My dear lgbt+ kids, 

I didn’t feel empowered by “Call me by your name”. To me, it was such a weird story - I didn’t even finish the movie because it was honestly uncomfortable to watch for me. I just felt no connection to the characters at all and I really don’t get what’s so meaningful about the plot, either. 

Is the message of this post “That movie is not empowering to the lgbt+community”? No. That’d be a very silly thing to say - many people love that movie and feel empowered by it. They see a bit of themselves in one of the characters, the movie got them thinking about their own sexuality etc. 

The movie can empower you - and at the same time, it can mean nothing to me. Neither of us would be in the wrong here. 

In general, when it comes to lgbt+ characters or storylines, we can argue about good representation vs. bad representation. But empowerment and that feeling of “When I watch this movie, I feel better about myself” or “This movie helped my explore my sexuality”, that’s just so so subjective. 

It’s really hard to generalize and say that anything is empowering for the whole community. I’d even dare to say that it’s impossible to find such a thing - the lgbt+ community is made up of so many different people with their unique stories and feelings and tastes and struggles… how could ANY piece of media magically make all of us feel good? 

Don’t force yourself to find meaning in a movie you don’t relate to and don’t judge people for not feel inspired by a character that means the world to you. We will have different opinions on things, it’s normal. It doesn’t make either of us a bad person - it just means we are individuals!
