The Codex

The road to the forest has taken them an hour and a half, and as the night was surprisingly uneventful, despite Vindicar insisting that they take turns being on watch for potential trouble. In the morning, the group left the forest, heading straight to the keep.

“Look, the land here is clearly tended to… so things are not that bad!” birdpony chimed. pointing at the fields below. There were quite enough signs of civilization, though any griffons they saw seemed wary and preferred to avoid the trio. “And look there, ahead and to the right…”

Indeed, the city that had become clearly visible more than deserved its name - five great towers and twice as many small ones surrounding a complex geometric pattern of roads and districts, one that was clearly planned rather than evolved naturally as many cities do. However, as the group approached closer, it became apparent that the city was eerily quiet. While there was activity around it, it was nowhere as much as there should have been for the city of this size.

“Sweet stars, how long has it been since I saw this place…” Vindicar whispered. His mind returning to the task on hand, he added, “Those towers are designed to keep entire area around and inside the city under crossfire. If they really have been attacked, I suggest we approach by the road, rather than fly over the wall.”

"Hey, Rainy! It's been a while, huh? I've been a bit busy, going back and forth between the Opinician Republic and Equestria. I've got my own team in the Weather Patrol now, isn't that cool? Sometime, I've got to pay you a visit and give you a great big hug. Tell Gren and your parents hi for me, and I hope I can find time to see you, soon!" - Zephyr the Opinicus

A letter from Zephyr! Alright, I gotta right a good reply...

"Zephyr! Congratulations on your own team! I'm sure the skies of the Opinicus Republic are in good paws! I'll be sure to tell the fam, they'll love to hear it!

Quartz has joined me on my response team full-time, so I've been able to hang out with her more than ever, and I never know what adventures come next. I'd love if you could come along sometimes!

Yea, that’s why Tempest Shadow is so awesome! She figured out how to do powerful lightning magic with most of her horn gone!

"Aside from easing access to magic, what other benefits does using a wand confer?"

Well Griffon’s do not have a natural magical focus like unicorns or changelings.  This puts them at a significant disadvantage up until the point where a natural caster reaches the limits of their magical focus, loses the ability to use their focus(broken or overstrained horn) or requires a transformative or purely external focus(like where a natural focus would get damaged with use(spells that discharge energy faster than their limit)), or multiple foci.  At that point the reliance on a natural focus can work to their detriment, or serve as a hard limitation. 

Heck, most unicorns if their horn is shunted or broken have never had to come up with a virtual focus to cast magics at all like a griffon would have to without a wand, and are powerless regardless of how many thaums they have access to.

{🔥}—; The little dragon took the time to get a closer look, his eyes looked at the catbird with curiosity because he’d seen a lot of things but never something that looked like some kind of catbird hybrid. “You’re in Evening Lake, one of the worlds of the Forgotten Realms.

Spyro looked at his paw, it was definitely bigger than him but size didn’t matter to him so far he seemed to be a friendly kind of guy, so he reached his smaller paw forward and shook his hand. “Good to know ya Zephyr, but never seen anyone like ya before if that’s what you are.”

Bad news

It was early in the morning when "Blue Streak” approached the air port of Nidum Lapicida. The port was buzzing with activity, deals being made and product of local stone quarries being sent off on hulking barges. After leaving the ship, the group caught only few surprised glances, most griffons having something better to do that stare at them.

“We should find local tavern, ‘Swift Journey’. Uncle Goratio said he’d either meet us there, or at least leave us a message,” Vindicar said, after the group found a relatively calm place to talk.

Meanwhile, in Medic Feather's 'verse... "Rainy!" Zephyr calls. "It's so good to see you! It's been a while, how have things been going for you and Quartz?" Astro is with him, too.

"Zephyr! I haven't seen you and Astro in awhile! You gotta visit Equestria more.

"Quartz has gotta less and less satisfied with researching magic and has been wanting to go on missions more and more. Even though she doesn't have wings I think she might like traveling more than I do..."

A portal opens out of nowhere, in Evening Lake, and spits out a strange, black furred creature, who lands with a yelp and a tumble. It's like a big cat, but with wings... and a beak?

{🔥}—; Spyro was only visiting Evening Lake, the Sorceress had been defeated a while back but he still liked to come visit the Forgotten Realms to come see some of the friends he’d met here in these lands. Although during this visit he was definitely not expecting to see someone he’d never met before be thrown from a portal that appeared seemingly out of nowhere.

The little dragon curiously approached the strange looking creature, he looked like some kind of strange mix of a big cat and a bird with those wings and a beak. “Sooo, what are ya supposed to be can’t see I’ve ever seen somethin’ like you before.”

Birdpony checks his shedule to make sure he will have enough time for that. After several minutes of grunting and cursing quietly, armored birdpony flies heavily towards the designated place.

Above, a weather services drone circles- controlled from a rooftop by a familiar grey and black opinicus. The drone, innocuous enough, serves to provide an early warning system of approaching fliers and potential hostiles- whether corporate security or local law enforcement... Another opinicus, blue, black, and silver- is watching network activity intently for potential activity spikes or countermeasure activation... Rainy and her allies are well covered.

"Something I've always wondered... why is laughing last so special? Isn't it like being the last one to get a joke?" Someone asked. But as Spyro looked around... all he saw was that strange, blue floating light that followed Zephyr around, on occasion.
