The Day of Becoming You. 7
Story: 7
Acting: 10
Chemistry: 8
Comparable to: Secret Garden (kdrama) ; Mr. Queen (kdrama) ; The Emperor Love Swap (cdrama)
Yes this has your typical cliché switch body storyline structure that follows many dramas. It’s sort of reminiscent in my opinion to the kdrama Secret Garden, except of coarse this is more modern. It’s full of fluffy goodness and it very hilarious all around. The first half especially is funny as heck, middle half gets a tiny bit repetitive and slow, and with the last episode which sort of ruins the whole series in a way, it makes it a bumpy ride. Is it still a good watch, most definitely. I throughly enjoyed it despite its setbacks for me.

Hi, do you read danmei? Favourites?
Hi! I’ve read quite a bit of danmei over the years and my absolute faves are two pretty 古早 (1990s/2000s era) novellas:
北京故事 Beijing Story(read it in Chinese here)— It was adapted into an explicitly queer movie called 蓝于 Lan Yu in 2001. It’s a poignant and tragic story about a decades-long relationship between a young entrepreneur and a college student set against the backdrop of the Tiananmen Square massacre and the economic miracle of the 1980s and 90s. (Yes, you read that right. And yes, it got made into a movie, with minimal censorship. The early 2000s were fun times in China.)
十年 Ten Years (read it in Chinese here) — It’s about a complicated and bittersweet decade-long relationship between two men who befriend each other in high school and come of age in early 2000s China (the early 2000s vibes are so on point in this novel ❤️). They end up together. But I’m not sure I’d call it a happy ending.
Nowadays my Chinese fandom reading consists of fic for fandom pairings like
瓶邪 pingxie ( Zhang Qiling x Wu Xie from 盗墓笔记 The Grave Robbers’ Chronicles) — the Chinese multi-chapter longfics in this fandom are breathtakingly good. If you can read Chinese, I can recommend a few.
玄亮 xuanliang (Liu Bei x Zhu Geliang historical RPF set in the three kingdoms era)
元白 yuanbai (Yuan Zhen x Bai Juyi historical RPF set in the late Tang dynasty)
And of course 笛花 dihua fic from 莲花楼 Mysterious Lotus Casebook. The novel is actually mainstream wuxia and not danmei.
I’ve read or tried to read most of the popular danmei novels on 晋江 Jinjiang in the mid and late 2010s, and here are a few I’d recommend (that don’t already have officially released tv dramas)
二哈和他的白猫师尊 Erha and his white cat shizun
将进酒 Jiang Jing Jiu
杀破狼 Sha Po Lang: If you can read Chinese, you should definitely check out this author (Priest). She really knows her way around a sentence and has a solid grasp of literary Chinese
(二哈 Erha and 杀破狼 Sha Po Lang were adapted to TV and then cancelled)
And here is one that has a TV drama adaptation but the book is still worth checking out if you can read Chinese:
鬓边不是海棠红 Winter Begonia: the atmosphere of the novel is very different from the tv drama (which I also adore). It’s a lot more 妖娆妩媚 coy and seductive. It’s really good.

the sword of yajiu
by Bai Juyi (mid-to-late Tang Dynasty poet, 8th and 9th Century)
歐冶子死千年后 A thousand years since Ou-ye Zi had died,
精靈暗授張鴉九 His soul, in gloom, for Zhang Yajiu did guide.
鴉九鑄劍吳山中 And Yajiu forged a Sword among Wu hills,
天與日時神借功 From Heaven borrowed time, from gods their skills.
金鐵騰精火翻焰 Flames fluttered, ores’ and irons’ spirits soared
踴躍求為鏌琊劍 A Moye Sword they leapt up and restored.
劍成未試十餘年 The Sword spent ten years idle, and then some,
有客持金買一觀 Before a Guest paid sums to have a look.
誰知閉匣長思用 The case, alas, stayed closed in want of use;
三尺青蛇不肯蟠 The three-feet green snake dared not leave its nook.
客有心 劍無口 The Guest had a spark, the Sword bore no mark,
客代劍言告鴉九 The Guest spoke Sword’s words, plead that Yajiu hark:
君勿矜我玉可切 “Boast not, sir, stones of jade that I can slice;
君勿誇我鐘可刜 Gloat not, sir, heavy bells that I can maul;
不如持我決浮雲 Do better, hold me, cleave the clouds adrift,
無令漫漫蔽白日 Their boundless blinds from bright of sun dispel.
為君使 無私之光及萬物 Your selfless glow shall I expand to all
蟄蟲昭蘇萌草出 Those hibernating wake, and sprouts propel.”
Ou-ye Zi was a swordsmith in the state of Yue in the Spring and Autumn period. The Yue-jue Shu (available only in Chinese, sorry) said that when Ou-ye Zi worked, the Mount Chijin pried itself apart, and tin arose within, and the brook of Ruoye stopped in its flow, and copper arose within; and Master of Rain poured water to clean any dirt, and the Lord of Thunder blew the winds and raised the fires; and aquatic dragons held up the furnace, and the Lord of the Heaven filled it with burning coal; the Laws of Tai-yi descended unto earth, and all essence of the world were bestowed unto the sword.
Moye, his daughter, was also a swordsmith, and she and her husband Ganjiang made swords on the orders of He Lü, the king of Wu, and the swords bore the names of this couple. All three swordsmiths names later became references to great swords that required great wielders. Several stories existed to explain what happened to this couple and their child later on. These were retold in the 20th century story "Forging the Swords" by Lu Xun, the English translation of which can be read in pages 43 through 53 here.
If Zhang Yajiu actually existed, he might have been a contemporary of Bai Juyi’s. Not much about this swordsmith is known.
Green snakes were often a metaphor for swords. The Emperor Gao of Han was said to have slayed a white serpent as he rebelled against the Qin dynasty, and Bai Juyi described the action as “beheading the white snake using the green.”
Among the Miscellaneous Chapters of the Book of Zhuangzi, the sword befitting a Son of Heaven was said to be able to cleave the floating clouds above and penetrate every division of the earth below, and
Let this sword be once used, and the princes are all reformed, and the whole kingdom submits.
Bai Juyi, along with his friend and fellow poet, Yuan Zhen, wrote a series of poems in the more ancient Yuefu style, whose explicit goals were to provide, in cryptic words, social commentary and sympathy for people from all walks of life. Bai wrote 50 poems to this purpose; The Sword of Yajiu was the penultimate. In the preface to all 50 poems, Bai stated the thoughts that drove each piece, and the one for the The Sword of Yajiu was "to think of breaking through blockage and gloom".

How important was Mount Dingjun from a strategic perspective? It seems like Shu's victory at Mount Dingjun, one of the few (or only) battles they won during their Hanzhong campaign, was a big enough strategic win to force Cao to retreat and win the entire campaign for Shu--but Mount Dingjun didn't seem to matter at all during Cao Zhen's, Cao Shuang's, or Zhong Hui's invasions of Hanzhong. Why did Dingjun matter so much at first but not at all later?
Tumblr media
I think this map helps a lot. (To Establish Peace)
At the start of the campaign in 217, Liu Bei's only route to advance was through Yangping. There, the road split into two branches: the Lianyun Road through San Pass to Chencang and the Baoye Road through Yegu to Mei. Nanzheng controlled the merger of the Mian and Han rivers, and passage down the latter.
In 217, Liu Bei advanced to Yangping. Xiahou Yuan and Zhang He encamped at Guangshi to prevent his advance, and he was unable to break their defensive line throughout 218. Zhang Fei was sent to secure the Liangyun Road but was defeated by Cao Hong, entirely ending the western operations.
If you look closely, you can see that Mount Dingjun is south of the Mian River (interchangeable with the Han at that point), while Xiahou Yuan's defenses were to the north. Liu Bei relocated from Yangping to Mount Dingjun in hopes of outflanking Xiahou Yuan and Zhang He, since he couldn't gain the road. Xiahou Yuan challenged the position but was killed.
Zhang He and Guo Huai regrouped the survivors and maintained the defensive line along the Han/Mian River. They stretched in a belt from Guanshi to Baozhong to Nanzheng. Encamped at Mount Dingjun, Liu Bei decided not to challenge them.
Cao Cao had been waiting at Chang'an. His forces had been victorious throughout 218 so there had been no need for him to get involved personally. Once Xiahou Yuan died, he advanced to reinforce the defenses. The two armies faced each other for several months but no decisive battle took place and Cao Cao withdrew north to the Wei.
So, Mount Dingjun was important because Liu Bei was maneuvering around Xiahou Yuan's specific position. Subsequent campaigns in the area didn't operate along exactly the same lines, so this specific position wasn't really relevant again. Shu's main defense in the region was concentrated on the fortified Yangping Pass, since that was the route any invading army needed to take.

Completed 'Surname' Polls
This is where I take several characters from different Chinese media (mostly cnovels and cdrama) and run a poll on which one is the 'best'. What does best mean? It's up to you! Whether you love them, are intrigued by their characters, love to hate them, or they're your '2 second blorbos whose personality you made up wholesale', these are all reasons for you to vote for your favs!
NB: the surnames are not exactly the same in all the cases, as often they will be a different character. I am, however, grouping them all together otherwise things got more complicated.
This post is for the polls which have finished running and can no longer be voted in (since I have realised that I'm quickly approaching the limit for hyperlinks in the original masterlist).
If you want to see the currently live polls, they can be found here

Qing dynasty painting of Epang Palace by Yuan Jiang 1722-1735
"The First Emperor felt that, in view of the large population of Xianyang, the palace of the former kings of Qin was too small. “I have heard,” he said, “that King Wen of the Zhou had his capital at Feng, and King Wu had his at Hao. The area between Feng and Hao is fit for the capital of an emperor or a king.” He accordingly began construction of a state palace in the Shanglin Park south of the Wei River. First he built a front hall at Epang which measured 500 bu from east to west and fifty zhang from north to south. The upper part could seat 10,000 persons, and in the lower part flag poles five zhang high could be erected. It was surrounded by covered walks which then led from the hall directly south to the Southern Mountains. The summit of the Southern Mountains was designated to be the gate of the palace. An elevated walk extended from Epang north across the Wei River to connect the palace with Xianyang,
The palace at Epang had not been completed at this time. The emperor intended to select some appropriate name for it when it was completed, but meanwhile, since it was being built at a place called Epang, everyone referred to it as the Epang Palace. Over 700,000 persons condemned to castration and convict labourers were called up, part of them being put to work building the Epang Palace and part assigned to Mt. Li.90 Stone was quarried from the northern hills and timber transported from the regions of Shu and Jing, all being brought to the site. In the area within the passes there were a total of 300 palaces, while beyond the passes there were more than 400. The emperor had a stone set up at Qujie on the eastern sea, declaring that it was the eastern gate of Qin. He had 30,000 households transported to the town at Mt. Li, and 50,000 households to Yunyang, exempting them all from taxes and corvée labour for a period of ten years.
Master Lu said to the First Emperor, “I and the others have searched for zhi fungus, rare herbs, and the immortals, but we can never seem to encounter them. There would appear to be some entity that is blocking us. The magic arts teach that the ruler of men should at times move about in secret so as to avoid evil spirits. If evil spirits are avoided, one can reach the status of True Man. If the whereabouts of the ruler of men are known to his ministers, this hinders his spiritual power. A True Man can enter water without getting wet, enter fire without getting burned, soar over the clouds and air, and endure as long as heaven and earth. But now Your Majesty, though ruling the whole world, has not yet been able to attain calm and quietude. When you are in the palace, do not let others know where you are. Once that is done, I believe that the herbs of immortality can be obtained.”
The emperor said, “I long to become a True Man. From now on I will refer to myself as True Man and will not call myself zhen.” He then had elevated walks and walled roads built to connect all the 270 palaces and scenic towers situated within the 200 li environs of Xianyang. He filled the palaces with curtains and hangings, bells and drums, and beautiful women, each assigned to a particular post and forbidden to move about. Anyone revealing where the emperor was visiting at any particular moment was put to death."

Coming to the sudden realization that Jet Li's acting was truly over shadowed by his face and his martial arts . Compiled are my favorite movies before he went to Hollywood.
care free young boy? see jue yuan and san long your typical 90s protagonist in the USAwho's good at kungfu? see ah kit 一代宗师? Take a a peak at Wong Fei Hung and Zhang San Feng (Huo Yuanjia unshown) Tragic Qing Dynasty kungfu master? Catch Fong Saiyuk or Hong Xiguan. Feel like you wanna fight? My Father is a hero or Bodyguard from Beijing? Suddenly feeling very pro nationalist? Chen Zhen and Allan are there for you. Wanna watch a very suave Ling Huchong? Watch Swordsman II. Wanna see him be a dad? Watch The New Legend of Shaolin or My Father is a Hero. Need a good adventure that also has eye candy Takeshi Kaneshiro? Watch The Scripture with no words.
The man is way too versatile and this is not even mentioning his films after the 2000s which I have enjoyed, namely: Romeo must Die, Kiss of the Dragon, Hero, Cradle to the Grave, Unleashed, Fearless,THE WARLORDS, Ocean Heaven. Badges of Fury (he is SO FUNNY).
ANYWAYS.
RE: Jet Li is seriously an underrated actor. He has 1000% more 灵气 than say , Jackie Chan. Above are specific shots that have stood out in my brain since 1998.

I have intentionally stuck to the Hanshu where it differs from the Historical Atlas.

People do understand that Sima Yi can want Zhang He dead to secure his power over the western military, and not as a long con to take over Wei... This thing is VERY COMMON!!!!! People really need to broaden their view of history to more than just what they learn from video games. smh
There are a few other lines I have seen online. I still don't see reasons to think that was the case. What would had been the point? Apparently it was not that important to him as Sima Yi had worked well with Cao Zhen as his commander in the west for a time and did not object at all a few years later to Cao Rui moving him east to attack Gongsun Yuan. Also it would had just been a very stupid, short sighted move when how Wei was often being attacked. He was a arrogant man definitely, but this seems to much like wanting him to be the big bad guy.
