Consejos de escritura: crear diálogos realistas

Recordamos que el siguiente texto no ha sido redactado por el staff de ToL, solo lo hemos traducido para que pueda llegar a más personas. La autoría pertenece a @zmassani, en su tumblr podréis encontrar el post original así como en este mismo tumblr bajo la etiqueta “idioma original”.

Ya sea que estés escribiendo un párrafo o una novela, es fácil simplemente pegar algunas palabras que puedan adaptarse a la situación, sin siquiera pensar necesariamente en los motivos detrás de lo que dice el personaje. Eso es lo que esta guía trata.

¿Qué es el diálogo?

Esto es lo que Wikipedia tiene que decir al respecto:

"Diálogo es una forma literaria y teatral que consiste en un intercambio conversacional hablado o escrito entre dos o más personas. Sus principales orígenes históricos como recurso narrativo, filosófico o didáctico se encuentran en la literatura clásica griega e india, en particular en el antiguo arte de la retórica".

Para resumirlo: Un diálogo es una conversación entre dos (o más) personas.

Recuerda que tu personaje es un ser humano (generalmente).

Nosotros los humanos somos pequeñas criaturas difíciles. Somos complicados, podemos ser todos felices rayos de sol en un minuto y convertirnos en el monstruo de Frankenstein en el segundo; nos lamentamos y nos lastimamos; obsesionándonos extrañamente con alguien con quien apenas hemos tenido dos palabras de conversación; nos entusiasmamos con las cosas más pequeñas; Caemos en los pozos más profundos de la tristeza sin una razón aparente; y todo esto está bien. Somos un conjunto de sentimientos de los que a veces ni siquiera nos damos cuenta, que es, al menos para mí, lo más agradable de los juegos de rol.

No importa quién o cuál sea tu personaje; ya sea que estés escribiendo un personaje original o completando cosas para un canon; Tienes toda su complejidad en tus manos. Tienes tantas cosas pequeñas que debes tener en cuenta que a veces incluso puede resultar un poco abrumador, pero lo más importante a tener en cuenta es no salir del personaje. Hay una línea muy fina entre crear profundidad en alguien y hacer que actúe de una manera que nunca actuaría, pero con la práctica esa brecha aumentará hasta que estés en aguas claras.

¿Se ha metido tu personaje en una situación en la que no sabes cómo reaccionaría? Toma un respiro. Ve y toma una taza de té antes de volver a sentarte. Lo que debes hacer es pensar en cómo es tu personaje. Lee su biografía (y si no tiene una, hazla ahora, pues es una gran ayuda cuando te siente perdido) y concéntrate. Una vez que estés seguro de que está pensando con claridad y con carácter, estarás listo para abordar la reacción. Y aquí es donde entra el significado del diálogo.

Lo que tu personaje está sintiendo por dentro refleja lo que están diciendo en voz alta.

El énfasis en la palabra refleja. Me he dado cuenta de que este es el mayor problema al crear un diálogo realista. Especialmente en la palabra escrita, la mayor parte del peso cae al lado de describir lo que está pasando; dentro y fuera; pero eso no significa que debas olvidar la importancia de un buen diálogo. A menos que tu personaje sea del tipo de balbucear todo lo que está pasando en voz alta (o está en medio de un alboroto de rabia y escupe todo lo que puede sin pensar en ello), la mayoría de sus sentimientos se manifiestan a través de sus acciones, sin palabras.

Así que no les hagas demasiado conscientes de sí mismos.

Esto se aplica tanto a lo que están pensando como a lo que están diciendo. Si tu personaje está atravesando una crisis interna sobre algo, escríbelo; dibuja al lector debajo de la piel de tu personaje y hazlo tan real que pueda sentir la agonía y la frustración que está sucediendo.

Piensa en ti en una situación confusa; o cualquier situación. ¿Sabe al instante qué decir, qué hacer, hacia dónde se dirige la discusión, en qué está pensando el otro? ¿Puedes leer la mente de los demás? ¿Siempre estás seguro de todo lo que sientes, tu mente está libre de distracciones? Estoy asumiendo que no? Ese es exactamente mi punto. Al escribir un personaje que realmente quieras representar de la manera más realista posible, deja que sean vulnerables a los errores. Permítales que digan todas las cosas incorrectas en el momento exacto y no incluyan demasiada información en cada oración que escribas. Las situaciones deberían desarrollarse naturalmente; no a través de un monólogo demasiado revelador que deja a su posible contraparte preguntándose qué demonios acaba de suceder allí.

Como conclusión:

El buen diálogo tiene que ver con la interacción. Si un escritor pisa a sus contrapartes sin dejar espacio para las reacciones, se come al menos la mitad de los finales posibles y los rincones y recovecos del desarrollo del personaje que podrían haber tenido la oportunidad de examinar con un poco de paciencia. En general, el diálogo realista es realmente fácil cuando se tiene en cuenta una guía simple: no des todo cuando solo puede echar un vistazo.
