that.
It was Zach who found you sitting from the hallway which was rarely used, crying. Zach was a little goofy and silly, but you liked having him around. You were friends, but didn’t really hang out outside school since you lived at the different sides of the city.
But today, even Zach’s company felt like he doesn’t even want to be there. That he just came because he felt like he’s obliged to. So you ignored it when he sat beside you at the hallway, and you sat in silence for few moments.
“Are you okay?” he finally asked, and you scoffed.
“What does it look like?” you snapped, but immediately regretted it. “Sorry, sorry… I just… I can’t understand why do you care. I’m a loser. I’m not even a good sidekick, my power is useless in action.”
Zach frowned, it pained him to hear you think like that of yourself. His power wasn’t good in action either, his glow didn’t make him a better fighter and he was kind of clumsy. But he still thought that someone could make up some use for his powers, maybe someone would need a flashlight in a dark tunnel?
But in this moment, he wanted to comfort you, make you feel special. “Why do I care?” he mumbled, folding his hands on top of his knee. “Well, you’re… uh, you’re special to me.” Zach mumbled and your gaze immediately shot at him. “And I think you’re nice and kind, and-”
“Can I hug you?” you interrupted his babbling, and he barely got time to nod before you had already thrown yourself into his arms. Zach didn’t expect it, and you didn’t really expect to hug him either in your state, but his words were just the thing you had needed to hear on that moment. Zach carefully hugged you back, then tightened his arms around you when you didn’t pull away, and felt you burying your face on his shoulder. He slid his hand up and down your back in an attempt to comfort you, and at the same time, he tried to calm down his wildly pounding heart. He had fantasized of hugging you like this for so long, previously your forms of affection were just pats on each other’s backs or shoulders, but a hug like this held something more to it. He gathered just enough courage to pull back slightly to place a kiss on your temple, and waited for you to push him away, but you just nuzzled into him, pressing your face into the crook of his neck, and he felt you smile.
He had been seen as loser for quite some time and actually partly believed in it himself too, trying to cover it by acting self-confident, but sitting there with you, basically cuddling, made him feel so much better of himself. His heart rate had started to calm down, and he just hoped this moment would never end.

2019 Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 36
It’s probably not the most shocking event that will happen in a Cubs game this year. The Brewers have been playing extremely well and had six straight wins coming in. The Cubs had won 10 of 11, but they didn’t exactly look like world beaters against the Marlins, even while winning three of four.
It’s really hard to be dominant day in and day out. You try to have 25 guys who have the ability to get hot and provide a lot of value so that you don’t have to rely too heavily on any one player or any one group of players. The Cubs have done a good job of that, but the Brewers pitching was fantastic on Friday.
The Cubs did manage one pretty good scoring chance in the seventh, but despite two singles and a double, managed to not score. That’s a particularly difficult feat, but a double play between the second and third hits in the inning.
Meanwhile, the Brewers offense just kept tacking on. They end up making a pitcher’s duel into a rout in the process. That also allowed them to avoid using Josh Hader on Friday. Kyle Ryan was victimized for two more runs while only recording one out. Unless the Cubs just don’t believe Xavier Cedeno has anything left to contribute, I have to imagine Ryan will find himself back in Iowa shortly. Certainly, most of us think Ryan can contribute at the major league level, but it just isn’t working right now. He’s now been charged with 11 hits, six walks and seven runs in just 13 innings of work.
Of course Allen Webster followed him in this one and did even worse. He allowed three hits, three walks and two runs in 1⅔ innings of work in what became garbage time. He’s now allowed 14 hits, five walks and seven runs in just 11 innings of work. Unlike Ryan, Webster doesn’t have options remaining, so if the Cubs choose to let him go, there is a risk of losing him.
The Cubs were certainly not very sharp, but this game was quite a bit closer than the final score would indicate. Fortunately, they all count as just one win or just one loss, regardless of how lopsided they end up being.
With that, we turn our attention to yesterday’s game as we look at what WPA had to say about Heroes and Goats. As always the Heroes and Goats are determined by WPA (Win Probability Added — here’s a good explanation of how WPA works) and are not in any way subjective. Many days WPA will not tell the story of what happened, but often it can give at least a glimpse to who rose to the occasion in a high leverage moment or who didn’t get the job done in that moment. Also note, for the purposes of Heroes and Goats, we ignore the results of pitchers while they are batting and hitters while they are pitching. With that, we get to the results.
Game 36, May 10: Cubs 0, Brewers 7 (22-14)
THREE HEROES:
Superhero: Addison Russell (.059). Addison had a double and a walk in four plate appearances. This is Russell’s first appearance in Heroes and Goats in 2019.
Hero/Sidekick: Albert Almora Jr. and David Bote (.047). Some unusual names topping the list today as the Cubs big bats were held in check. Albert had a double in four at bats. David had two singles and a walk in four plate appearances.
THREE GOATS:
Billy Goat: Jason Heyward (-.222). Heyward was hitless in four plate appearances. Included was a double play he hit into before the game as out of reach. It was only 3-0 and the Cubs had runners on first and second when he was doubled up (and it retired the two lead runners). (-.160)
Goat: Anthony Rizzo (-.117). Anthony did have one walk in four plate appearances. He grounded out with Almora on second with one out in the sixth (-.054) and flew out with two outs and a runner on first in the third (-.055).
Kid: Javier Baez (-.085). Javy had a single and two strike outs in four plate appearances. But, he did get caught stealing to snuff a potential rally in the second inning.
WPA Play of the Game: With Friday’s game largely being death by a thousand paper cuts, the biggest WPA event of the game was Jason Heyward’s double play in the bottom of the seventh. (160)
*Cubs Play of the Game: Albert Almora’s sixth inning double leading off the inning. (.110)
Cumulative Standings Top/Bottom 3:
Willson Contreras 9
Jon Lester/Jose Quintana 7
David Bote -8
Carl Edwards Jr. -9
Albert Almora Jr. -11
Up Next: The two teams will meet again on Saturday with the Cubs looking to reverse the result from Friday’s game. The Brewers will be looking for an eighth straight win and sole possession of first place. There’s a ton of baseball still be played, but sports are always just a little bit more fun when you are in first place.
The Cubs will turn to Cole Hamels to start this one. Cole is 3-0 with a 3.38 ERA in 42⅔ innings of work on the season. Cole is coming off of a no-decision against the Marlins early on this homestand. He threw six innings in that one and allowed five hits, two walks and three runs while striking out seven. Cole started the Cubs one win in Milwaukee earlier this year. In that one, Hamels threw six innings and allowed two runs on six hits. He didn’t walk anyone and struck out five. He also faced the Brewers once last year, going six innings in a no decision. He allowed five hits, one walks and two runs. He struck out five. Current Brewers have 174 plate appearances against Cole and he’s held them to a .718 OPS. Ryan Braun has the most experience against Cole (47 PA, .798 OPS). Hernan Perez has the best success against him, with a 1.248 OPS in 15 PA. One guy Cole has really stopped, though in a small sample, is Mike Moustakas (nine PA, .347)
The Brewers send their best pitcher to date to the mound in Zach Davies. Zach has gotten some great results in the early going. He is 4-0 with a 1.56 ERA in 40⅓ innings. He is coming off of a win against the Mets at home. In that one, he lasted 7⅔ innings, allowing six hits, a walk and two runs. He struck out five. He was allowed to make 118 pitches in that one, so we’ll see if there is any fall out from that. He faced the Cubs earlier this year and got a no decision in a game the Brewers eventually won. He threw 5⅔ innings and allowed only two hits, two walks while holding the Cubs to two unearned runs. In three starts in 2018, Zach was 0-1 with four runs allowed in 16⅔ innings of work. Current Cubs have 251 plate appearances against Zach with a .243/.300/.749 line. Kris Bryant has both the most plate appearances and the most success (40, 1.032 OPS). Jason Heyward has struggled against Davies (25, .334).
This looks like another well-pitched game. Hopefully, the Cubs can bounce back and get their bats going.

Fleecing the Bankers – Law & Liberty
We assume bankers obsessing over the mathematics of the economy are committed rationalists. Investors like Steve Eisman assure us they are not: he claims to observe bankers in the grip of euphoria and despair on a weekly basis (“It’s very hard to short a stock that is a cult”). Wall Street’s reaction to Patagonia might prove Eisman right.
The Wall Street Journal cheekily reports on the panic that recently swept Wall Street when learning that Patagonia will now only customize its fleece vest for “mission-driven companies that prioritize the planet.” Patagonia is an outdoorsy fashion label beloved by the adventure-sports-practicing upper middle class and is known for its environmental activism. The closely-held company donates one percent of sales to environmental causes and has taken up numerous political stances, notably castigating Donald Trump for shrinking by 85% the land mass protected by President Obama’s 2016 proclamation regarding Bears Ears National Monument, Utah.
For a number of years now, Patagonia has produced bespoke fleece vests emblazoned with the names of America’s great financial houses. But now money cannot buy the coveted fleece—morality is the only acceptable currency. Yet, why the panic? When Patagonia recently gave a private equity firm the cold-shoulder, why did “the Masters of The Universe” melt down over this? Isn’t this just the liberal fashion world taking up a conventional position against the conservative monied establishment? And surely, this comment by a Mr. Bajaj hits the mark:
Some men also scoff at the branded-vest fetish, a view amplified by online mocking. “I mean…a vest is a vest in my opinion,” said Mohit Bajaj, director of ETF trading solutions at WallachBeth Capital, who prefers North Face.
According to lore, the vests first appeared on Wall Street for the pragmatic reason that trading floors are cold, to keep the computers cool. Mr. Bajaj expresses an eminently rational view: a vest’s value is its utility.
Adam Smith would not invest with Mr. Bajaj. This man is undoubtedly very intelligent, but neither Smith, nor David Hume, would think he really grasps the ways that business works on motives much broader and deeper than those utility suggests.
Economics is foundationally about aligning objects with desires, finding symmetry between production and consumption. The second paragraph of The Theory of Moral Sentiments begins with Smith observing that “we have no immediate experience of what other men feel.” If commerce is about communication, aren’t we stumped? If each person is uniquely embodied, and thus flooded with experiences which others cannot really fathom, how can business hope to align objects with desires? The arts and imagination bridge the gap.
Persons might be mysterious, but we are also animals of mimickry. The second page of The Theory of Moral Sentiments explains what happens when we watch others:
By the imagination we place ourselves in his situation, we conceive ourselves enduring all the same torments, we enter as it were into his body, and become in some measure the same person with him, and thence form some idea of his sensations.
We literally perform this imitation, for we are natural mimics:
When we see a stroke aimed and just ready to fall upon the leg or arm of another person, we naturally shrink and draw back our own leg or our own arm; and when it does fall, we feel it in some measure, and are hurt by it as well as the sufferer.  The mob, when they are gazing at a dancer on the slack rope, naturally writhe and twist and balance their own bodies, as they see him do.
For this reason, contends Smith, the universal art is dance, accompanied by music. Which likely explains both the pervasiveness of music in shops, elevators, and our cars, and the commercial buoyancy of the music industry.
It is more natural to mimic, by gestures and motions, the adventures of common life, than to express them in Verse or Poetry… Pantomime Dancing in this manner serve to give a distinct sense and meaning to Music many ages before the invention, or at least before the common use of Poetry.
Bankers are fretting because Patagonia is putting the brake to the pantomime of all being bankers together. Pantomime satisfies the human need for belonging, but tribal solidarity is only half the story. Why do bankers so proudly twin these inexpensive fleeces with their $1500 Jonathan Lobb wingtips?
Smith: “It is because mankind are disposed to sympathize more entirely with our joy than with our sorrow, that we make parade of our riches, and conceal our poverty”. Written 260 years ago, these words remain explanatory. From The Wall Street Journal report: “‘When you walk on the street, you can definitely tell who are the people who are in banking or finance,’ said Zach Creighton, of Minneapolis, an analyst at investment bank Cascadia Capital, the name stitched on the breast of his own Patagonia vest.”
What is the ultimate driver of the economy, according to Smith?
If we examined his economy with rigour, we should find that he spends a great part of them upon conveniencies, which may be regarded as superfluities, and that, upon extraordinary occasions, he can give something even to vanity and distinction… But vanity is always founded upon the belief of our being the object of attention and approbation. The rich man glories in his riches, because he feels that they naturally draw upon him the attention of the world.
Vanity and distinction are the hinge of both economics and morality. One is moral, argues Smith, if in symmetry with the spectator.  The great analytical questions of Smith’s moral thought are: Who is the spectator, how partial or impartial, and, if more than one, can spectators find consensus? The basic rule of thumb is you have symmetry with the spectator if your posture suggests “a thousand agreeable ideas,” as he charmingly puts it. How do you and I convey agreeableness to others? Style.
Smith would not invest with Mr. Bajaj because commerce is not fundamentally about utility, but style. There is a Smithian reason Apple sits atop the business hierarchy. Steve Jobs grasped this and transformed Apple as a result:
What we’re going to do is make the products high-tech, and we’re going to package them cleanly so that you know they’re high-tech. We will fit them in a small package, and then we can make them beautiful and white, just like Braun does with its electronics.
Apple has a design logic, and so do bankers. The panic over fleeces is not irrational: vanity is as much a part of the logic of commerce as utility, and Patagonia is hitting bankers where it hurts. But do the financiers get to laugh last?
Another aspect of Smith’s thinking is uncomfortable for Patagonia. Smith argues that spectators are fickle. The speed of the news cycle or the duration of Twitter cascades makes his point. Sometimes, however, a spectator lingers and digs into the background of glamorous lives. The FBI unearthing corruption at elite universities or the Harvey Weinstein case are good examples.
Digging below the surface of Patagonia, they are not quite the moral custodians they would have you believe. Oddly, Patagonia has no factories: all manufacturing is contracted. Odd, because you would expect a company so concerned about the earth to be actually settled upon it somewhere. Its business is not in any place, its manufacturing roves.
In a frank and thoughtful ethics statement, Patagonia accepts that there are strong environmental arguments for localism and plenty of evidence exists that linking the place of design and manufacturing fosters innovation. This has been amply demonstrated by Spanish clothing giant, Zara, whose operations are all located in Galicia.
In the comments section of their ethics statement, Patagonia moderators reply to readers. One asks why Patagonia is not localist when other clothing companies are. The moderator’s answer is extremely revealing. The moderator bemoans the collapse of sewing know-how in the US and then argues that it simply is not possible for a company of Patagonia’s scale to manufacture in the US. Is it really Patagonia’s position that it is too big a company to be especially environmentally conscious? Too big to fail, anyone? Is Patagonia recycling not only clothes, but a version of the old banking argument that some financial houses are simply too important to be burdened by niceties?
Granted Patagonia is morally superior to a bank like Wells Fargo but this argument from scale—and it appears to be important in Patagonia’s eyes—trades on the idea that there is a rigorous determinism that makes it difficult for the company to be as moral as it would wish. This just is not true. The scale of the company is well within its power to change (not least because it is private). Is there a moral reason Patagonia needs to be as big as it is? Doesn’t morality demand living within one’s moral means, so to say?
