a religion that was chosen for me (ao3)
Kevin Tran, 600 words, thoughts about bánh chưng and prophethood written for @spnpocweek day 4: roles
According to Vietnamese legend, after the sixth Hùng emperor retired, he gave up his throne to his sixteenth son, Lang Liêu, who won the position through what was essentially a cooking competition: whoever brings back the best culinary dish becomes the next king.
According to his fairly recent memory, Kevin Tran became the next prophet of God in his sixteenth year of life. He didn't win his title; he didn't even have a choice in the matter. His name, apparently, had been burned into the mind of every angel at the moment of the universe's creation. Which name—the one his teachers call him or the one his grandmother does—Kevin doesn't know, but either way, he’s been doomed by a measly three syllables.
"You should have named me Lang Liêu," he'd joked to his mom once years and years ago, as his eight-year-old fingers struggled to wrap another bánh tét in banana leaves. "Then, I could cook really really good, and I'd be king."
"But you're going to be president, aren’t you?" his mom had teased. Kevin had nodded, and she’d said, "That's close enough for me."
Maybe if Kevin had been named Lang Liêu, Heaven would know that he wasn’t the right person to be a prophet. They’d know that he didn’t have servants or advisors like the other princes did, that he couldn’t travel to faraway lands and taste strange dishes. They’d know that all he knew how to work with were rice, minced meat, mung beans, green onions, and his own two hands. If Kevin had been named Lang Liêu, some other poor fucker could have been zapped by lightning and kidnapped by Leviathans and demons, and Tran Lang Liêu could be at home with his mom instead of tied up in a warehouse, awaiting torture.
Kevin’s mom told him once that bánh tét’s cylinder shape helps them last longer and makes them easier to eat while traveling; that's why they evolved from the flat shape of bánh chưng. Decades ago, she left Vietnam for Michigan with all of her savings hidden in the bottom of her bag. Before recent events, Kevin barely ever traveled out-of-state, but he still made bánh tét with his mom each year. Maybe all those hours Kevin spent wrapping rice in banana leaves were preparation, spiritual provisions for the long road ahead. Maybe his entire life was just him biding his time until someone needed him to read a fucking tablet.
Kevin’s forgotten the details of most of the legends his mom told child-him before bedtime, but he remembers wanting to be one of the heroes in them. The gods in those legends weren’t absentee fathers; they visited heroes in dreams or in-person. When they arrived, they spoke clearly and directly, not through chicken scratch on stone. Kevin knew where he fit into his mom’s stories: as a child of dragons and fairies; someone who knew to rebel against invading forces, be clever against evil, and be a friend to his community. That made sense; his life now doesn't. Kevin may have been born as a prophet-to-be, but this angels and demons bullshit is a mythos he never wanted to be a part of.
Luckily, he thinks, reading the line in front of him again, he has an idea of how to escape the demons part of his current shitty circumstances. Thank someone for demon-killing spells. He just needs to wait.
Lang Liêu won his dad’s competition by presenting the king with two simple but delicious forms of rice cakes: bánh dày, which were round to symbolize Heaven, and bánh chưng, which were square to symbolize the earth. Nowadays, to make bánh dày and bánh chưng is to thank the heavens and the earth for what they’ve done for you. The demon tablet in Kevin’s hands is both round and square, but the parts Kevin has translated have made it clear that its contents are not about Heaven or Earth. That’s just fine by Kevin. He can understand Heaven and Earth without being a prophet—he just needs rice, minced meat, mung beans, green onions, and his own two hands.

Alyssa’s school mandated masks on Thursday, 8/26. That Thursday and Friday compliance was about 75%. After a meeting and some emails, I haven’t seen an unmasked person inside since 8/30. Progress? For reference, her school has 600 students with 6 active cases.
The twins caught Alyssa’s cold. Gen was up from 1 am to 7 am one of the nights. Brutal. Between both babes I’ve been getting about 4 hours of sleep a night and it is painful. On a positive note, Justin has helped with breakfast the past few days and has done all the cooking and cleaning. Yesterday I wanted to make bone broth for the kids so he left work early (!) picked up a chicken (!!) came home and roasted it with veggies for dinner (!!!) and today I’m making the broth.
The pros of having extra hands and a happier/more energetic husband far outweigh the con of very missed alone time.
Hef has been doing strangely well since my last post. Called vet, we decided to set him up with stronger painkillers and check back in two weeks. He’s sleeping better at night with the new meds which has been a huge relief since now the babies are keeping us up as well. He’s also up walking relatively well for the first time in a month?
I was going to write about how much creative energy I have now that Alyssa is in school and I have more uninterrupted thoughts but ha ha ha this week has zapped me on all levels. I did have so much energy at one point though that I freecycled a bunch of stuff and reorganized the babes room. So one room down, 6 rooms and 3 closets to go.
I’ve been thinking about what to do for work in MA. I miss real estate but doubt I’ll get many clients being a fresh transplant. I’d like to be a freelance writer but that’s impacted because covid. I have a nice camera but not the skill level to make money off it.
My dream in high school was to be a high school English teacher. I went to college during the recession and they were laying off teachers so I gave up that dream. I wanted to write professionally but had no desire to write fiction so I gave that up as well.
When I graduated, I did real estate for a year then left it for a job with benefits. I worked at a Jewish nonprofit full time and a synagogue teaching Sunday school. After a couple years I realized I could make more and work less being a professional nanny so did that and it was pretty much the best. I still think about those kids every day.
Anyway. I could get another job in the Jewish community. I could probably be a teacher at a Jewish preschool but is that what I want to do?
I still would love to be a high school English teacher. I could probably get over the social anxiety, I used to lead events and Jewish learning sessions with 15-60 students. But do I really want to go back to school to do it?
My favorite job besides being a nanny? In college I was a supervisor at a coffee shop. I could probably do either of those things while the kids are in school. But. I’d like to have a career. I think. Right?
I always pictured taking over my dad’s real estate company (in CA) when he retired. I don’t see us going back to CA, at least not anytime soon. So I need to come up with a plan. But don’t really know where to start..

How to Make an Impression: Improving CLV and Customer Retention with Thankster
Guest Post by Ben Mulholland, Process Street
When you have a lot of new sign-ups, you have to treat them carefully. They need attention, but the right kind of attention. They’re like small children in that regard.
And similar to small children, new sign-ups don’t just stop needing attention. Good parents will maintain good relationships with their children, well into adulthood. You don’t simply cut off a healthy relationship like that.
Escaping the analogy for a moment, maintaining a good onboarding process is much the same; it never really stops.
The benefits of onboarding are clear. It’s the best place to obliterate the seeds of churn and place the foundation for a long-lasting relationship with your customer.
As John Jantsch says, “If you hold a customer’s hand for 90 days, they’ll be loyal for life”.
Of course, your approach to onboarding will always be different on some level - that’s very much the challenge of onboarding - but a few key elements will always remain the same.
Fundamentally, good onboarding is about building and maintaining a relationship with your customer. You do this by observing them, and using every means necessary to understand their needs, and then delivering them value tailored to that insight.
Send your new clients the welcome they deserve
The onboarding process is a time-sensitive endeavor. Despite the truth of onboarding being an ongoing process, the first movements of onboarding are the most important. It’s about making a good first impression.
Statistics speak for themselves: 22% of customer turnover happens within the first 45 days of onboarding! The importance of a first impression is crystal clear.
There’s also a lot of tedious manual work that goes into an onboarding process, like sending over contracts, scheduling calls, collecting and requesting documents; it’s a very time-consuming process, and can be painful for both you and your new clients.
That’s why you should be automating as much as possible.
When time is so sensitive, every moment counts. And the more you can automate, the more time you’ll have left over to devote to what really matters: providing your new clients with value, based on their needs and desires.
Make an impression with highly personalized marketing campaigns
Your clients love to feel special. Personalized content that isn’t just simple boring template emails is a great way to make a good first impression.
By serving your clients customized handwritten cards, postcards, and all kinds of welcome notes as part of your onboarding process, you’ll be sure to surprise, delight, and impress them with your attention to detail and set your brand apart from the mess of noise that typically clutters onboarding packages.
How to use Thankster and Process Street to improve CLV
A great way to make sure you’re giving new customers the care and attention they deserve is by making sure you’ve got a solid onboarding process; and the more you can optimize and automate that process to eliminate manual tasks and tedious inconveniences for both you and your customer, the better.
Introducing Process Street; a piece of bpm software that helps you to quickly and effortlessly build and organize workflows.
Together with Thankster, Process Street can help you automate the client onboarding process with the power of integration.
Integrations are basically when two separate tools “talk to” one another and make your life easier by reducing the amount of manual work you have to do.
Quick-and-dirty introduction to Zapier (and integration)
So, what exactly is Zapier?
Basically, it’s a tool for linking software together, making it easy for them to “talk to” one another and work in order to be more useful to you.
It does this with “Zaps”, which is basically Zapier’s name for an integration.
To do this, it uses API keys: these are just bits of information associated with the software you use that allows them to securely communicate.
You don’t need to understand what they are; just where to find them. Thankfully, that’s very easy.
Components of a Zap in Zapier
Zaps are made of two parts: triggers and actions.
Triggers are basically events that cause Zapier to think “Oh! I need to do something now”, and actions are what happens as a result of those triggers.
We want to set the Zap’s trigger to go off whenever a new task is checked in Process Street. Then, the action will be that a customized card sent out to the new client as part of an onboarding welcome package.
And that’s pretty much all there is to know about integrations, and Zapier, for this example.
Now, the first step is to create a new Zap.
Head on over to Zapier and create an account if you haven’t already.
Then, click the “Make a Zap!” button on the top right corner of the screen:
Tumblr media
Setting up Process Street as a trigger in Zapier
Once we’ve started building the Zap, the first thing we want to do is to set up the trigger. Search for “Process Street” in the search box, and select “New Task Checked” as the trigger, like this:
Tumblr media
Now, select the organization you want to use inside Process Street.
For first-time users, now is the time to grab your API key, which can be found in the “Settings & API” tab of the organization you wish to add.
Click the “New API Key” button and copy the code into your clipboard.
Then jump back into Zapier and click “Connect An Account”. Pop in the API key you just created, and you’re good to go.
Tumblr media
Now you’ll need to set up a Process Street template so that we can test out this Zap is working.
You can quickly make your own by creating a new template, or you can grab a pre-made one, like this checklist for client onboarding at a marketing agency:
<iframe src="https://www.process.st/checklist/client-onboarding-for-a-marketing-agency/" width="100%" height="600" frameborder="0"></iframe>
Whether you grab that checklist for yourself from the link above or create a similar one for yourself, the next step is to input the necessary fields into the setup page and click the “Continue” button at the bottom.
Tumblr media
One final step for setting up this trigger: pulling in some samples from the Process Street checklist. Your current situation should look something like this:
Tumblr media
All you have to do is run the checklist you just associated with the Zap up to the task you specified as the trigger: basically “trigger” the Zap, to make sure it’s working so far.
So, go ahead and run the checklist in Process Street until you complete the trigger task, and you’ll be greeted with a notice like this:
Tumblr media
Click “Continue”.
We’re all wrapped up with the trigger, and now it’s time to set up the action.
Setting up Thankster as an action
Firstly, click “Add a Step” and select “Action/Search”.
Search for “Thankster” and make sure the action is set to “Send Cards”, like so:
Tumblr media
Now, connect your Thankster account.
You’ll be faced with this window:
Tumblr media
As stated above, head on over to Thankster to grab your API key, and fill in the fields.
Once your account is connected, it’s time to set up the template for specifying sending instructions.
Configure your Thankster settings and click “Continue”.
Then, you’ll need to test the integration.
Testing the integration
On the “Test this Step” tab, scroll to the bottom of the page and hit “Send Test to Thankster”.
And that’s it! You’re finished with setting up this Thankster integration.
Don’t forget to name your Zap, and turn it from “OFF” to “ON”.

Solar's historical past discovered buried in Moon's crust -- ScienceDaily
http://tinyurl.com/yxm68gg5 The Solar is why we’re right here. It is also why Martians or Venusians should not. When the Solar was only a child 4 billion years in the past, it went by way of violent outbursts of intense radiation, spewing scorching, high-energy clouds and particles throughout the photo voltaic system. These rising pains helped seed life on early Earth by igniting chemical reactions that stored Earth heat and moist. But, these photo voltaic tantrums additionally could have prevented life from rising on different worlds by stripping them of atmospheres and zapping nourishing chemical compounds. Simply how harmful these primordial outbursts have been to different worlds would have relied on how rapidly the child Solar rotated on its axis. The sooner the Solar turned, the faster it could have destroyed situations for habitability. This crucial piece of the Solar’s historical past, although, has bedeviled scientists, mentioned Prabal Saxena, an astrophysicist at NASA’s Goddard House Flight Middle in Greenbelt, Maryland. Saxena research how house climate, the variations in photo voltaic exercise and different radiation situations in house, interacts with the surfaces of planets and moons. Now, he and different scientists are realizing that the Moon, the place NASA might be sending astronauts by 2024, accommodates clues to the traditional mysteries of the Solar, that are essential to understanding the event of life. “We did not know what the Solar seemed like in its first billion years, and it is tremendous essential as a result of it possible modified how Venus’ environment developed and the way rapidly it misplaced water. It additionally in all probability modified how rapidly Mars misplaced its environment, and it modified the atmospheric chemistry of Earth,” Saxena mentioned. The Solar-Moon Connection Saxena stumbled into investigating the early Solar’s rotation thriller whereas considering a seemingly unrelated one: Why, when the Moon and Earth are product of largely the identical stuff, is there considerably much less sodium and potassium in lunar regolith, or Moon soil, than in Earth soil? This query, too, revealed by way of analyses of Apollo-era Moon samples and lunar meteorites discovered on Earth, has puzzled scientists for many years — and it has challenged the main concept of how the Moon shaped. Our pure satellite tv for pc took form, the speculation goes, when a Mars-sized object smashed into Earth about 4.5 billion years in the past. The pressure of this crash despatched supplies spewing into orbit, the place they coalesced into the Moon. “The Earth and Moon would have shaped with related supplies, so the query is, why was the Moon depleted in these components?” mentioned Rosemary Killen, an planetary scientist at NASA Goddard who researches the impact of house climate on planetary atmospheres and exospheres. The 2 scientists suspected that one huge query knowledgeable the opposite — that the historical past of the Solar is buried within the Moon’s crust. Killen’s earlier work laid the inspiration for the workforce’s investigation. In 2012, she helped simulate the impact photo voltaic exercise has on the quantity of sodium and potassium that’s both delivered to the Moon’s floor or knocked off by a stream of charged particles from the Solar, referred to as the photo voltaic wind, or by highly effective eruptions referred to as coronal mass ejections. Saxena included the mathematical relationship between a star’s rotation charge and its flare exercise. This perception was derived by scientists who studied the exercise of hundreds of stars found by NASA’s Kepler house telescope: The sooner a star spins, they discovered, the extra violent its ejections. “As you study different stars and planets, particularly stars like our Solar, you begin to get a much bigger image of how the Solar developed over time,” Saxena mentioned. Utilizing refined laptop fashions, Saxena, Killen and colleagues suppose they could have lastly solved each mysteries. Their laptop simulations, which they described on Might Three within the The Astrophysical Journal Letters, present that the early Solar rotated slower than 50% of child stars. Based on their estimates, inside its first billion years, the Solar took no less than 9 to 10 days to finish one rotation. They decided this by simulating the evolution of our photo voltaic system beneath a sluggish, medium, after which a fast-rotating star. They usually discovered that only one model — the slow-rotating star — was in a position to blast the correct amount of charged particles into the Moon’s floor to knock sufficient sodium and potassium into house over time to go away the quantities we see in Moon rocks at present. “House climate was in all probability one of many main influences for the way all of the planets of the photo voltaic system developed,” Saxena mentioned, “so any examine of habitability of planets wants to contemplate it.” Life Underneath the Early Solar The rotation charge of the early Solar is partly liable for life on Earth. However for Venus and Mars — each rocky planets much like Earth — it could have precluded it. (Mercury, the closest rocky planet to the Solar, by no means had an opportunity.) Earth’s environment was as soon as very completely different from the oxygen-dominated one we discover at present. When Earth shaped 4.6 billion years in the past, a skinny envelope of hydrogen and helium clung to our molten planet. However outbursts from the younger Solar stripped away that primordial haze inside 200 million years. As Earth’s crust solidified, volcanoes step by step coughed up a brand new environment, filling the air with carbon dioxide, water, and nitrogen. Over the following billion years, the earliest bacterial life consumed that carbon dioxide and, in trade, launched methane and oxygen into the environment. Earth additionally developed a magnetic subject, which helped shield it from the Solar, permitting our environment to remodel into the oxygen- and nitrogen-rich air we breathe at present. “We have been fortunate that Earth’s environment survived the horrible instances,” mentioned Vladimir Airapetian, a senior Goddard heliophysicist and astrobiologist who research how house climate impacts the habitability of terrestrial planets. Airapetian labored with Saxena and Killen on the early Solar examine. Had our Solar been a quick rotator, it could have erupted with tremendous flares 10 instances stronger than any in recorded historical past, no less than 10 instances a day. Even Earth’s magnetic subject would not have been sufficient to guard it. The Solar’s blasts would have decimated the environment, lowering air strain a lot that Earth would not retain liquid water. “It may have been a a lot harsher atmosphere,” Saxena famous. However the Solar rotated at a super tempo for Earth, which thrived beneath the early star. Venus and Mars weren’t so fortunate. Venus was as soon as lined in water oceans and should have been liveable. However resulting from many components, together with photo voltaic exercise and the dearth of an internally generated magnetic subject, Venus misplaced its hydrogen — a crucial part of water. Consequently, its oceans evaporated inside its first 600 million years, in response to estimates. The planet’s environment grew to become thick with carbon dioxide, a heavy molecule that is tougher to blow away. These forces led to a runaway greenhouse impact that retains Venus a scorching 864 levels Fahrenheit (462 levels Celsius), far too scorching for all times. Mars, farther from the Solar than Earth is, would appear to be safer from stellar outbursts. But, it had much less safety than did Earth. Due partly to the Pink Planet’s weak magnetic subject and low gravity, the early Solar step by step was in a position to blow away its air and water. By about 3.7 billion years in the past, the Martian environment had develop into so skinny that liquid water instantly evaporated into house. (Water nonetheless exists on the planet, frozen within the polar caps and within the soil.) After influencing the course for all times (or lack thereof) on the internal planets, the growing older Solar step by step slowed its tempo and continues to take action. Right this moment, it revolves as soon as each 27 days, 3 times slower than it did in its infancy. The slower spin renders it a lot much less lively, although the Solar nonetheless has violent outbursts often. Exploring the Moon, Witness of Photo voltaic System Evolution To be taught in regards to the early Solar, Saxena mentioned, it’s essential look no additional than the Moon, one of the well-preserved artifacts from the younger photo voltaic system. “The explanation the Moon finally ends up being a very helpful calibrator and window into the previous is that it has no annoying environment and no plate tectonics resurfacing the crust,” he mentioned. “So because of this, you may say, ‘Hey, if photo voltaic particles or the rest hit it, the Moon’s soil ought to present proof of that.'” Apollo samples and lunar meteorites are an ideal place to begin for probing the early photo voltaic system, however they’re solely small items in a big and mysterious puzzle. The samples are from a small area close to the lunar equator, and scientists cannot inform with full certainty the place on the Moon the meteorites got here from, which makes it onerous to position them into geological context. For the reason that South Pole is dwelling to the completely shadowed craters the place we look forward to finding the best-preserved materials on the Moon, together with frozen water, NASA is aiming to ship a human expedition to the area by 2024. If astronauts can get samples of lunar soil from the Moon’s southernmost area, it may provide extra bodily proof of the child Solar’s rotation charge, mentioned Airapetian, who suspects that photo voltaic particles would have been deflected by the Moon’s erstwhile magnetic subject Four billion years in the past and deposited on the poles: “So you’ll count on — although we have by no means checked out it — that the chemistry of that a part of the Moon, the one uncovered to the younger Solar, can be rather more altered than the equatorial areas. So there’s a variety of science to be performed there.” Source link

That you do not understand what you are missing in the event that you have never possessed a sour salt lamp.  It's like using a open window a gently glowing all-natural supply of clean, fresh atmosphere -- onto your own desk, on your family space, near the bed, or anywhere you decide to use it. Crystal Decor Dimmable Hand Made Natural Himalayan Salt Lamp On Wooden BaseLooking to Get a sour salt decoration?  This amazing Crystal Decor Himalayan Salt Lamp is the top choice for the very best salt lamp available on industry -- also at the bottom price.  (Though we show four amazing selections at the close of this report!))  Have it on Amazon here. Before we dip in to the wellness advantages of utilizing Himalayan salt lamps into your home, It Could Be helpful to have a short chemistry lesson: Whatever (the body, atmosphere, water, and so forth) is composed of molecules that are composed of atoms that are made of 3 kinds of particles: protons (positive charge), electrons (negative charge), and neutrons (free).  Electrons orbit their own atoms such as planets revolve round a celebrity.  Sporadically an electron flies away so if it will, it results in a positively charged ion whose single purpose in life would be to fill the emptiness left with its lost electron.  To put it differently it desires to slip an upgraded electron from another molecule.  As a result of differences in molecular structure (number of electrons in the vertical orbit, structure and strength of electron bonds( and so forth) some substances lose electrons far more readily than some others. With this simple comprehension of the behaviours of negative and positive ions fresh on mind, let us review of the very top ten great things about this Himalayan Salt Lamp. Inch.  Salt Lamps Cleanse & Deodorize that the Air Most likely the most famous benefit -- and nearly all folks utilize them arrives with their unbelievable capability to remove pollen, dust, tobacco smoke, as well as other contaminants out of the atmosphere.  "However, just how can they perform so," you ask?   "It is only a major chunk of salt having a bulb indoors, right?" Well, however.   There is more to it. Himalayan salt lamps purify atmosphere throughout the ability of hygroscopy, meaning they draw water molecules out of the nearby environment subsequently consume those molecules -- and some other foreign contaminants that they could be carrying -- in to the salt crystal.  Whilst the HPS lamp warms against heat generated by the bulb indoors, the exact same water subsequently melts into the atmosphere and also the trapped particles of pollen, dust, smoke, and etc remain secured from the salt. Reduce Allergy & Asthma Infection Because Himalayan salt lamps remove microscopic particles of dust, pet dander, mold, mould and so on from the nearby atmosphere, setting a lamp or 2 at the chambers where you invest time may badly scale down allergies.  Even individuals who have problems with asthma should see a significant impact after a couple weeks.  (In reality, sour pink salt is indeed great for the airways, so there are HPS Inhalers!)) Eases Coughing As soon as the Himalayan salt warms up and begins with its hygroscopic cycling of particles that are airborne, in addition, it affects the fee of these molecules that are discharged.  (Recall our chemistry lesson?)  Nearly all homes are filled up with positively charged ions that are not specially great for a individual's health.  The positive ions have been generated by means of a range of things, however, the key resource for the majority folks is by our electronic equipment. Among those detriments of breathing many ions from the atmosphere is the fact that the cilia (microscopic hairs) that line the trachea (aka: wind-pipe) become lethargic and do not do the job as well to keep contaminants from the lungs.  As a earthy pink salt absorbs particles and water out of the atmosphere, additionally, it takes positive ions together with them.  Afterward, once the heated saltwater releases aerated water vapor back to the atmosphere, in addition, it expels negative ions that have the contrary influence in our airways -- increasing cilial activity to help keep your lungs clean. Everything of this implies in a nutshell: Apart from removing contaminants out of the atmosphere, Himalayan pink salt lamps also allow the human own body to filter atmosphere more economically therefore any foreign contaminants that you do have been breathe wont create it in your lungs. Increase Energy   Having a drive through the countryside with all the chimney down, spending some time at the beach or camping in the hills, or only carrying a bath first thing in the morning are everything that lots of men and women find invigorating.  It isn't really a coincidence that all of these are activities that expose us to raised concentrations of ions such as the ones generated by lavender oil.  The truth isthat the positive ions sap our own bodies of energy.  Regrettably, it's too common for all of us to decide to try to diagnose the exact situation because another thing entirely. In the event that you always feel tired and do not understand why, consider maintaining a soggy salt lamp within the room or rooms where spent the maximum time.  Following a week, you should observe a variation. Neutralize Electro Magnetic Radiation Today, many folks are now surviving in a real world ocean of electromagnetic (EM) radiation that flows out of our electronic equipment (ie: tv, computer, mobile phone, tablet, appliances, and sterio, and so forth).  While they are imperceptible, the longterm aftereffects of EM vulnerability can be very severe.  Constant experience of EM radiation is also well known to enhance stress levels, induce chronic fatigue, and also decrease your body's immune response, among several other matters. While they exude negative ions in the atmosphere, Himalayan salt lamps work to repel nitric oxide.  Maintain another to the computer system, tv, and also any other electric apparatus that you use usually to lower the possible threat for you personally and your loved ones. Better Sleep Still another negative effect that leads from overexposure to positive ions from the atmosphere is that it disturbs one of excellent sleep.  That is really because those positively charged particles may in fact reduce oxygen and blood into the brain leading to irregular sleep routines.  Exotic pink salt lamps are all natural negative ion generators, so thus they are able to help undo this issue.  Maintain a couple of round your own bedroom to boost the quality of air therefore that you are able to find a far better night's sleep. Recall, even though you are like me and also you can't sleep unless the room is completely dark, you could always turn off the lamp in the evenings.  Simply leave it around for the remainder of your afternoon so that it may perform its job as you are awake.  People in humid climates needs to bear in mind that HPS lamps have a tendency to weep once the salt gets trendy.  You'll absolutely want to shield surfaces by simply setting a saucer under and make sure you stick to the directions for care and use that ought to be contained with your own lamp! Improve Mood & Concentration Himalayan pink salt lamps are a excellent way to naturally improve your mood or that will allow you to relax and unwind by the conclusion of your afternoon.  At precisely the exact same period and across the alternative side of the coin, HPS lamps are fantastic for improving immersion.  This is a result of the consequence of these harmful ions in the human entire body, improving oxygen and blood supply to the brain and other organs, in addition to providing an increase of dopamine -- that the neurotransmitter that causes us (literally) feel joyful. Heal Seasonal Affective Disorder As well as generating negative ions that improve energy and mood, the comfortable, day light supplied by a purple pink salt lamp is still close enough to the hot glow of sun they may likewise be utilized to relieve the signs and symptoms of Seasonal Affective Illness.  This season once the days get shorter, fight-back the lethargy by enclosing yourself with a couple of HPS lamps put on timers. Reduce Static Electricity from the Air Whilst maybe not really a "health benefit" at first glance, static is threatening substance.  It induces humiliation, anxiety, and frustration.  Static zaps you are least expecting it, while you are reaching for a door handle, caring your spouse or spouse before bed, or even seeking to pet your puppy or kitty.  Static may give you some bad hair, also make it not possible to wash crumbs or java grounds away from this kitchen counter tops, and even permit one to unintentionally visit make use of a sock adhered into the trunk of one's top... (Ok, so that one might have been only a modest overthetop.)  The truth is static electricity might be a massive annoyance and Himalayan pink salt lamps are an effective method to neutralize the air borne ionized particles that cause it. Environmentally-Friendly Light-source Last, but not least: blue-green salt lamps are green.  While just a quote, the reservations by which HPS is currently mined step approximately 80 and 600 million tons and can be estimated to continue for a 350 years at the existing extraction speed.  The bottom of the HPS lamp is usually carved out of a sustainable timber like neem.  Some lamps make use of a low-wattage bulb that absorbs almost no energy while some others have been powered with way of a candle that is lit. Choosing & Placing Your Himalayan Pink Salt Lamp Once it involves buying black pink salt lamps, the coverage is dependent on the magnitude of this crystal.  Smaller lamps (similar to this 8 pounds lamp) are advantageous to the normal bedroom, whereas larger lamps (similar to this 1-5 pound) are ideal for spaces just like the livingroom or room.  Normally, calculate that a 1 pound of HPS crystal will wash the atmosphere in approximately a 4' x 4' area. In the event you can't ever locate a sizable enough lamp to get just about any specific space, then bear in mind you could use numerous lamps distribute across the room for exactly the exact same effect. Top 5 Best Himalayan Salt Lamps In 2017, tens of thousands of Lumière Himalayan Salt Lamps offered in Michaels shops and during Amazon involving July and November 20-16 were willingly remembered.  A mistake supposed that when the lamp has been plugged it might sew and possibly catch fire which makes them a shock and fire danger. Market reflection
Overall as the design team, our contribution to the market I think went quite well. The zappar portion was just as successful as I hoped, used by many with no problems. I was worried about the internet but it seemed nobody had any trouble loading the content. It was great to see everyone’s reactions and it was good to give them something to do while they waited to get into the market. It definitely added a lot to the feel of the market and hyped everyone up right from the beginning. I was pleased by how many people actually downloaded the app - We tried our best to advertise for everyone to download before-hand and it seemed to work well. Across all the codes I created for the market I got over 600 zaps!
Zappar & System of exchange -
One major problem that I think arose during the market and will likely show in the reviews is the ambiguity of the system of exchange. I have heard some talk already and it seems many thought that zappar was our system of exchange, which meant they were very confused as to why it didn't feature of most of the stalls. I heard some participants talking about how they didnt use zappar at all after the beginning of the market, but that was really the whole point. We were using it just as a way to hype up the market and advertise it.  I think a big reason for the confusion was because the previous market used snapchat as their system of exchange, so it is natural to think that we did the same with zappar. Also because we were specific about downloading zappar before the market, people probably thought that it was a requirement to attend. This was not the intention at all, we simply didn't want everyone downloading the app on the day or just ignoring the hard work put into the interactive zappar element. Personally, I think this wouldn't have been as much of a problem if not for the previous market.
Some things that could have been changed/improved -
- We should have just handed out all the cards right at the beginning of the market rather than sharing them amongst the wayfinders. I was at the very start of the market and many were confused as to why only some people were getting a card.
-  The event could have been released much earlier and shared more effectively, not a whole lot of people actually saw that.
- For the cards that we printed out large and put on our shirts, I would have liked to have made something different to display so there was more reason to scan it. As it was we just recycled the “I hate you” card. Also it would have been quite cool to have it actually printed on the shirts.

Tomioka + # 6 “...please tell me you’re playing dumb…please tell me their flirting did not go right over your head!” + Atlantis by Seafret + angst –> fluff
Character: Tokioka Giyuu
Warnings: Sanemi being Sanemi LOL, slight angst because giyuu is dense and reader overthinks Event Rules/information
“Come back again soon!” Tomioka nodded his head curtly at the young female, going about his way to continue his midday patrols. For the past couple months Tomioka had been visiting a local restaurant for lunch. It had a calm, quiet atmosphere, It was simply and traditionally decorated, and the service and food were always top notch. Everytime he went the same waitress always took his order and served his food. She was very kind, and always took time out of her work to make conversation with him- and as someone who didn’t get to talk with a lot of other people he grew to treasure their moments together. Who knows? Maybe she’d be a nice friend.
A friend was not what she was trying to be.
The girl sighed as she watched the quiet hashira walk away from the establishment. For 2 months now she had been giving him little hints she was interested, small signs that she would like to be more than friends. And so far? Every single one had gone right over his head.
She returned to her space behind the counter and started folding napkins, trying and failing to get the hashira off her mind. He was quiet, yes, but his actions spoke volumes. He was always respectful and friendly- even if he came off as cold at first. She had fallen fast and she had fallen hard, how could she not when he was so…perfectly him.
Shaking her head she smiled up at the couple that had walked in the door, letting them know she’d be with them in a moment.
*meanwhile at the hashira base…*
The hashira listened intently to Master Ubayashiki as he briefed them on their missions for the next few days. “Lastly, this mission is for Tomioka and Shinazugawa,”
The two hashiras turned to look at the other- though one of them was visibly less thrilled than the other, “In the next village over, there’s been a surge of demon attacks, please spend a few days investigating. Tomioka, you visit that area quite often anyways, yes?”
The other hashiras watched with surprise as the young hashira’s face flushed and he curtly nodded. Narrowing his eyes, Sanemi scoffed and waited for the meeting to end.
Was he thrilled to hear he’d be spending the next few days with Tomioka? No. Was he mildly intrigued as to what had made his stoic- and seemingly emotionless, fellow hashira blush? Absolutely.
The next day came and so far the mission was going smoothly enough, smoothly as in Sanemi had not yet tried to strangle Tomioka. Then it came time for lunch, and Tomioka perked up, saying, “I know a place”, before starting on his way there. The two walked into a nice family restaurant, and it didn’t take but 5 minutes for Sanemi to understand just what made Tomioka frequent this establishment.
‘Ah…so that’s why he blushed.’
Initially Sanemi had assumed his co-worker just had a crush on the girl, and as the lunch went on he was 75% sure that was the case.
But he was 100% sure that Tomioka himself had next to no clue he had a crush on her.
And what was Sanemi gonna do about it? Not a thing, that was not his business- not his problem. That being said, that doesn’t mean he can’t meddle a little bit.
When the waitress had walked away to get their check, Sanemi scoffed, grabbing his companions attention. Sanemi paused, thinking of a way to phrase his comment so it doesn’t look like he cares too much, but also obvious enough that his copart will recognize what he’s implying.
“So that’s why you like this place so much.” Tomioka tilted his head, a curt “What do you mean?” leaving his lips as genuine confusement showed on his face.
Sanemi took another pause, registering that, yes, Tomioka really didn’t realize the affection he held for the girl- before continuing.
“..the waitress..you keep comin’ back here for her, right? She’s pretty, you must like her a lot if she makes you be social.” Out of his peripheral vision he could see the waitress coming close to their table, ‘good, maybe he’ll find the guts to ask her out, it’s stupidly obvious he likes her.’
Tomioka looked off to the side, then down to the table, then back to Sanemi. “...no..the food is just good. I don’t care for Y/n like that.” Sanemi’s eyes widened ever so slightly, mostly because she was standing just close enough that she most definitely heard what he had just said.
Her breath hitched, and for a split second Sanemi thought she might break down right then and there, but by some miracle she held it together, thanked the two for their patience and took their payment.
As she walked away she took in a deep breath to keep her calm demeanor visible to the other customers. But inside she felt like she was being ripped apart. Even if the two had never vocalized interest for the other, she was sure there had been something between them, something special. At one time she had even wondered if he had kept coming back to see her, but that was foolish- of course he just came back for the food, how could she let herself get so hopeful..
Meanwhile the two hashira were on their way to the inn they were staying at. The whole walk back was silent, which with these two wasn’t unusual since Tomioka didn’t speak much and Sanemi didn’t want to speak to him.
But something about this silence was downright unsettling for the blond, and after 15 minutes of this heavy, ugly silence he snapped.
“Okay that’s it- the heck is wrong with you?!” His proclamation startled the water hashira out of his deep thinking, “I…I’m not sure…” Sanemi scoffed, “Can’t blame you- if I blatantly broke a poor girl's heart I’d feel pretty bad too.” Tomioka whipped his head to face his partner, blue eyes narrowed in confusion.
“Broke her heart- whose heart?” Sanemi stopped walking and blinked a few times, staring in absolute disbelief that the ever so diligent water hashira truly hadn’t realized the girl had been giving him hints. He really had missed the coy smiles, the light hearted quips and kind remarks had gone misinterpreted as purely friendly gestures, and the use of his first name really hadn’t set off any signals at all.
Tomioka stopped walking and turned to face his companion, narrowing his eyes when he noticed the dumbfounded look on Sanemi’s face.
“...please tell me you’re playing dumb…please tell me their flirting did not go right over your head!” At the wind hashira’s words Tomioka faltered, opening and closing his mouth for a solid 15 seconds before a pained whisper of “...she was flirting with me..?” left the frustrated hashira’s mouth.
Sanemi laughed, not a humorous laugh, as at this point this situation was starting to physically pain him. “YES! She likes you, it was so stupidly obvious!” Tomioka huffed, running a hand through his hair before he took a short glance towards the restaurant and briefly returned his gaze to his partners. “...I’ll be back.”
Before Sanemi could ask, Tomioka took off in a sprint back towards the restaurant, hoping his first and what felt like his only chance at love was still willing to give him a shot.
Sighing, the girl took a look outside of the open doors. She had managed to fend off tears after the duo had left, deciding it was best to wait until later when she could finally process her heartbreak.
Her thoughts were interrupted when a slight commotion came from the front. Exiting the quiet break area, she felt her heart drop as she saw a slightly out of breath Tomioka standing at the entrance. The hostess, who knew of the Y/n’s crush on the hashira, beckoned the girl to meet him outside, which she would have refused had the hostess not snitched that she was on her way.
Standing across from the man that she both yearned for and dreaded to see, she stood with her hands tightly grasped in front of her, eyes off to the side to avoid his gaze.
As his eyes met hers, he felt like he had been punched in the stomach. How come it had taken him this long to realize that what he’s been feeling for the past few months was love? On his way over to the restaurant, his mind had played out every interaction, every smile, every joke- his heart swelled with joy at what he was feeling. Then proceeded to drop with regret as he remembered his unintentionally cruel words just 20 minutes prior.
“Tomioka? Can I help y-” “I’m sorry.” Her eyes widened, before she sighed. “Look, you don’t need to feel bad because you don’t feel the same, that wouldn’t be fair.” She watched as he shook his head, letting out a breath before taking a step closer. “I’m sorry I didn’t realize how I felt about you sooner, if I had…I never would have said what I did earlier.”
She frowned as she remembered what had been said, but mentally backtracked as the first part of his sentence registered in her brain. ‘Wait- how he feels about me?’ “Giyuu, what are you saying..?” He gently grasped her hand, eyes staring into hers as he spoke, “I’m saying if I had known I was in love with you sooner, I never would have accidentally harmed your feelings.”
His gaze dropped to the ground, shame and regret clouding his dark eyes. As he wallowed in his despair he missed the light flash in her eyes, he didn’t see them widen with surprise and her mouth twitched into a shocked smile. “You..love me?” Returning his gaze to hers, he nodded.
“I understand if I’m too late…what happened was unacceptable-” Intent on putting a stop to his apparent self-loathing she gently pulled him closer to place a soft kiss on his cheek. Gently laughing, she shook her head.
“You’re not too late…it’s only been 20 minutes!” He smiled- it was small, barely noticeable at that, but she saw it. Just like she saw a not so conspicuous Sanemi softly smiling from a distance for his teammate.

Similar to all the Neff sigle stove series, this design showcases CircoTherm ® innovation, which drafts sky coming from the within the stove, which is after that heated and also forced back in to the oven through air ducts at the back of the stove. To make your infrared preparing food stove last a lot longer, tidy your oven frequently as well as switch out the element that wear out.

Weekly Market Recap Aug 27, 2017
It was a quiet week aside from Tuesday which saw a nearly 1% jump in the S&P 500 – but not necessarily a win for the bulls (yet).   Much like on an upward move you want to see periods of consolidation to rest and consolidate; we are in a near term downward move and one could say this rally was a bit of a rest and consolidation.  Bulls still have work to do.  Monday and Friday showed mild gains, while Wednesday and Thursday showed mild losses; almost all of the week’s movement was based on Tuesday.   Tuesday’s rally seemed to be linked to a Politico report that President Donald Trump’s top aides and congressional leaders are making progress on shaping a tax-reform plan.   The central bank speeches late in the week were non events.  The S&P 500 added 0.7% and the NASDAQ 0.8%.
Sam Stovall is leaning bearish:
“Even though the S&P 500 is currently only 2.2% below its Aug. 7 all-time high, the market’s current technical action points to the possibility of a decline of deeper proportions,” said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA.  Stovall said the erosion in price momentum of the cyclical sectors, such as technology and financials that had been leading the recent rally, have been adding to the downbeat sentiment.
The market doesn’t “care” about this sort of thing until a selloff happens but just as an FYI to our readership:
Forward multiple or price-to-earnings ratio, a measure of equity values, of the S&P 500 are at 17.4 times, representing the highest level in more than a decade, according to FactSet.
Among reasons for caution aside from some weakness in the index charts is the transports below their 200 day moving average for the first time since last summer.
Interesting positive action in copper and emerging markets however!
Economic news was sparse (durable goods) and not of interest to markets.
Here is the 5 day weekly “intraday” chart of the S&P 500 .. via Jill Mislinski.
Here are the 25 websites with the most financially well off people reading!  We were (of course) #1 overall but this survey only looked at the top 500 sites by traffic and we are (of course) #501.  So close!  I do love that #23 is on the list.
The week ahead…
First week of the month is always the interesting one – we get the second read of 2nd quarter GDP (2.7% expected up from 2.6% on the first revision) and August employment data (+183,000 expected. 4.3% unemployment rate).   The Institute of Supply Management’s manufacturing report Friday is expected to have edged up to 56.5 per cent in August, from 56.3 per cent the previous month. A reading above 50 percent indicates that the manufacturing economy is generally expanding.
President Trump will be doing a speech about tax reform this week.
The debt ceiling will start to cause some fuss but D.C. ALWAYS raises the debt ceiling – despite a lot of rhetoric.  But the rhetoric can spook some people in the near term.
Index charts:
Short term: Near term downtrends in both major indexes and both a tad below their 50 day moving averages. Is this consolidation before a new leg down or is the market ready to zap the bears for the upteempth time since November???
The Russell 2000 remains below the 200 day moving average – a much more serious blow than being below the 50 day moving average.
The NYSE McClellan Oscillator went back positive Friday but 1 day is not enough for us to change our stance.  If we get 4-5 days of positive readings we’ll shift.
Long term: We are skipping the 5 year charts here for a bit as we have some interesting charts on about a 2.5 year chart – you can see the major breakout since election night.  Both indexes are chopping around on uptrend lines and even a bit below them.  So let’s keep this view for a few weeks and see how it plays out.
Charts of interest / Big Movers:
Herbalife (HLF) gained nearly 10% Monday after announcing a self-tender offer and confirming it recently held talks on a going-private transaction. The health products distributor said it has commenced a modified Dutch auction self-tender offer to buy for cash up to $600 million of its own shares.
Also Monday, Tenet Healthcare (THC) closed up nearly 15% after two board members from it’s largest shareholder resigned on Friday.  An interesting battle going on within this company.
A rally in a brick & mortar retailer!!  Tuesday DSW (DSW) jumped nearly 18% for their best single-session climb since going public in 2005, on solid quarterly earnings.
And another Thursday?  Dollar Tree (DLTR) rallied 5.6% after the discount retailer reported better-than-expected earnings for the quarter.
This week’s winner in the biotech lottery was Adamas Pharma (ADMS) which surged 40% Friday after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration late Thursday approved the company’s Gocovri treatment of dyskinesia, or abnormal or involuntary movements associated with Parkinson’s disease.
Have a great week and we’ll see you back here Sunday!

20 secrets for maximizing your Inman Connect San Francisco experience
http://ift.tt/2vao6Aj
Inman Connect in San Francisco is one of my favorite weeks of the summer. Let me share a few conference road warrior tips that I’ve learned from the best over the years.
They just might make your trip more pleasant, and help you get a bit more out of the conference:
1. Register right now
Register for #ICSF 2017 (use promo code “Sam” for $200 off)
2. Digitally prepare
Download the app.
Win and close more buyers with an exclusive mortgage product
Partner with a brokerage that packages buyer rebates with discounted loans READ MORE
3. Start networking
Join the Inman Coast to Coast Facebook Group to start networking.
4. Book airfare
OAK and SFO airports are about equidistant from the hotel.
5. Make hotel reservations
The conference is at the San Francisco Hilton Union Square where you can book your room.
6. Pack
ICSF is a full week. Pack your neck pillow for travel. I recommend the really dorky one with the clip in front. It looks like an involuntary restraint device, but it’s worth its weight in gold.
The city can be chilly at night, even in summer. The conference rooms can be cold. Pack layers. Pack something fancy for the Innovator Bash.
Pack gym clothes — really. A brisk walk or run in the San Francisco air will do wonders for your mental and physical stamina over the long week. As a side benefit, you won’t feel bad about eating all of the crab cakes at ListHub’s shindig.
Pack business cards. People still use them. They’re also a physical band-aid for the places where conference brain cells sometimes disappear.
San Francisco is not cheap. If you are (hand raised!), pack a one-quart Ziploc bag with an assortment of three-ounce libations in your carry-on. It may come in handy.
7. Schedule your events
All kinds of companies sponsor events and parties, some of which are “come one, come all,” while others are very small. Ask your vendors for tickets beforehand if they’ll be hosting. Check in with the main sponsors of the conference.
Try to make as many events as possible, as the networking opportunities are outstanding. You can sleep when you get home.
8. Karaoke
Put it on your to-do list. It’s a rite of passage. I’ll back you up.
9. Set meetings beforehand
Don’t follow your nose around for the week. Meetings are half the value. Who do you want to meet: vendors, executives, brokers, agents, consultants? You might miss them passing in the halls during the week. Get them on the calendar for 15 minutes, and make sure you connect.
Accept invites from folks you don’t know well. You can have lunch and dinner with your friends from home when you’re at home.
10. Fly like a pro
Did you get assigned a bad seat? At the gate counter, nicely, with a smile, say the name of the person you’re speaking to, and ask if any seats have opened up. You’re in sales, you know how this works. Seats magically appear.
Get some noise canceling headphones. Or, for the more economically minded (this is becoming a theme), download a white noise/static app, and blast it through your ear buds. Snap on your neck pillow, and close your eyes.
Sometimes you get stuck next to a particularly invasive seatmate. Getting upset helps no one. Apply one of those three-ounce sleep aid elixirs to your situation. Breathe deeply. It’s only a few hours. You can do it if I can.
(That’s not your tray, friend)
The lines for airline restrooms often get long. Here’s a little known fact: Those restrooms up in first class aren’t only for first class passengers. They’re also for coach passengers who are faster than flight attendants.
11. Speed your arrival in San Francisco
You’re going to want to get through the airport quickly because there’s still a significant car or train ride ahead. Don’t go to the first restroom you see. That line’s always longest when you’re deplaning. Head to the restrooms near the middle of the terminal.
Before you exit through security, grab some water and a snack from the shortest shop line.
12. Get from the airport to the hotel
Catch a BART train or Uber/Lyft into the city. For added excitement (or because we already established that you’re cheap), you can Uber pool and share a car with a stranger.
If you’re in a car, plan on traffic being horrendous. If it’s not, count yourself as lucky.
On the ride, join your hotel’s rewards program. Check in early on the hotel’s app. You’ll probably have access to a much shorter line when you arrive and upgrades are more likely.
13. Prepare for the city
San Francisco is a big city. There are some great tourist activities and beautiful locations. There are also some seedy areas, and your conference name badge around your neck screams “My wallet pocket wants your hand in it.”
Be aware, and don’t head out at night on your own without knowing where you’re going.
14. Efficiently attend sessions
Make sure you’re there for the opening sessions. The energy in the room is amazing, and the speakers are always outstanding. Don’t be surprised when the talks aren’t all about real estate. Some of the best are completely out of left field.
Great afternoon tracks often overlap. Team up with someone; divide and conquer the dueling sessions. Compare notes later.
Make time to visit Startup Alley, and see which products might help your business. There are a lot of booths to visit. Go easy on these folks. They’re often techies who are new to sales, they’re pitching all day long, and some of them just might make your job easier.
15. Lobbycon (it can be a verb or a noun)
Every time you need a break from sessions, take it in the lobby. Lobbycon is like the Bilderberg of real estate, except that we peons are allowed to mingle with the industry icons.
Overwhelmed by the crowd? Find an Inman Ambassador, and ask for an introduction to whomever you’d like to speak with.
Don’t shy away from the vendors — they’re not always selling. Some of the most interesting industry things I’ve learned at Inman have been through Lobbyconning with vendors.
16. Follow the Inman golden rule: ‘Don’t go big on the first night’
It’s exciting to be traveling in a world-class city, but the week is a marathon. The evening revelries will increase in number and scale by the day.
Have fun, but keep some powder dry for Thursday night. You’ve still got to do some business to write this trip off on your taxes.
17.  Take a zap nap
This is another secret I learned from the conference Jedi masters who came before me. If you get up in the morning for the Connect wakeup, go to nine sessions, three meetings, a dinner and two vendor parties, you’re going to be wiped out at least one day.
When you get tired at midday, try the zap nap: Set an alarm for 20-30 minutes, chug a cup of coffee and immediately take a nap before it kicks in. You’ll wake up charged and alert, and you’ll thank me for it later.
18. Experience closing day
Be ready for Friday. The content has gotten meatier every year. New Kids on the Block, a crowd favorite, showcases the brightest new startups.
The CEOs of some of real estate’s biggest brokerage companies, including Coldwell Banker’s Charlie Young and BHGRE’s Sherry Chris will be on stage.
Our Inman hackers will be debuting an app they’re building during Connect week.
19. Reconnect after Connect
When you get home, sleep in, then regroup. You will have collected lots of business cards during the week. Connect with these folks on social media. Send a thank you email to those you had a good conversation with.
Immediately start implementing one business improvement process that you took away from Connect. Make the value of your Connect week last.
20. Book ICNY for 2018
It usually starts at $500 or $600 the day ICSF ends. It’s the best deal you’ll get all year.
See you in San Francisco.
Sam DeBord is managing broker of Seattle Homes Group, VP of Strategic Growth for Coldwell Banker Danforth, and President of Seattle King County Realtors. You can find his team at SeattleHomes.com and BellevueHomes.com.

Hyperallergic: Pippa Garner’s Crossover Art of Gizmos, Gadgets, and Gender
Installation view of “Pippa Garner: Tinker Tantrum” (2017), Redling Fine Art, Los Angeles (all images courtesy Redling Fine Art, Los Angeles)
Pippa Garner is a crossover artist with a penchant for satirical inventions and ideas. Tinker Tantrum at Redling Fine Art includes pencil drawings and texts, mixed media assemblages, and video performances from the 1970s to the present that showcase Garner’s ingenuity as an absurdist and bricoleur, exploring a vein of popular science mined by R. Crumb and Al Jaffee to lampoon American consumerism and culture.
Garner has been an absurdist for four decades, satirizing consumerism, marketing, and waste in performance art, videos, sculpture, installations, drawings and magazine editorials and art pages. She came to fame in the early 1980s, in her former identity as Philip Garner, after the publication of her books of madcap inventions, Philip Garner’s Better Living Catalog (1982) and Utopia – or Bust (1984). Her self-effacing humor and quirky utility apparel, including men’s midriff half-suits and umbrellas made from palm fronds, gained a wide audience through appearances on such talk shows as The Tonight Show, Today, and The Merv Griffin Show.
Pippa Garner, “Shirtstorm” (2017), 25 handmade t-shirts, 106 inches diameter
Studying automotive design at Pasadena’s Art Center College in the 1960s, at a moment when car culture was captivating the American imagination, Garner began exploring cars as vehicles for cultural introspection in the 1970s. She modified a Chevrolet for Esquire magazine in 1975 that captured the attention of the San Francisco art collective, Ant Farm, leading to collaborations with Chip Lord in counter-cultural performances and media events.
Garner explores the ambiguous role of the automobile in American culture with a thoughtful combination of satire and bricolage, which enabled her to cross over from the avant-garde to mass media. For 25 years, Garner had a monthly editorial page in Car and Driver, and her satirical art also appeared in Los Angeles magazine, Rolling Stone, Arts and Architecture and Vogue. Although she has exhibited sporadically in art galleries, she prefers the “broader appeal of magazines,” which reached a wider audience.
Pippa Garner, “Utopia or Bust” (2013), film still, 7 min 33 sec, edition of 5
In the late 1980s, Garner began another crossover, by transitioning to a different gender. The hyper-masculine, body-building, Vietnam veteran known for leading man good looks and charm made a gender transition decades before Caitlyn Jenner advocated for gender transition. Garner insists, “I was not born in the wrong body like people who are truly androgynous,” adding, “I was just tired of being an over-sexed male in his forties.” Before her transition, she took estrogen injections and people commented that she was “nicer and not as angst [ridden].” After five years of therapy and research while taking estrogen, she underwent sexual reassignment surgery (SRS) in Brussels.
Recalling Oscar Wilde’s famous comment, “One should either be a work of art or wear a work of art,” Garner emphasizes that the gender transition “is part of my work. I look at my body as being an appliance not unrelated to things in my works. This is something I have to work with. I had a playful attitude, which was the same as my books.” Moreover, “mixing characteristics of two genders short-circuits the system. A man can feminize, but can’t cross, because we can’t simulate the experience a woman has from a built-in reproductive system.”
Pippa Garner, “Tinker Tantrum” (2013), film still, 3 min 29 sec, edition of 5
The exhibition takes its title from a series of Tinker Tantrum videos (2013). In one video An In ‘Faux’ Mercial, Garner appears as both Gadget Girl and Gadget Guy, wearing headphones meant to make a personal statement, such as Barbie headphones for convicted pedophiles, bread loaf headphones for the gluten-friendly and “hear no evil” devotional hands.
In another video, Garner demonstrates pedal cars for sporty men and fashion-conscious women and showcases personal utility gadgets, and “more friendly iterations of up-cycled technologies” like the Personal Utility Drone (or PUD) engineered as a “handy household helper” for shopping errands. Her gender performance also extends to playing a leather-clad dominatrix, “Reprimand-a.”
For the video series Onboard Trophy Wife (2013), Garner appears as both a bride and groom in a marriage ceremony, which ends with a wedding pedal car and a protest sign to “legalize self-marriage.”
Pippa Garner, “Onboard Trophy Wife” (2013), film still, 4 min 6 sec, edition of 5
In Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity (1990) philosopher Judith Butler analyzes gender as “improvised performance,” proposing drag to destabilize and poke fun at the notion of a universal or original gender. While artists have performed gender by playing with drag at least since Duchamp, few have been as subversive as Garner in both re-engineering their sexed body and legally changing the sex on their birth certificate post-op, two decades before transgender politics blurred gender binaries.
Garner creates a dialogue on the inefficiency of greed and waste in consumer culture with “The World’s Most Efficient Car” (2007) and “Crowd Shroud” (2017). The former is an old Honda 600 converted into a human-powered, vinyl-floored, decal-tagged “misc.pippa.” The latter, a wheelchair with a two-way mirror and bicycle lights, overturns the logic of privilege behind Victorian carriages that used underpaid human labor to carry aristocrats through crowded streets; Garner re-engineers this signifier of class into a vehicle of independence for a disabled passenger.
Pippa Garner, “Crowd Shroud” (2017), wheelchair, wood, paint, vinyl, two-way mirror, bicycle lights, 54 x 42 x 19.50 inches
The suite of pencil drawings from the 1970s to 2000 with illustrations of various inventions demonstrates the broad range of Garner’s skills as a draftsperson, inventor, and perceptive cultural commentator. These drawings show the influence of Zap Comix, Mad magazine, automotive design training, and a childhood in Illinois when boys learned to become jack-of-all-trades from their fathers by tinkering with do-it-yourself projects.
Pippa Garner, “Lookin’ Good” (1996), pencil on paper, 11.25 x 15 inches
Garner’s inventions capture the American ethos of ingenuity — although their future may or may not arrive. Although she skewers conventional logic, her madcap inventions lack the accusatory tone that characterizes some political art. Rather, her goofy, light-hearted touch allows her subversive satire to cross over to a broader audience.
Tinker Tantrum continues at Redling Fine Art (6757 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles) through June 3.
Garner will be in conversation with Zachary Drucker today and with Laura Fried on June 3, followed by a performance.

WESTFIELD, Mass. (The Westfield News) – How can you sum up a year when so much has happened?
Westfield has been such a hub for news and events over the past year that it would be difficult to try and summarize it in a sentence or thought. There has been good news, like the Babe Ruth World Series and the planning board’s relentless desire to protect their residents; and there has been bad news, like a water ban due to contamination and tragedy that has struck residents throughout the year.
However, in order to provide you, the reader, with a news capsule to help understand the goings on going forward in the city for 2017, we have decided to provide you with a brief recap on some of the stories that graced our pages this year.
Of course, this will be just some of the larger stories that occurred, so make sure to grab a copy of The Westfield News every day to find out even more of what happens in your backyard.
Water woes in Westfield cause worry
In Westfield this year, the top headline would have to be water. There was no shortage of stories on H20—even though there was a shortage of water in 2016.
Westfield saw a number of water issues last year, from contamination to shortage to distribution concerns. These events dominated headlines from summer onward, as new developments were occurring regularly. At one point, they literally had to call the US National Guard to help figure out just what happened.
Still, through it all city officials have repeatedly said that there is nothing to worry about. That hasn’t helped residents though, as they showed up to meetings about water and voiced concerns about the supply and about what chemicals are actually in the water.
The concerns began when it was found that Westfield water had high levels of polyfluorinated carbons (PVCs), which many came to know as PFOA and PFOS compounds. These compounds, which were found in firefighting foams that have been used on U.S. military bases across the country, were at unacceptable levels following a report from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that suggested that the level of these compounds should be drastically lower in public drinking water.
This drew the Guard to come in and order testing of the groundwater around Barnes Regional Airport, where they stored and used the firefighting foam for many years prior to finding that it could be harmful to water supplies. Additionally, the city saw two of its eight wells get taken offline due to the EPA recommendation, and a $5 million bond is currently up for vote by city council to help build filtration systems for the compounds.
If this wasn’t bad enough though, the lack of these wells, as well as the lack of precipitation through the spring and summer months, helped to put Massachusetts and Westfield into drought conditions. The city tried to combat the issue, putting in a water ban to prevent outdoor water use under most circumstances. Still, through the summer and fall months the conditions worsened, until eventually the Granville reservoir was taken offline due to low water levels, in addition to the two wells that were already offline.
Planning board flexes its muscle, giving voice to residents
In a time when some residents felt that city boards and commissions may not do enough to help them, the Westfield planning board showed that big changes can happen through those very positions.
The planning board did not just stop one business that residents felt was infringing upon their homes and privacies, but two. The planning board first voted against the outdoor lighting and field use at Roots Athletic Complex at 181 Root Road, then said no to the Dollar General Company who was trying to build a retail store at 600 Southampton Road.
The Roots Athletic Complex is still being discussed by the board since it had a previously OKed special permit, but it was a significant move because residents near the building were growing concerned and annoyed with the project. The discussion went on for several months, after complaints from residents started coming in over the summer to the board. After several public hearings and meetings, it seemed like there would be no end to the cycle.
However, on Dec. 6, the board voted to deny the special permit for Roots Athletic Complex.
“I am happy that the residents got up there and made their requests because they know what kind of issues this is creating for them,” Ward 1 councilor Mary Ann Babinski, said on Dec. 7. “And I’m happy that the planning board listened and made a vote on it last night instead of continuing this again.”
Another contentious permit, the Dollar General proposed location on Southampton Road, also drew complaints and residents to the planning board meetings. Residents were filling city council chambers when the item was on the agenda and the planning board listened to the complaints and worries.
And even after the Dollar General engineers acquiesced to the planning board’s requests, changed plans and style of the building, the planning board denied their special permit as well, on Dec. 20.
Health becomes focal point of city councilors
Though the ordinances are still to be enacted, Westfield officials have been working to make the city essentially smoke- and plastic bag-free.
The two may not seem to go together, but both have been proven to have impacts on public health and the environment. So, ward 1 city councilor Mary Ann Babinski and Westfield State University intern Sean Bacon drew up a plastic bag ban ordinance, while the city council unanimously voted to ban smoking on all city-owned, operated and leased properties. Also, the Westfield Housing Authority (WHA) also announced that they would be implementing a smoking ban inside all WHA properties beginning April 1, 2017.
All of these decisions came in an attempt to help provide a healthier environment for the many people in the city and beyond.
“We’re not trying to be lords over everybody, not trying to say no you can’t do this,” Bacon said about the plastic bag ordinance in December. “We’re doing this for a reason–we’re trying to keep people healthier and keep the earth healthy.”
Regarding the smoking ban, the road to passage was not always a smooth one. When the vote first came up in city council, The Westfield News’ Amy Porter wrote in a Dec. 2 article, “At-large Councilor Daniel Knapik called it a ‘slippery slope,’ warning that the next ban will be on chocolate chip cookies, ho-hos and twinkies. ‘Where does it stop?’ Knapik asked.”
Still, after discussions, debates and an addition of a smoking cessation program for those seeking to quit, Knapik joined the majority, along with the three other dissenters, and agreed to ban smoking from city-owned, operated and leased properties.
City positions saw much movement in 2016
In Westfield, there were several positions that were filled, changed or left in 2016.
The city found itself having a new superintendent of schools, trying to find a replacement for the airport manager position at Barnes Regional Airport, successfully finding a new city building inspector and losing its long-serving city auditor.
The new superintendent of schools, Stefan Czaporowski, or “Mr. Zap” as students call him, became Westfield’s school superintendent July 1, following Dr. Suzanne Scallion’s retirement from the post. He was chosen among several qualified applicants but his resume as Westfield Technical Academy (WTA) principal surely made him standout. He previously had success in the city’s education system, creating the aviation technology program at WTA, overseeing increased test scores in the school and drastically improved dropout rates, as well.
For the airport manager position at Barnes, then-manager Brian Barnes stepped down from the position in order to take one as executive director of Amelia Park in August. The Amelia Park board of Directors were looking for someone who could help create increased finances for the park, and they felt that Barnes was the one to help with that.
“We’ve gone through many directors since Amelia has started and we wanted to find the right person who knows about finance, who knows about fundraising, and it has been a tough time to find someone to fit into that role,” president of the board of directors James Adams said Aug. 11.
The city is still in negotiations with the potential replacement for Barnes, though an announcement may be coming this week.
Regarding the superintendent of buildings position, the city had been looking for someone to fill the role since August 2015, when Jonathan Flagg resigned. Then, on April 28 they found one.
Carissa Lissee was appointed to the position for a three-year term after the city council unanimously approved. She had previously served as the building commissioner and zoning officer for the town of Granby.
As for the city auditor position, Debbie Strycharz retired after 22 years in the position on Nov. 26. Her departure is reportedly giving way to changes in how the city operates its budget management going forward, and the position is yet to be filled.
“We are actually looking at a potential restructuring of the finance department’s auditor, collector, treasurer and assessors,” Mayor Brian Sullivan said regarding the possible change. He suggested a chief financial officer for the city but no official announcement has been made.
These are just some of the many news stories that graced our pages this year. For more news, check out thewestfieldnews.com and we will continue to bring you the best local coverage every day.

Zap's 600 event: OPEN
Tumblr media
Message From the Author:
Hello hello, and thank you for dropping into this event. To start I would like to say thank you to all of you for putting up with me for this long LOL, it's been over a year since I last tried to do an event, but for 600?! I'd really love to do one. This January will mark my second year on tumblr and that's a pretty crazy thing. A special thank you to my wonderful mutuals (even tho some of you are bullies *cough* Qui and Zoe) who have been with me through thick and thin and are just the sweetest people😭 So allow me to say thank you by doing the thing I do best, writing.
- zap
EVENT RULES:
- SFW only - General request rules apply - I would prefer no more than 1 prompt per ask, but if 2 really speak to you? Go for it, i'll do my best to deliver - Only for followers- that being said, if you find this in the tags and wanna follow then send a request? Go ahead! you'll find no judgement from me, welcome :)
I like to think I'm a pretty laid back person, and I'm not very strict on this blog at all so please respect my rules, they are in place for a reason!
How this works...
- Choose a character from this lovely list - Choose 1-2 prompts from below! As you can see, I am a huge enemies to lovers fan so that had a lot of influence on these prompts. - Is there a song you're very fond of? Tell me! I love music and including it in my writing. Who knows? It might just inspire the oneshot I write for you... - Lastly, let me know if you'd like fluff, angst, both and/or an AU. I am down for any AU, I've only written a few but they're fun. ex. "Washio + #6 + Glimpse of Us by Joji + fluff + flower shop au"
Prompts:
“Provoke you? That doesn’t sound like me.”
“You love me? Here I thought you were just dumb- but if you love me that makes you an idiot.”
“Nope- don’t say it. I already wanted to punch you, don't make me want to kill you.”
“And I thought you were too stuck up to pick a petty fight with a ‘nobody’  like me, but here we are.”
“I didn’t leave because I hated you– I left because I thought you hated me!” “Well that was really stupid because I’ve been in love with you for 5 years!”
“...please tell me you’re playing dumb…please tell me their flirting did not go right over your head!”
“Why did you think I flirted with you so much?!” “Wha- I thought you did that with everybody!”
“This…we- we can’t do this…y/n..” “Do what-” “Us Y/n! We can’t do us!
“I wouldn’t say that they hate me-” “I would. I would say that I hate you.”
“Ah..so you two used to know each other?” “Uhm…yeah something like that.” “‘Something like that?’ Really? Cause I would say I know a lot about you.”
“Oh butt out- no one asked for your opinion.” “And no one asked you to do something so reckless, yet you so graciously did it anyway.”
“Kiss me.” “What- no. Absolutely not. Not after that-” “I saw you glance at my lips 4 different times- just kiss me already.”
“We can’t go out there now! What are they going to think when they see- this?!” “Does it matter? Either way we have to leave eventually, and the longer we stay holed up in here, the worse it looks.”
“You- that was my first kiss…you stole my first kiss!” ‘What do you want me to do? Give it back?!” “I- yeah, I think I do..” “My pleasure.”
