つい昨年2019年のこと。それぞれのシステムを見直してみて私は自分の研究人生での最も大きな驚愕を覚えました。あと数十年すると北極海の氷は、夏には全部溶けます。シベリアでは永久凍土が劇的な規模で解凍し続けています。

グリーンランドでは何兆トンもの氷河が失われていっており、ティッピングポイントへと近付いているようです。北の大森林の火災からは、ヨーロッパほどの大きさの煙が生じています。

大西���の海流の循環が弱まっています。アマゾンの熱帯雨林は死にかけており、15年以内に炭素を排出し始めるかもしれません。グレート・バリアリーフのサンゴ礁の半分は死滅してしまいました。

南極大陸西部は、既に転換点を越えてしまった可能性があります。そして最も堅牢な氷河である南極大陸東部の一部は不安定になっています。気候を調整する生態系や気候システムの15のうち9つが変調をきたし、懸念すべき衰退の兆候を示し、おそらく転換点へ近付いています。

転換点は、３つの脅威をもたらします。まず、海面上昇です。今世紀中に海面が、１ｍまで上昇することは確実です。これは２億人の住居を危険に晒します。さらに南極とグリーンランドから解け出す氷河をこれに合算すると海面上昇は２mにもなると考えられます。ですがそれで終わりではなく状況は悪化の一途を辿ります。

次に、もし炭素の貯蔵庫である永久凍土や森林が、炭素を吐き出しはじめてしまったら地球の温度を安定させることは、とても難しくなります。

最後に、こうした自然システムはすべて繋がっています。１つの転換点を越えたらドミノのように次の転換点も巻き込みかねません。

さて、現在の状況を振り返ってみましょう。私達の文明の基盤は安定した気候と豊かな生物多様性で成り立っています。まさに全てがこれに基づいています。これまで文明は程よい条件のもとで繁栄してきました。暑すぎず、寒すぎない気温の中です。

人間は最後の氷河期以降１万年、この中で暮らしてきました。もう少し長い時間の中で見てみましょう。300万年の間、気温は、上昇してもプラス２度は超えませんでした。地球の温度の変化は、限られた範囲にとどまり温暖な間氷期にはプラス２度まで氷河期でもマイナス４度まででした。

しかし、いま３世代のうちに、３～４度上昇するという世界に変化しています。

私達の気候は100万年や200万年ではなく、500万～1000万年もの時間を逆行しているようなものです。地球は温室になる方向です。１度気温が上昇する毎に10億人が今日「居住不可能」と考えられる環境へと追いやられてゆきます。

これは気候の危機ではなく惑星の危機です（過去には、ゲルマン人の大移動で一神教のキリスト教が東西に分割されてます）

私が恐れていることは、地球が2030年の1月1日に崖から落ちたりするということではなく、私達がもう元に戻れなくなる地球システムのメカニズムボタンを押してしまうことです。

これから10年で起こることは、私達が将来世代へと手渡す地球の状態を決定することでしょう。子どもたちはあらゆる理由で危機感を抱かざるを得ません。私達は地球環境を安定させる事に真剣に取り掛からなくてはなりません。

２つの分野がこの変革を導きます。

まず、科学。持続維持可能な地球の新しい方程式はこうです。

地球の限界に共有地（コモンズ）としての世界を加えると地球への奉仕が導かれます。私達人類は安全に皆が地球全体への奉仕者となれる方法が必要です。地球を救うためでなくより良い未来を皆のために作るために。

２つめは社会にあります。低収入者へのウェルビーイングを基盤とした新しい経済理論が必要です。

私達は共有地としての世界や企業や都市に対して、科学に基づいた目標を提示することができます。まず私達は2030年までに世界中での炭素排出量を半減し、2050年以前までにネット・ゼロを実現しなければなりません。

その為には社会の基盤システムをゆるやかに脱炭素化する必要があります。エネルギー、産業、交通、建築、化石燃料が主要になるような時代は終わりなのです。

私たちは、農業を炭素排出源ではなく、逆に、吸収貯蔵するよう転換する必要があります。また、海洋と土地を守ることは必須です。

自然のエコシステムは、排出された炭素の半分を吸収します。幸いにも私達はこれを達成できます。私達には知識があり、技術があります。

そして、これは社会的にも経済的にも良い選択だと分かっています。成功したあかつきには、皆が新鮮な空気を胸いっぱいに吸い健康的なライフスタイルに移行していくでしょう。居住可能な環境の都市に復元力のあるマクロ経済システムが根付くでしょう。

私達は皆、太陽の周りを廻る旅を共にしています。地球は、私達の唯一の家です。私達のミッションは、子どもたちの未来を守ることです。
