end of year fic recs! 

i didn’t read too much hp fic this year, but i did come across a few pieces that i really liked, and since i already put together a longer fic rec the other day, i thought i’d share some (mostly snape-centric) things from the list:

Wholly to Be a Fool by bluestocking79

Characters: Eileen & Severus, hinted Severus/Draco, Eileen/Tobias. Summary: At the age of 65, Eileen Prince Snape is as surprised as anyone to find that she’s finally developed an interest in being anybody’s wife or mother. Excerpt: The letter is written in a neat, rounded hand and the aggressively earnest style of a swotty schoolgirl. Yet it is not the presentation of the letter that makes Eileen clutch the back of the nearest chair until her knuckles go white, it is the content. She reads the words over and over again, her mind attempting to rearrange them into an order that makes some sort of sense. She can understand the news that Severus is seriously ill, and the announcement that he is in a coma. She can even absorb the story involving an enormous and venomous snake, preposterous as it sounds. She knows nothing of the life Severus has lived, after all. What Eileen can't understand is why this girl—this Hermione Granger—seems to believe that Eileen's presence can be in any way beneficial.

Can't Run But (A Winding River Remix) by Penknife

Characters: Severus, Regulus, Draco, Narcissa, Lucius, Sirius. Summary: Draco does look like his father, but Severus knows that's not the only family resemblance. Excerpt: Severus knows that he will do better when it's his turn. He may not have pure blood, but at least he's not a coward. The first time he kills a Muggle it's easy; he speaks the words and there is a flash of green light and the man dies. He can't believe he has so much power. That night he dreams that he has broken something fragile, and as hard as he tries, he cannot put it back together. He will be punished for sure, he thinks in the dream; he can hear his father's footsteps now.

Closer Quarters by ZeroSystem

Characters: Bellatrix/Severus; hints of Severus/Lucius Summary: PWP/One-shot, Severus and Bellatrix, established "relationship" before the end of the first war. Excerpt: Bellatrix is cruel and unstable and they walk along a knife's edge between loving and hating each other, but she's fascinated him since he was a child. She is so brilliant, and so dangerous – a true Amazon warrior, named aptly. For a few dizzying heartbeats that he can hear in his head, they are graceless, clumsy, useless next to each other. Maybe normal people feel like this.

Writing on the Wall by calrissian18

Characters: Severus/Draco, Malfoy family & Sev Summary: There was a moment, before his sanity had packed its bags—bed still warm and cigarette still burning in the cheap ashtray on the nightstand—that he thought this might be too much. Excerpt: Lucius’ eyes hardened and he said deliberately, “That—that empty shell up there who has taken it upon himself to be a tireless scribe to his delusions—is not my boy.” // Narcissa’s eyes were wet as she said pitifully, “But he is, Lucius.”

Unbreakable by femme.

Characters: Severus/Draco, Eileen, Scorpius Summary: One last time, Severus tells himself. One last time with Draco, then never, ever again. Life, however, doesn't always go as one plans. Excerpt: "I'm sorry," Draco says after a moment, and Severus knows he's sincere. He'd grown close to Eileen in the year he and Severus had spent together. Severus often suspected that his mother was fonder of Draco than of her own son. And he knows Eileen's weaknesses as well as Severus does, not that Severus can blame his mother for drinking: Tobias Snape--alive and in death--had driven them both to the bottle. "You have her on potions, certainly--"

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a real thing and affects up to 20 percent of the population in the United States each year, says Monte Drenner, LPC, therapist and life coach in Orlando. While it stinks that you get it, the upside is that because it is predictable, you can prepare for it. Put a plan in place by buying a light box, trying out supplements, and talking to your doctor about medication. Make sure to make note of any early changes in mood and sleep patterns so these symptoms can be addressed quickly rather than letting them progress throughout the fall and winter months, he adds.
