All the corals are from the carboniferous mid Mississippian Period. That makes it about 340 million years old.

Extra - Concert inter-academie

Sinds 4 jaar doe ik als violist mee aan het concert inter-academie. Dit is een concert dat gegeven wordt door de academie van Zinnik en Edingen. Het is vooral een strijkorkest, maar elk jaar worden er enkele solo’s gespeeld door bijvoorbeeld een saxofonist, een harpist of een fluitist. 

Onze muziekrepertoire is zeer uitgebreid. We spelen zowel hedendaagse muziekstukken als klassiekere zoals bijvoorbeeld Gerschwin of Vivaldi. Dit jaar hebben we bijvoorbeeld Disneystukken gespeeld, begeleidt door de koor van Edingen. 

Elk jaar opnieuw ben ik mega blij om daaraan deel te nemen. Er heerst daar altijd een fantastische sfeer, omdat wat ons daar allemaal samenbrengt muziek is.

Het is leuk om te weten dat al die jaren viool die ik achter de rug heb, nuttig zijn om aan zo een concert deel te kunnen nemen. Wanneer ik soms minder zin heb om viool te spelen, probeer ik te denken aan dat concert en geeft het mij weer moed.

Tornooi ‘Soignies’ : Sophie 2°

Een tussendoortje voor Sophie (°07; u15/-36kg - woog 34.9 kg) die aantrad in het Waalse Soignies (in het Vlaams ook gekend als Zinnik, en misschien nog beter bekend als standplaats van SHAPE, de Europese NAVO commando-post).

Volgens de organisator zag ook hij de invloed van ‘Covid-19′, en waren er slechts half zoveel inschrijvingen als vorig jaar. Jammer.

Sophie zit dan ook maar in een poule van slechts 3 judoka’s, maar toch content dat we er waren. 

Startte in de 2de wedstrijd van haar poule tegen Lucie Gallez; voor mij een onbekend meisje uit een onbekende club (JC Sirault), en ze was ook geen partij, noch voor Sophie, noch voor de andere tegenstandster. Eerste contact, kubi-nage, en ippon na 15″sec. 

De andere wedstrijd was tegen Célia Van Beneden (°07; IGW - Inter Gembloux-Wavre). Deze laatste is wél, ik zou zelfs zeggen nu al een gepassioneerd judoka (judoot sinds haar 5de), die al enkele mooie resultaten boekte: - 2° op het recente BK’20 u15/-32kg; - zo vecht ze blijkbaar jaarlijks op de Adler Cup in Frankfurt:   5° 2017 (u12/-28kg), 7° 2018 (u12/-30kg), 2° 2019 (u14/-33kg); - ze werd ook 3° in Venray’18 u12; - 7° Dutch Espoir 2020 u15/-32kg na verlies tegen de beide 3° : > a) Lilian Bücker (°06; Ger; 3° Venray’19 u15/-32kg; 1° Norddeutsche Einzelmeisterschaft’19 u15/-33kg) en > b) Megan Warners (°06; Ned; 2°NK’19 u15/-32kg) 

Célia heeft zowat eenzelfde morfologie als de Thaise Tritsawan van Boom/Schelle, een kop groter dus dan Sophie; Célia probeerde systematisch over de schouder van Sophie te grijpen, maar die verhinderde dat zéér goed; na 30″sec dwong Sophie de Waalse ook in verdediging naar grond, en het was eerder een beetje ongelukkig dat Sophie na een kleine minuut in duel wat evenwicht verloor, waarvan Célia maximaal gebruik maakte (ippon); Luc moet haar op training maar wat randori’s laten vechten tegen grotere kinderen om meer te wennen aan dat type judoka; om 12h30 waren we alweer thuis, en we kijken al uit naar het volgende tornooi;

To make up for how little I talk about my OC’s, I guess I could talk about all of the roleplaying characters I’ve had instead? 

1)  Francisco Corvi, a netrunner in Cyberpunk 2020, the first tabletop game I ever played.  I never really got the chance to develop his personality much since I was in a big group and didn’t really know how to roleplay yet, but it was still a really fun game.  My favorite part was when I, in a moment of in-character recklessness, turned on an obviously evil computer, summoned AI Satan, and immediately got knocked out by AI Satan, along with our healer.  And as the hacker, I was the only one who could actually damage the boss that I’d summoned... oops.  Also he was pansexual and romanced a really cool lady who fought with a mech suit.  He proposed at the end of the campaign and rolled a critical hit. 

2)  Astrid Erichsen, an alchemist/wannabe viking for FATE Core.  My friend, the GM, has a really cool high sci-fi setting/campaign for Fate, but she held a mini campaign to test out the system first.  I knew I wanted to play as a muscly (sp?) viking woman, so this character was my chance to sort of test that personality out.  I got to blow up a lot of stuff and be a huge lesbian so it was pretty fun.

2)  Cassie “Muscles” Valkyrie, an axe wielding viking, also from Fate.  She’s from our main Fate campaign, which has been going for over a year now and is still super great!  Like the other PC’s, she has amnesia, so she started off just being a charismatic, axe-wielding viking with a grapple that has been used to slaughter countless enemies.  One time she grappled three guys at once and killed one of them with her thighs.  Then she started getting her memories back and realized that she (gasp) might not actually be a viking!  But it’s okay, because then she gained more of her memory and realized that she did in fact train on a viking planet, even if she wasn’t born there.  Also, the GM has said that our characters from the mini campaign are still somewhere in this universe, so I hope that Astrid and Muscles run into each other one day.  Viking lady OTP. 

3)  Sora Drachixius, my first dnd character from a campaign that finished up last year.  She was a dragonborn ranger on a revenge quest to find her younger sister.  She was a positive, virtuous, heroic person in a world that... wasn’t any of those, really.  Sadly, even though the campaign ended with her defeating the boss, she wasn’t able to save her sister in time.  I like to imagine that Sora is out there somewhere, a sadder, more cynical hero than she was before, hunting down bad guys with no sign of stopping, probably breathing acid on a lot of them.  Also, her two best friends are her wolf companion Lupin McFenris, and a drow who really just wanted to do ballet. 

4)  Zinnik Si’Sali, a drow rogue from my current dnd campaign.  Have I ever mentioned that the drow are my favorite “evil” race?  Because they totally are, but orcs are an extremely close second.  My guy here left his family in the Underdark to avoid an arranged marriage and learned how to be a con artist on the surface.  He really loves selling people worthless junk and bs’ing his backstory to anyone who will listen.  My favorite accomplishment is that one time he killed a bad guy, disguised himself as that bad guy, infiltrated the bad guy’s camp of other bad guys, and ended up doing the guy’s job so well that he got him a promotion.  I felt so bad for killing him then.  Maybe I just knocked him out and he’ll have a great surprise when he wakes up! 

5)  I almost forgot Alessandra Netherbank, my halfling rogue from my (other) current dnd campaign.  This is with my roleplaying group at my new school, so it’s been fun helping everyone else learn how to dnd.  She’s a swashbuckler who first became a pirate after stealing her dad’s ship.  She spent a few years on the high seas, roaming around with her other troublemaking teenage friends.  Our campaign hasn’t been going on long so I haven’t accomplished too much yet, but last session I rolled a Nat20 to pickpocket a guy and ended up just stealing all of his clothes, so that’s something.

René Magritte is without any doubt one of the greatest Belgian artists. If you are unfamiliar with his work, there are 2 museums in Brussels dedicated to his works.

This year sees the 50th anniversary of the death of Magritte, resulting in extra exhibitions in Brussels. And you can also visit the house where he spent his childhood in Jette, which is part of the Belgian capital.

But the pictures that I have shown so far are not from Brussels nor from Jette. This is a place called Zinnik/Soignies and it plays a very important role in the life of Magritte.

Every year, Magritte’s family used to vacation here. As a young boy, he used to play at the old cemetery with one of his friends. One day, Magritte saw a painter here and that is when he knew he wanted to become one as well.

This is actually one of the oldest cemeteries in Belgium. Although a bit neglected, it is still a very photogenic place.

The cemetery dates back to the 12th century and features a chapel and a museum. You can find it right in the heart of Soignies.

After our visit to the cemetery, Lars and I went for a stroll and ended up – as always – in the local church.

  Zinnik/Soignies is located to the southwest of Brussels and can be reached by train. Head to the church and then follow the signs towards the old cemetery.

Where Magritte Became Inspired René Magritte is without any doubt one of the greatest Belgian artists. If you are unfamiliar with his work, there are 2 museums in Brussels dedicated to his works.
