Saeko sighed. The young lord really shouldn’t have been in this position; he was still in his teens, and lacked the experience of life. Most likely Senzo had sold the idea to him in order to ‘keep Takigakure from risking their own safety’.

“Shijo, Norinaga, and Kenichi are currently operating in the daimyō’s estate. But we haven’t heard much in the way of news from them lately…”

Another worrying development. It wasn’t entirely unheard of for shinobi to be late providing intel, but in this case…

“Senzo Matsutoya,” Saeko replied. Within the folder were files and photos of an older man with greying hair and a mustache. Seeming perfectly ordinary, yet…there was something off in his gaze.

“Claims to be a merchant from the Land of Birds,” she began, “somehow he wormed his way into the court and the young lord is rather taken with him. Already he’s been taking advice and counsel from Senzo, and there have been concerning rumors floating around. One of which caused me to seek you out as soon as I heard it.”

She sighed, “Senzo has been trying to convince the young lord that budget cuts need to be made; that he needs to be more frugal with his spending. One of his suggestions, apparently, is to do something similar to what the daimyō of the Land of Wind did; outsource jobs to other shinobi villages who offer their services for a cheaper price. He’s been trying to convince the young lord that the money would be better spent on other things. What those other things are, I am not privy to.”

Shaking her head, she let out another sigh. “Part of me desperately wants to believe this is merely some fool merchant who thinks he can make a profit…but the sensible part of me says this could be a foreign shinobi attempting to weaken us from within. The Land of Birds is right on the border of the Land of Earth, after all; it wouldn’t surprise me if Iwagakure had a hand in this.”

Another sigh. “It pains me to think that the young lord would listen to this…his father was good to us.”

Her brow furrowed. “It’s not the young lord that concerns me. It’s the stranger who has the young lord’s ear I’m worried about.”
