just finished dexter for the first time and that ending is actually one of the worst series finales ive ever seen.
[spoilers]
it really did such a huge disservice to all the characters, and gave nobody a proper conclusion. we watched these characters grow, struggle and fight moral dilemmas, only for none of it to matter.
dexter loses everyone.
hannah is abandoned in argentina to raise someone else's kid.
harrison's birth mom was murdered and now his dad is "dead".
deb is killed by her own brother; and then her body is disposed like other criminals.
quinn broke up with jamie to be with deb and now he has no one.
jamie doesnt have quinn anymore.
angel has lost so many people close to him — his best friend, deb, la guerta, etc.
astor and cody are now fully orphans, and their half-brother is ?? god knows where ?? as far as they know.
it also ruins dexter's character. we saw him progress over eight seasons to be a loving father, a good boyfriend, "becoming human", only for him to selfishly abandon it all to ?? become a logger ??
dont even get me started on the events that led to this ending. firstly, dexter falling in love with hannah was the stupidest, most ridiculous thing ive ever seen. i hated hannah from the get-go, and as much as the writers feed dexter lines to comment about his and hannah's "chemistry", there was absolutely nothing going on between them. they didn't have an iota of chemistry, compared to dexter and rita.
dexter abandoning everything to selfishly pursue a life with hannah, then absolutely backtrack on it at the last second was also stupid as shit. neither decision should have been as rushed as the scriptwriters made it.
oh and! him choosing not to murder vogel's son the first time was so out of character and unnecessary. it was also the exact same lesson he learnt in season 4 with miguel.
also, the whole "quinn and batista mutually agreeing to cover dexter in the murder of vogel's son" thing was way too rushed and out of character for both of them. quinn might accept it, as revenge against deb. but batista is a good, honest man. that's always been his thing. the writers could have easily sidestepped this dissonance by making it just a dexter-quinn thing. it would also have been nice for quinn and dexter to finally put all their rockiness behind them and mutually support each other in the loss of deb.
and and sorry its a minor thing, but killing off zach hamilton was a mistake. you wanted to write a spin off afterwards? zach was a perfect successor to dexter. young, eager, and sensible. he was starting to get interesting, and then was abruptly ended. this show really has issues with keeping its interesting characters.
anyway fuck the ending of dexter. fuck it all. anything after season 4 isn't canon to me. i refuse to accept the incest plotline, deb killing la guerta, dexter falling for hannah, whatever season 8 was, blah blah blah.

I’m kinda hoping before I finish this last episode it might be hinted that Dex doesn’t buy into the saving people and justice shit but instead it’s more a lie he tells Harrison specifically so a.) Harrison doesn’t leave him b.) Harrison feels justified with the actions in this pretty fucked scenario c.) Dex can almost have the Dexter/Brian moser serial killer extraordinaire relationship that he unironically has always wanted since killing Brian.
I really enjoyed how New Blood showed how genuinely fucked in the head he is and almost in a way how after killing one person in 10 years (despite the circumstances kinda “forcing” him to kill in most instances) it still almost felt like he was trying to make up for a 9 year backlog of murder. After about season 4 he couldn’t bring himself to murder his love interests (maybe a reach buuttt) but he heavily considered just stabbing Angela after she pulled the gun without having that inner monologue tell him “she doesn’t fit the Code… I’m harry morgan and shit” or even ghost Deb being like “you’re gonna orphan that girl again, insane work” and then in a subsequent scene she’s like “okay now hit the towers” he’ll even the scenes where he was opening up to Harrison were unnerving like idk if it was the fact I took a cycling class for the first time and it took me out and beat me like a dog but I felt that he would not have had the same level of patience he had for Deb when she found in him w DDK
I think his decision to really just up and leave for a big city again kinda reflects that he might insatiable at this point because he’s really fucking unstable after losing his routine, killing a good person (again lmao), and also his several murders around town, plus the fucked up sense of family he’s trying to force with Harrison rather than invest in his first idea being “holy shit Harry should’ve sent me to therapy dawg so Harrison should do that shit so we don’t get Dexter 2”
Plus plus plussss his hallucinations are of a very wishy washy Deb acting as both his Angle and his Debil. In one scene she’s like you really don’t need to do this fr and in another she’s heavily advocating for murder and in another she’s Low Tier God. She’s caressing him in one and violently forcing him to swallow the bullet that killed her in another.
Even when he had Brian as a hallucination the visions weren’t nearly as aggressive or antagonistic this man might be irreparably fucked
I just hope that they don’t try to make Harrison a Dexter 2.0 or make him a Zach Hamilton bc i will clock out the story so fast.
#dexter new blood#dexter morgan#I really liked the scene where he’s siting in the car with the mask completely off and the Latina bartender is just staring at him like wtf#before he locks in and waves despite just having a psychotic break

and dare I say trinity is overrated.. he’s a brilliant character and a beautiful study. His motivations are so interesting and he’s engaging but Dexter filmbros who put down every other villain for trinity or ITK have no real understanding of the later seasons. Finished my third rewatch of s4 and I still don’t get the full hype, I mean he’s cool but he’s not meat riding wiener whipping hog hoarding turkey thumping glaze guarding worthy. His contributions to the plot are major and his casting was wonderful but he’s just as eccentric as other big bads. In the grand scheme of villains does he rlly stand out??
Trinity is glazed. Jordan chase is not ur alpha male. Travis was a great villain. Lumen was a beautiful character. Oliver Saxon was not that cool. Zach Hamilton god bless your soul

I think it'd be really funny if Zach Hamilton was just a True Crime Fan instead of a T Killer like Dexter thinks he is

I need to make a longer post later but my GOD dexter the show is fucking obsessed with foils mirrors and parallels which is great because I am too
anyway we can broadly divide people in dexter's life who are his confidantes etc into a few categories: Family, Lovers, Apprentices, Killers, Angels, Devils, and Hunters. these overlap so so often. let me explain them. this got long so lemme add a cut.
Family are his either literal (biological or adopted) or spiritual family (Vogel). self explanatory. We can divide this into Parents, Children, and Siblings. This has Harry Morgan, Debra Morgan, Laura Moser, Joseph Driscoll, Brian Moser, Evelyn Vogel (+ Oliver Saxon by extension), as well as Astor, Cody, and Harrison. Zach Hamilton is claimed as a 'spiritual son' also
Lovers is also self explanatory. He has 4 main lovers throughout the series: Rita Bennett, Lila West, Lumen Pierce, and Hannah McKay. He also has a few ancillary love interest type people - Luci the store clerk in "Nebraska", Mindy who asked him to the dance, Cassie who he got made to go on a date with, Trisha at the high school reunion, an unnamed woman he has sex with, and LaGuerta who makes unwelcome sexual advances
Apprentices are people he either teaches or attempts to teach the Code to in some form. There are four, by my estimate: Jeremy Downs in season 1, Miguel Prado, Lumen Pierce, and Zach Hamilton. Travis Marshall seems to fit in this category also despite differences
Killers are people he broadly relates to through shared murdering. This includes basically everyone he lays eyes on, but especially the Ice Truck Killer Brian Moser, Arthur Mitchell, Jonah Mitchell, Isaak Sirko, and three who become more than killers: Hannah McKay, Jeremy Downs, and Zach Hamilton
Angels are the people who inspire him to be morally better. These include Rita Bennett and Brother Sam as well as Harry and Deb Morgan. He also acts better for his children often. Occasionally his care for his Angels inspires him to kill people for them, but that's not their fault
Devils are the opposite of Angels and inspire him to act worse. Most blatant is his Dark Passenger, to the extent that exists outside of a justification. Brian and Lila are pretty clear Devils. Harry and Deb, interestingly, are Devils as well as Angels; both directly tell him to murder people. Evelyn Vogel encourages him to lean into his serial killing as well
Hunters 'know what Dexter is' or are chasing him down for Justice reasons (rather than because they are trying to kill him/his family). Doakes is the frontrunning Hunter - Joey Quinn sort of takes his narrative place. Lundy and also the Miami Metro PD is hunting the BHB but Lundy is the real dedicated Hunter. LaGuerta becomes a Hunter in Season 7 - a rare case of a developing Hunter. Elway in Season 8 is also a Hunter.
anyway lmk what you think + if you agree or disagree and any connections or categories you'd make + if you'd be interested in me continuing this analysis
