what is a music tournament… i understand tournaments in the context of sports competitions …. but where do the characters come from…. and how do they compete….. r they musicians…?!?! pls explain like im 5 LOL

Okay, so, like. lemme try and explain LOL Mashup/Music tournaments are honestly a bit more analogous to a Tumblr tournament, honestly? The general voting etiquette is far different, though. You make up a number of contestants (Usually 8 or 16 for the most common double-elimination format) from... Just about any media, honestly. You can even use OCs! Or real people, such as a musician or comedian you really enjoy! And then you give them all sourcelists, which are basically lists that outline the sort of music you'd use in their tracks (Usually as mashups) So, like. Sonic the Hedgehog could be in a tournament. Like in a typical Tumblr tournament, nobody's really "playing as" Sonic here and it's not like he's a real musician. His sourcelist, playing off of things related to him (like Crush 40's Live & Learn for some music genres), could be like: - Songs from SEGA Properties - Alternative & Hard Rock - Songs about Going Fast & General Speed And then the tournament runners go and make mashups with this sourcelist as a guideline for songs they can use! So you could use a song from Jet Set Radio under SEGA properties as a backing instrumental for a mashup. You put Sonic up against some other character with a different sourcelist in a bracket, and then tell people to vote for which one they want to see move on and have more mashups! Sometimes tournaments will also basically double as crossover fanfictions and have lore for matches, but it's generally expected that you don't vote for contestants based off of lore or material that otherwise doesn't involve the sourcelist/tracks. Vote responsibly, and check out the mashups first if you're unsure of who to root for. You might be surprised with who you end up maining!
