Love in a hopeless Place 40
Synopsis: She was barely grown up, when she stepped into the bar that was the center of Zaun's resistance. The people she met there would forever change her life, and one of them especially. Silco x reader/OC; first-person POV; overall rating: E for Explicit; canon-compliant (though I might make a stretch on the timeline here and there to make things fit my symbolism); age gap! (younger female, older male); 9 chapters; 45k; cis female reader/POV; no beta-reader; completed Chapter ratings/warnings: G for General, mentions of wounds and death, mentions of suicidal thoughts, present tense! Wordcount: 1.2k Author's note: Hi and welcome to the last part of my fanfic. I gotta admit, putting this down to paper and then into my computer and onto my blog has been quite the haze. I was writing this think like a mad man in under three weeks starting Jan. 3rd. Now I've published it completely on this side and by now it should also be already cross posted on ao3. HERE should be the link xD Thanks to everyone interested in my stupid story that I've first and foremost have written for my own pleasure. I don't know how many people this actually read here, I put this all in the queue and just let it run through but I hope, some of you liked this journey. Maybe once I'll come back to this story, work it over and fix the pacing (Act III is literally half of the story). But maybe I don't after all this is just a hobby. Maybe I didn't even get a single comment on this, who knows. I'm not tumblr famous or anything and if nobody decided to spread my writing, it might go down in Tumblr's nirvana. But I have it here forever, and that's fine. Comments would be appreciated! If anybody would be interested in seeing more of this universe, feel free to hit me up with questions or suggestions. I'm also willing to expand on Jinx's and Ekko's fate. (Timebomb for life!)

Act III
Chapter III
Part 3/3
"And now you show up in front of my door and tell me, that it's your fault, Silco is dead." My eyes wander over the broken frame of the blue-haired girl on my sofa.
"I told you, it was an accident." Jinx looks horrible, her hair is cut short, only her bangs fall over her face. There are badly healed wounds all over her arms and, I suppose, whole body, but she covers it with a dirty old shirt. Her pants are completely destroyed. But she still wears Silco's stubbed belt and gloves. There's a scar running across the side of her face, only missing the eye by a finger's breadth. If she wasn't looking up to me right now, her hair would cover it perfectly. "I've changed. I promise. It were the voice in my head." Her own voice breaks, and tears dwell out of her gleaming pink eyes.
I hadn't seen her since the night she almost died, so I didn't know about that change until now. The color of Shimmer makes my skin crawl. I'm still sinking to my knees to hug her in an embrace.
Jinx had always been that broken kid to me.
But I didn't have it in me, to fix her. Maybe I now have it. "It's fine," I breathe. "We'll figure it out. It was right that you came to me."
She hugs me back, and we stay like this for what feels like forever.
Then I get back on my feet. "You should take a bath. I'll go fetch some new clothes for you. My pre-pregnancy stuff could fit you."
She smiles at me weakly, and I guide her through the nursery. She tries to peek at the baby, but I shove her to the bathroom.
When I place a white blouse and some cargos on a counter, she's already in the tub.
"Can I see her, please?", she whispers.
I walk over to her and help her clean her back.
She's thick with dirt. There is still scurf on some wounds.
"We should have you see a doctor, kiddo. Maybe they can do something against that scaring."
"I don't care," she admits. "Everyone should see that I'm broken."
I sigh and place my head against hers. "You're not broken. You're perfect the way you are."
She looks at me with eyes wide open as if she sees a ghost.
I stand, patting her hair. "Take your time. Then you can meet your sister." I hear her sniffle as I turn around and wipe away a tear myself. I wait for her in the nursery. From the money Sevika sent me, I had bought a rocking chair.
My daughter is sprawled out on my chest, almost asleep.
Finally, Jinx steps out of the bathroom, her hair still wet. She drags the stubbed belt through the loops of my pants. She's so thin, of course, not even my pre-pregnancy clothes fit her right. In the neat white blouse, she almost looks like an accountant herself. She carefully walks over to us, bare feet leaving no noises at all on the wooden planks. "Hey baby," she coos.
I turn my daughter so she faces Jinx. "Look, Soie, this is your older sister, Jinx. She came all the way from Zaun to find us."
Soie seems unimpressed by the sight of the blue-haired person in front of her, but Jinx's bright eyes are glittering.
"She's so tiny."
"Midwife says she's average," I huff a laugh.
"I bet she'll have Silco's eyes."
I make a vague noise. "Babies' eyes change with time. It's not said they'll stay as light." Though I already noticed a shift to a more green blue in the few months she's been there.
"I'll protect you from all the mean bullies out there, promised," Jinx coos, and now Soie cracks a smile at her.
"I guess she likes you," I admit. "You want to hold her?"
Jinx makes a defensive gesture. "Oh, I wouldn't know how."
"Not a problem, sit down." I get out of the chair and let her take the place. "There you go," I hum as I place the baby in her arms.
Soie stays calm, only examines the new face throughout.
"See, I told you she likes you." I see tears brim in Jinx's eyes.
It's ironic to see my daughter in the arms of the person who killed her father. But then I also just see a proud elder sibling holding her baby sister. There isn't much left of the Jinx she used to be a year ago.
I watch the pair get to know each other, then quickly go to get a picture for Sevika.
It was her, that sent Jinx to me.
I finally put down Soie for her nap and invite Jinx for some tea. As we walk out of the nursery, her eyes land on the jacket that hangs besides the door.
"That's Silco's," she mutters and rests a hand against the gruff fabric.
"Yes, it used to be. But it also used to be mine. I haven't seen it in 14 years, but Sevika found it for me."
Even after all these years, it still smells faintly like I remembered it. Even if my perfume also lingers on the inner lining.
I bite my lip to stop tears from bubbling up again. "Come on, help me in the kitchen."
"I'll be right there," she murmurs and walks back into the bathroom. When she joins me in the kitchen, she has a pile of leather in her hands. "Do you think we could fix those?"
I recognize Silco's old working cloves. They are full of holes and tears. I take them in my hands to inspect them. "You know, I work for a hatter. I could have his people take a look at them."
"I would like that," Jinx replies.
We finish preparing the tea, and we sit down at the dining table. We say nothing, but the quiet is comfortable.
I dance around asking for the inevitable. But it finally breaks out of my mouth. "So, only Sevika knows you're still alive?"
Jinx nods. "It's for the better if everyone thinks I'm gone for good."
"What about Vi?"
Her gaze drops into her tea. "She's best off without me. You know, a friend of mine told me about another timeline he saw, in which Vi is dead, and I am the happy one. In this timeline, I should be the dead one, and she should be happy."
I am confused by how literal she means "saw another timeline", but I decide not to ask too many questions. "And this friend? Does he know?"
Jinx looks at me, eyes wide. "Of course not. Ekko would instantly run to Vi."
"Ekko?!", I beam, remembering the little boy that Benzo had taken in. "I thought he was dead too!"
Jinx shifts in her seat. "Thank the Gods, he's not. He saved me. Us all." Her gaze grew distant, and her fingers brush over the short hair on her neck.
I sigh, but don't want to dig into her much further. "If he saved you once, he might be glad to hear you're still around."
We finish our tea in quiet, then Soie demands my attention again.
After she is settled again, Jinx comes to me, a crooked smile on her face.
"You don't happen to have a postcard?"
I laugh and place my hands on her shoulder. "I even happen to have stamps."

Act III
Chapter III
Part 2/3
The next few months went by in a haze.
First I found a small apartment with two rooms, a little kitchen and an en suite bathroom. Of course, I instantly wrote back home, but yet again I got no answer. With rent coming up, I would be left without any money.
Luckily, Roxanne soon really presented me with a job.
I could work for a hatter whose store was around 20 minutes by foot away from my new home.
He allowed me to work at home once the baby would be there and overall only needed my service three times a week. He didn't pay me much, but it was enough to pay rent and buy food.
I heard about horrible fighting in Piltover, but tried to shut the news out as good as possible.
Still, the rumors were what kept me hopeful.
My letters probably got lost in the chaos of the war. Soon it would all be over. Then they'd reach Silco and he would come get us.
At day, I was so busy that I had no time to ponder, but at night, sleep came very badly at me. I was sleeping on a sofa bed, as I wanted the bedroom to be the baby's room, and lying on it got more and more bothersome the more my belly grew.
The midwife Roxanne recommended me was a strict yet caring person. She reminded me a little of Sevika with her short sentences and slight facial hair. But she was well versed in her discipline, and she promised me she would get me well through this.
Finally, my daughter was born on a sunny, yet cold day.
Oh, how I wished Silco could be there with us and see her.
Of course, he had known all along that it was a girl. Silco with a boy? Unthinkable.
She truly was the prettiest little thing I had ever seen, lush black hair framed her face, her eyes still blue as the sky above Demacia. She was a good baby, as if she sensed the deep sadness that lingered in her mother, and she never gave me a hard time.
The letter that let my world fall down arrived almost exactly four weeks after she was born.
My hands were shaking as I received the letter from Piltover and I had to sit down to open it.
There was no sender on it, but the writing wasn't Silco's neat one, so much I could tell.
This was the handwriting of someone who wasn't used to wielding a pen.
"Dear Missus."
I looked at the scribbly handwriting and instantly knew who this letter was from. Only Sevika called me like that.
"I'm afraid to tell you, but the boss is dead. Has been since the night you left. But I didn't wanna shock you in your condition. I guessed that baby should be there now. Are you fine? Can I have a picture? Things here are a bit wild. You should stay where you are. I'll send you what you need. Money is not a problem either. I hope you are good. - Sevika."
I clutched the letter and crumbled the paper against my heart. At first, I didn't feel anything.
Everything was suddenly numbed, the noises from the streets, the sound of my breath, the crumbling of paper.
I felt as if I were packed in cotton. But then I noticed the small drips fall down on the floor in front of my feet. I had feared it, but I had no idea he was actually gone.
The last interaction we shared would forever be him shoving me out of his office and locking me out.
Oh, how I missed his hands around my shoulders, his lips on mine, his scent that never failed to sweep me off my feet. I even missed kicking him at night for his constant snoring. To think I would never be experiencing this again left me hopeless, and I curled up into a ball on the sofa until the weak wailing of my daughter reminded me of my liability. My feet almost didn't carry me to her nursery, and I faltered as I looked at her pitch black hair.
Silco had hoped she would look like me, now I hoped she would develop some of the features I had loved so much.
"There, there, Mommy is here," I whispered, cradling her and sinking to the ground.
Seeing me upset, made her even more fuzzy, but I brushed over her little cheek to dry her tears.
All the more if there was nobody left to dry mine.
"He would have loved you so much," I whispered and held her tight against my shoulder.
She cooed at me, and I actually managed a smile.
I had to be strong. If not for me, then for her.
In the evening, I managed to put down an answer for Sevika. I didn't need or want much.
A little money sure would help, but I had a job, and we were fine so far.
I just wanted to pay the people back that had been so kind to me, and I still owed the midwife some. I also sent Sevika the requested picture.
We stayed in contact, and each month she demanded a new one. She never commented on the baby and also didn't reveal how she was doing.
But I got it from the news, that she became the first Zaunite councilor. I thought that Silco would have liked that. I sure did.
She also never told me what happened to Silco or to Jinx. She only made sure that my daughter and I had everything we wanted.

Act III
Chapter III
Part 1/3
I had no idea the man I loved for 14 years died at the same time that I was on an airship to Demacia. I sat there between merchants and officials and couldn't help but let my tears fall.
Once in a while, a steward asked me if I was alright or needed anything, but what could they offer me to make the pain go away?
I eventually passed out and awoke to a clear blue sky the next morning. When we finally arrived at the port of Demacia, I was nervous to get through the control, but they checked my papers and let me pass.
Silco must have really pulled some strings to make this possible.
But what now?
I knew not a single soul in this city that was so different from where I came from. First I needed some place to stay, so I went looking for a cheap room.
My luggage was heavier than I anticipated, carrying it around everywhere, but I finally found a free, affordable room to stay at for at least a week.
I immediately got down to write my note back home, where Silco could reach me for now. After entrusting the den mother with the letter, I went back to my room and fell down on the narrow, yet uncomfortable bed. I could hear the hustle of the streets through the closed window. I don't know how long I remained inert like that, but a knock on the door startled me so much that I almost fell out of bed.
It was the den mother who wanted to confirm she had posted my letter.
I thanked her, but instead of closing the door again, the elderly woman stepped into the room.
"I don't want to be nosy," she started and locked her hands in front of her lap. "But are you alright? You seem very sad."
I sighed. There were no tears left for me to shed, yet I felt like I could never be happy again. I didn't know what to tell her. I sighed again and nodded slowly. "I'm not really okay...", I admitted. "I had to leave my family behind, and I miss them already."
"You're from Piltover, right?"
"Zaun," I corrected.
The lady seemed unsure what to do with this information. "If you're hungry, I'm preparing lunch every day. You know, usually only day workers live here. I have some bits left, if you want any."
I wanted to refuse, but remembered I had to take good care of me. "That'd be nice."
The lady smiled at me. "Come downstairs to the guestroom. I'll introduce you to my husband and our daughter."
While I ate, the whole family gathered around me.
The daughter - Roxanne - might have been around my age, maybe a little younger. She was also already married and had three kids, but her family didn't live at the guest house.
They were all very friendly people, even if I had heard the contrary about the people of Demacia. They were a little too curious about what brought me to their city, though, so I tried to hide the true meanings of my exile.
Most of the day workers were gruff and unpleasant to be around, but I wasn't here to make new friends.
After a week, I started getting impatient, when I didn't hear of Silco yet. So I wrote another letter, that I would go looking for a place to stay permanently and that I would give him the address as soon as possible.
The den owners were nothing but kind towards me. They promised to keep an eye open for a place I could rent. But housing was difficult in this city, like it seemed in every big place in the world.
After a month, I still hadn't heard from back home.
There were just rumors, that it was going haywire in Piltover again.
I heard about dead councilors and assumed it was the revolution going on, that we always had dreamed about.
My pregnancy slowly started to show, I noticed how the den mother eyed me when I sat alone for lunch.
I needed to hear from Silco. If nothing changed, I would run out of money in two months. And I had to see a doctor to check on the baby. So when I met Roxanne in the hallway one day, I stopped her.
She looked at me, slightly wary.
I scratched my head. "You've got three kids, right? Do you like... know anybody who... um... delivers them?"
The furrow of her brows relaxed as realization struck her. "So my Mum is right, ye've got a bun in the oven."
I was startled over her bluntness, but still made a vague gesture.
"Is that the reason ya ran away?"
I repeated the gesture. "Kinda..."
She nodded firmly. "I can introduce ya to my midwife. She delivered all three of them - at my home."
A sudden wave of nervousness crept over my body. I hadn't thought much about delivering this child yet. I had wanted this so much, but now I was afraid.
"Yer first one?", she inquired softer and placed a hand on my arm.
I nodded again, and she gave me a reassuring squeeze.
"It's no fun, I tell ya. But if they smile at you for the first time, that's the best feeling in the world."
I released the breath I didn't notice I was holding.
"If ya need anything else, let me know, yeah? I think I still got plenty of clothes from my kids."
"What if you'll get a fourth one?", I piped, barely recognizing my own voice.
"Then you'll just give them back."
I felt tears tickle in my eyes. How could anybody be so nice to a complete stranger like me?
"Hey, I'm sure you'll figure it out. Ya seem to me like a tough lady."
I don't know why. Maybe it was the way her braided blond hair fell over her shoulder, but for a second I had to think of Felicia. She was giving the same warm energy.
A tear rolled down my cheek, and Roxanne placed a hand on my cheek.
"It's gonna be alright. If yer diligent, Demacia is yer place to be." She turned to leave, but I again held her back.
"I need a job."
She looked at me again, considering me for a while. "Difficult in yer condition. What have you done in Piltover?"
"In Zaun I was an accountant."
She nodded slightly. "Yeah, I figured that ya didn't work with those hands."
My once long and manicured nails were now completely bitten down, yet the fingers still lacked the callus of hard work, except for my thumb and middle finger from holding a pen all day.
"Ma Dad does our accounting. And I guess you should read into our tax system. But I keep my ears open."
I smiled, thankful for the help she offered, and then we parted ways.

Act III
Chapter II
Part 8/8
The next day I prepared my luggage for the travel and was informed, that my airship would start in two days already at 9 PM. But I had to pass the border by 7 PM before it would be closed for the night again.
The driver would bring me to the port and help me with my bags, but in Demacia I would be on my own.
So I couldn't pack too much, only the essentials, until I found a place to stay. Then I would message Silco, and he would send me everything I needed, from clothes to money.
As it was time for me to leave, Silco just arrived back from a long day out. He placed his coat on a hook and watched me walk behind the driver, who was carrying my two bags. He nodded at him, and the man left us alone. Placing his hands on my upper arms, he rubbed them slightly. "It's good that you leave, dear," he reassured me. His voice cracked slightly at the end.
Tears tickled in the corners of my eyes.
"I just met the young new councilman, Talis." He sighed deeply. "He is willing to give me everything I dreamed of. An independent nation of Zaun."
I looked at him curiously. "Th- that's amazing. That means I don't have to leave, right?"
He looked pained as he locked his eyes with mine. "Talis has one demand. He has a few, to be fair, but only one I can't give him. He wants Jinx."
I jumped at the thought about it. "What do you mean? Y-you won't do that, will you?"
"Of course not," he gritted. "She's giving me a hard time right now, but she's my daughter. You know that I wouldn't let anything happen to my loved ones. I thought if I sent you away, I would get rid of my only weakness. I didn't think they would use her against me."
I picked the skin around my thumbnail, but he stopped me before the wound could bleed. "What does that mean?"
"I'm afraid I can't prevent going to war. Jinx finally has to make this weapon work. I have to find her before enforcers do. I somehow have to stop this madness."
Now the tickling tears fell out of my eyes, and nobody was there to stop them.
Silco kissed me goodbye.
I didn't want this to be our last encounter. "Come get us," I cried as he pulled away from me.
He nodded, but there was no hope in his eyes. "I hope she looks like you," he breathed, brushed his hand against my belly, and then shoved me out of the room.
The door fell shut behind me. I heard the key turn around, locking me out. I sobbed against the door, forehead hammering against the wood, but I didn't get another glance at the man I loved.
"Miss, we'll have to leave or else we don't make it until the border closes." The driver softly placed a hand on my shoulder, and I let me get dragged away.

Act III
Chapter II
Part 7/8
We didn't get the time to bask in our bliss for long. It was as if the universe just didn't allow us to be happy.
So only a few days later, I found Silco sitting on his side of the bed, already out of his vest, tie and shoes. His sleeves were neatly rolled to his elbows, his face rested in his hands. He hadn't been to bed the night before, and I hadn't seen him in over a day.
I wouldn't make a scene now, I was way too glad to see him in one piece again. "What's wrong, love?", I hummed and stepped between his legs.
He placed his head against my abdomen. "I almost lost her." "Huh?" I made puzzled, trying to get a look at his face but failed.
"Jinx. She almost died last night."
I sharply sucked in air. "What happened? Where is she? Is she alright?"
Silco pulled me closer again, burying his face in my dress. "I don't know," he muffled. "Singed said yes, but - I went looking for her everywhere. I couldn't find her."
"Singed," I murmured. "What did he do?"
"I don't know for sure," he admitted. "He sedated me."
We stayed like that for a long moment, me trying to add the missing pieces of his story, before Silco slowly pulled away from me.
"You have to get out of here, love. I arranged everything. You can pass the border and get on an airship to Demacia. Wait for my instructions until the waters have smoothed out around here again. I promise, I won't fail you. Or her." He placed a hand on my belly.
I quickly shook my head. "No. Please, don't send me away. Don't push me away from you. I'll go through this with you." Pointing at my belly, I added: "I can't handle this without you."
His hands wandered to the back of my thighs as he looked at me thoughtfully. He looked ten years older. "Please, just this one time, do what I tell you. If you stay here, you'll be my weakness. And I can't have that right now. There might be a war coming, kid. I don't want our child to be born under such circumstances. And you can handle this, you're so much stronger than you know."
A tear strayed out of my eyes and fell onto Silco's crimson shirt. I understood, even if I didn't want to.
"Don't cry," he pleaded, wiping my cheek with his coarse thumb. As he pulled me close, I straddled him, going into the kiss starving.
"Impatient as always," he teased, only to kiss me with the passion of a dying man. His hands slid into my hair, cupping my neck as he admired my face. "I need to remember each line on your face," he explained, tilting my neck to get me into the light of the nightstand lamp. "So beautiful. You'll do what I asked of you?"
I nodded, reluctantly. "But you fetch us as soon, as the waters have soothed again."
"Of course." He hid his face in the nape of my neck. "Now come. I don't just want to remember your face," he smirked, digging his hands under my dress.
I instantly moaned at his touch on my hips. My whole body was on alert. The hormones made me sensitive to each contact but also left me touch-starved.
Getting the eager response from my body got him all revved up too, and he pulled the dress over my head in one swift movement. My bra was sent flying in the same direction. The way he cupped and squeezed my breasts with his large hands and sucked and teased my nipples with his crooked teeth was already enough that I couldn't restrain myself anymore.
I dragged at the buttons of his shirt, almost tearing off one or the other. Hastily nestling him out of the shirt, I sucked at his collarbone. I wanted it to stain. I felt powerful, thinking about him going into his negotiations with my love bite on him.
Silco sucked in the air sharply at the stinging sensation. "You dirty little animal," he groaned and removed me from his skin. But the damage was already done. He looked at me, challenging. "You satisfied now?"
I shock my head slightly. "Far from."
He swiftly tossed me to my back, got out of the remainders of his clothes, and threw away my undies. Sinking between my legs, already let his eyes roll to the back of his head. "I'll miss you so much," he panted onto my skin, leaving trails of butterfly kisses all over my torso.
"Promise to come get me as soon as possible," I demanded again, my long fingernails digging into his shoulders.
"I promise. I can't be a day longer away from you as necessary."
His infatuation with me, made my heart tumble.
He set a fast pace that quickly had me curl my toes.
But I soon had to calm him down. "Maybe it's better, if I'll top," I suggested, and he instantly placed a hand on my still normal-looking belly.
"I didn't hurt her," he swallowed thickly. "Did I?"
I giggled and flipped him to his back without breaking the contacts. "Rubbish. They're happy as long as mommy is happy. I just don't want this to be over so soon."
A relieved huff of air left his lungs. "Well then, go on."
The sultry roll of my hips soon had both of us moan profanities at each other.
He basked in my sight as I rode into my first high of the night, remembering every mole on my body. He soon followed me over the edge, stiffening and relaxing under my touch. His moveable eye fell shut, and my face dug into his chest.
I remained hunched over until the hammering of his heart against my ear got slower. Then I shuffled on his lap, spreading the sticky mixture of our fluids evenly. I quickly noticed him twitch between my legs and had him ready for round two.
"You glutton," he panted as he went for an open-mouthed kiss. "Have mercy on an old man like me."
"You're not that old," I teased as I slowly rolled my hips against his again. "And I'm lucky, everything's still working as it's supposed to."
He clicked his tongue about the teasing, digging his fingers into the flesh of my thighs to make me pick up the pace. He gritted his teeth, chasing his next high, and finally grew impatient himself as he flipped me back to my back. Throwing my legs over his shoulders, he thrust into me just the way I liked it.
Soon my head went light again, as the heat pooled between my legs.
We both let go at the same time, lips, limps and fluids entangled.
Satisfied exhaustion befell me, but we couldn't just go to sleep now. Not when he wanted me gone by the end of the week.
"Don't look at me like that," he muttered as he lit himself a cigarette. "I told you, no smoking until she's here."
"But second-hand smoking is fine?", I teased.
He groaned, took one deep drag, and then stubbed the butt into the ashtray. "You're right, sorry."
"Don't be." I rolled to my stomach, still watching him carefully. "I love watching you do things with your hands."
He grinned at me. "I know. Don't you think it's a little late for a third round? You need to rest. You have to pack your stuff tomorrow and be ready when I have a place for you on the airship."
My shoulders dropped at the thought of it.
"Come here," he opened his arms, and I crawled onto his chest, savoring his embrace, wishing I could preserve the moment. "It's going to be alright, dove. I can handle this, and our future will be bright. And now that I think about it, I might also handle a third round."

Act III
Chapter II
Part 6/8
I found myself on the couch in Silco's office as my eyes fluttered open again.
He sighed heavily. "Finally."
I turned my head to face him.
He was crouching besides me, a worried line on his forehead.
"I've sent the driver for the doctor. And he better be here timely."
"You shouldn't have," I protested. "I'm fine. I told you, it's just the stress." As I was trying to get up, he firmly held me in place.
"You won't lie to me about this anymore, and I'll stay here until the doctor tells me, what you've got." His face was hard and didn't allow a no for an answer.
I threw my head against the armrest, huffing in annoyance.
Neither of us said a word until the door swung open. We both expected the doc, but it was Sevika.
She raised an eyebrow at us, shortly forgetting her concern. "Um," she regained her composure. "Boss, I need you downstairs real quickly."
"Can't you see, that I'm busy right now?", Silco sneered, but still got on his feet.
"It's Finn, Sir. And I've got a feeling, he won't take no for an answer." Silco huffed and ran a hand through his hair. Pointing his long digit at me, he warned: "You won't move, 'til the doc is there. If you lie to me again, I will find out."
I rolled my eyes, defeated. "Fine, let Sevika stay with me if you don't trust me. I'm sure she will spill the tea."
He nodded at Sevika who looked at me in return. As Silco strode out of the office, she quietly sat down at my feet.
"Are you ill, Missus?", she tried to strike up a conversation.
"I don't know," I sighed, placing an arm over my eyes.
A few minutes later, the doctor finally arrived. He raised an eyebrow when I told him that Sevika would oversee the check-up, but then went right to work. He did some tests, asked some personal questions, and did some deeper investigations. As he finished his examination, he confirmed my suspicions. He closed his bag, smiled at me and congratulated me before slipping out of the room as quietly as he had come.
Sevika looked at me uncertainly. "Should... should I get the boss?"
I nodded, flabbergasted, my mind racing around the revelation.
Sevika vanished and left me with my face in my hands, not sure if those were happy or sad tears that came streaming down my cheeks. As Sevika finally brought Silco, he crouched down in front of me again, taking my wrists in his hands and pulling mine away from my face.
"What is it?", he huffed, eyebrows at his hairline.
I didn't know how to say it.
He was so tense all the time.
"I'm pregnant," I finally managed.
His eyes restlessly searched my face, but I couldn't read the expression on his. He only held me at arm's length, his nostrils working as he was digesting the revelation. "Now of all times," he grumbled and dropped his head between his arms.
I was shaking, his reaction left me greatly insecure. "I thought you'd be happy," I piped, startled over the weakness of my voice.
He remained hunched over for a few unbearable moments before coming to his feet and placing his arms around my shoulders. "Of course I am happy, stupid. But you know that it's been a few tiring days for me. I just - I don't get it. All these years, nothing. And now all of a sudden..."
I wanted to look at his face, but his embrace was iron. I didn't get it either. Maybe my body was acting in last-minute panic. I shivered as he finally let go of me and looked at me with a smile on his face.
It didn't quite reach his eyes, though. "How far are you?"
"Around ten to twelve weeks," I replied uncertainly.
He closed his aquamarine eye for a second. "So I only got six more months to settle this mess." He took a quick step away from me. "Jinx has to finish her weapon. We can't waste more time."
I grabbed his hand and made him sit with me, before he could leave. "Please don't leave me alone just now. Let us enjoy this moment a little."
At first, he tensed when I placed my head against his chest, but then he placed a hand on my head and relaxed noticeably. "I'd appreciate it if you'd continue your paperwork. But no more meetings and interviews for you. And no running around the lanes without guards. I need you to be even more safe than ever. I couldn't bear losing this now. Oh, and no more cigarettes!"
I looked at him, offended. "Are you trying to observe me now, or what? I know what's good and bad for me, thank you. And I won't let you lock me up in here."
"I'm not locking you up," he sighed. "But things might get a little uncomfortable around here soon, and I just want to know you are safe. Both of you."
I looked up at him, eyebrows pulled together. "It's nice of you, but I'm just as much a native to Zaun as you are. I know the lanes and never felt fear once in my life there. The doctor says everything looks well. The baby should be settled down nicely by now. Nothing to be worried about."
Silco hugged me tightly, exhaling audibly. "Just promise, you'll be careful."
"I'm pregnant, not ill," I retorted.
He raised an eyebrow at me. "That looked a little different when you went tumbling down on the floor only an hour ago."

Act III
Chapter II
Part 5/8
The next morning he let me sleep in, and when I woke up, I was really feeling way better.
I got out of bed, had a refreshing bath, and finally went back to work at around noon.
The only thing missing was my appetite.
But soon I noticed, that the whole base seemed to be in uproar. I went to Silco's office, but he wasn't there.
Sevika, Jinx, nobody was to be found.
So I headed downstairs again, where the crew had just picked up their work of preparing for the next night. I went for Thieram who was dutifully polishing glasses behind the counter. "What's going on here?", I demanded to know. "Where is the boss?"
Thieram looked at me quickly and put glass and cloth aside. "I don't know for sure, but there was an explosion in Piltover last night. The boss was fuming when he heard about it. I think it was the scaremonger."
I gasped slightly and bit my lip in frustration. I nodded at Thieram and turned to leave again. "Don't let the boss hear you called Jinx that way," I advised him before getting back upstairs. If it was another problem with Jinx, I was better off letting Silco deal with it alone.
He knew how to handle his daughter and would later come to me to brag about his great handling of the situation.
I had trouble getting my work done this day. My head always drifted away, the longer I heard nothing about Silco and Jinx.
The club opened up, and neither was at home.
Finally, I was sick of wandering between the bar, my office, Silco's office, and the rooftop terrace to have a smoke, so I went to bed early. But I was just tossing and turning in the sheets until the door was finally opened slowly, a flash of light creeping over my face. "Where the heck have you been all day?", I snapped, letting my frustration get the worst out of me.
Silco looked extremely exhausted. He only rubbed the back of his neck over my thunders and sat down on his side of the bed. "Not now, okay?", he warned. That tone wasn't good and shouldn't be taken lightly. Over the years, he had never lost his temper with me, but I knew he was only a hair's breadth away from losing it now.
I clenched my teeth as I watched him get undressed and slip under the sheets.
He moaned as he relaxed his limbs and closed his good eye. His arms clasped behind his head. He just lay there, breathing with flared nostrils.
"Is it that bad?" I murmured, and his permanently open eye flicked over to me.
"I don't know if I want to kill Jinx or put a crown on her fucking head."
"Mind to expand further?"
He slightly shook his head. "Not now. I-" He ground his teeth. "I need to arrange my thoughts first."
I nodded slightly.
He wasn't someone to be pushed into actions, so I let him be. Getting back on my pillow, he finally turned towards me. "Are you better, love?"
I nodded against his hand that was playing with my hair. "Told you, it was just the milk."
His features were relaxed again, but I still sensed the storm behind his forehead. "Good," he murmured, pulling his hand away. "You had me worried there for a second."
He only told me the next day what had happened and that he had charged Jinx with developing a weapon using the hex crystal she had stolen.
I was shocked about the revelation to say at least, but Silco grabbed the armrests of my chair, caging me between his arms.
"Do you understand what that means?", he pressed, his ashy breath hitting my face. "If we have this weapon, we'll finally be powerful enough to make them listen to us. All those years I have been hoping for such an opportunity. The victory will finally be ours, I can almost taste it. Or have you forgotten, why we do all of this?" He waved one hand to the side, pointing at the clutter on my desk. "I was never just interested in making life better for me and my kin. I wanted a better life for all of Zaun. And this weapon will finally bring us into the position to make the council listen to us. Do you remember? The violence necessary to force change?" His breath came in small huffs after his speech, and I watched him with eyes wide open.
Maybe he was right. Maybe I had forgotten what this was all about. Maybe I needed the reminder.
A wave of nausea crashed over me, and I placed a hand against my forehead. "Excuse me," I shoved him away and ran to the small bathroom next to my office. When I returned a few minutes later, my throat sour from throwing up, he sat in my place, face hard and arms crossed.
"Here we go again," he huffed, eying me carefully. "You're seeing the doctor tomorrow. I'm sick of this. You can't be ill now, not at such a crucial point in our history."
I plunged down on his lap, throwing my arms around him. "Sorry boss. I don't expect sick pay."
He hummed, annoyed, and got my hand out of his hair. "Brush your teeth, you have a meeting later."
I felt a stab through my chest as he got up with me on his arms, and he just placed me back into my chair.
Without giving me a second look, he simply left.
I was trying to convince myself that he was just stressing out and soon would make it up to me. But secretly, I was afraid he was slowly getting tired of me. And this damn nausea and trembling all the time didn't make it any better. But I was also afraid of what the doctor would say. So I also lied to Silco about seeing a doctor. I told him it was just an upset stomach due to stress and that I should kick back a little. Of course that wasn't an opportunity, so I just continued business as usual. I was throwing up almost every day, but I tried to hide it. Maybe I was blanking out the obvious, but I just didn't want to be a nuisance.
He already had enough trouble with the incident Jinx had caused.
I hadn't seen an enforcer in our house in years, as much as I saw Markus sneaking in and out of Silco's office these days. I decided to put a blind spot over this matter and just stuck to my business. Of course, I noticed how tense everyone around me was. I saw very few of Jinx, and Silco never got old about saying that she was working on her breakthrough with the hex crystal.
Honestly, I didn't think she could do it, but when I suggested getting Singed involved with the development as well, Silco snapped at me.
He trusted his daughter blindly.
And apparently she was just as brilliant as he thought.
No matter what happened around us, Silco kept it a secret from me.
But I wasn't an idiot, and I heard about the incidents with the water tower and with Sevika. I noticed she was running around without her robotic arm for a few days. But one little, but important detail kept hidden from me until I was about to deliver some notes to Silco once again.
I wasn't even expecting him to be at his office, but as I wanted to push the handle, I heard muffled voices from within.
Jinx!
I couldn't resist eavesdropping, and the revelation made me treble. What did she mean, Vi was still alive?
As I heard her heavy boots on the wooden planks, I quickly hurried to the middle of the platform, pretending I just came upstairs.
She didn't look at me, even when I called out for her.
I gritted my teeth and furiously stepped into Silco's office.
He had his face in his hands.
"Why the hell did you lie about Violet? You should have told me," I instantly confronted him, my notes completely forgotten.
"How do you know, now?", he groaned, swaying his chair away from me and lighting a cigar. As I didn't answer, he hummed, frustrated. "I knew I needed thicker doors." He didn't say anything.
I only saw the smoke curl towards the ceiling. "You should have told me," I insisted stepping closer to his desk.
"I only found out about it a few days ago myself. Markus lief to me about it. He promised me she was out of the picture for good."
I gasped at the implication. "You didn't send him to kill her back in the day, did you?"
His silence was answer enough. "Silco!", I cried. "She's Jinx's sister! She's also Felicia's daughter. What the hell is wrong with you? She was just a child!"
He turned to face me, his eyes hard and merciless. "She is a threat. She is Vander's daughter through and through. I wanted her out of the picture so that Jinx could finally calm down. Finally forget."
"And you think having her dead would do that?", I asked and slammed my hands on his desk. "She's her sister. Have you forgotten about Felicia and Vander just because they're dead? Of course not!" I panted over my range and tried to ignore the lingering dizziness.
Silco shot up from his chair, mimicking my gesture, and looked me closely into the eyes. "It almost worked. If that damn nosy enforcer hadn't set her free." His knuckles turned white as he clawed his hair.
I noticed the slight tremor in his hands as he stood straight. "I will handle this. If I want anything done the right way, I have to do it on my own, as it seems."
"Silco," I tried softer. "Now that she knows, you can't just separate them anymore. Jinx is an adult. Let her decide what to do."
"No!", he hammered a fist on his desk. "I can't have her distracted by this now. She needs to finish this weapon. And that insufferable brat is guided by that enforcer girl. They are after the crystal. They are a threat to our cause, and threats have to be eliminated."
The floor under my feet started spinning. "But it's Vi, Silco." My breath jittered as the whole room started tumbling. I heard my name being whispered through a long tunnel before everything went blank.

Act III
Chapter II
Part 4/8
I hadn't been feeling well all day, and as I walked over the gallery, music already hammering from downstairs, I pressed my documents against my body to steady the tremor. As I approached Silco's office, the door suddenly flew open and almost hit me.
Jinx stormed out of the room, slammed her shoulder into mine, and just stormed on.
"Careful, kiddo!", I shouted past her and slipped into the office, where I found Silco in deep thoughts. "What was that?", I asked, placing the documents on his desk. I leaned against the heavy furniture, not able to stand straight on my own.
Silco didn't look at me, only took the papers I brought him and roamed them carelessly. "Jinx messed up big this time," he managed through gritted teeth, and I grimaced. "I told Sevika to keep a close eye on her. I'm just as fed up with her as I am with Jinx." He told me what had happened, and I listened carefully.
I lurked around the desk and found a comfortable position in Silco's lap. "I told you she was too unstable to send her to the field. She's smart, give her something to do around here. She can plan coups, but she shouldn't be involved." I took the papers out of his hands to make him listen to me. "Jinx still needs your guidance, and if you don't do well on her now, she'll never grow out of it."
"Everyone always thinks, they can give me smart advices," Silco snarled and shoved me off his lap. "Excuse me, love, but I've got work to do. I need to somehow satisfy my business partners, who now miss out on a delivery of Shimmer."
I huffed, annoyed. "Fine. I'll leave. If you want to apologize, I'm at my office." I was trying to act content and strutted out, but after two steps, a wave of nausea washed over my whole body and I sank to my knees.
It only took Silco a second to be at my side. "What's wrong, dove?" His voice was higher than usual.
I broke in a cold sweat, and my stomach curdled. I tried to hold it in, but a second later, I was throwing up on the wooden planks.
Silco gave away a sharp shriek, but then he gently placed a hand on my back and pushed my hair back with the other. "Hey, you won't be getting sick on me now, will you?", he asked gently and brushed my hair back even after the throwing up ended.
I panted and shivered and leaned against his crouched-down figure. "I think the milk wasn't all well anymore. I should throw the package out. But first, let me clean up that mess."
Silco sucked his teeth repeatedly. "No, you go rest now. And I'll handle this, okay? You're white as a wall. And food poisoning isn't fun." He helped me get back on my feet, and his hands brushed through my hair to put it back in place. Then he kissed my forehead. "I don't take no for an answer, you hear that?"
I nodded weakly, but still felt bad for letting him handle my mess, when he was clearly already busy enough with all the other problems around him. I got out of my high heels and tiptoed upstairs to get to bed.
By the time night had fallen and Silco joined me, I was still feeling quite under the weather.
Having spent most of the day between sleep and being awake, my bloodstream was really out of the usual, and I was still sick. Though I hadn't eaten since breakfast, I also wasn't hungry.
"I brought you another bottle of water," Silco murmured, putting the bottle on my nightstand. He placed his hand against my forehead, his fingers cool against my damp skin. "I'm getting the doctor tomorrow. You're looking horrible."
I groaned at his remark. "I'll be fine. Gimme the night of rest, and I'll be as good as new. Don't worry about me."
His jaw tightened, and he watched me long and throughout. "If it's not getting better in three days, I'll call the doc." Then he slipped into his side for the bed.
I rolled over to place my head on his chest. Playing with the gray hair on his chest kind of calmed me down.
He placed a hand on the back of my head, but didn't move it. And soon he was snoring beneath me. That must have really been an exhausting day for him.

Act III
Chapter II
Part 3/8
Two more of my birthdays came and went, and our life together didn't change much.
Jinx grew into a beautiful young woman.
I tried my best to convince her to cut her hair at least a little, as it would soon touch the ground, but she simply refused.
Silco let her have it her way, no matter what.
One day she was rummaging around our closet and pulled out a box with old and worn-out stuff, mostly from Silco and decided to just keep it. "Look at that! They fit like a - glove!" She cracked at her own joke as she extended her arms, her hands in Silco's old working gloves. "You used to have great taste, old man," she beamed, pulling out stubbed belts and tight-fitting pants.
I could just laugh at the sight of it. There were clothes, I hadn't even seen Silco in, and he was still wearing those belts when I first met him. "Look at this, you've been really quite the rebel in your youth, weren't you?", I hummed to his ear after Jinx had waltzed off to her "secret" hideout to make a new outfit out of the old stuff.
"I'm still a rebel, dove," he grumbled, swaying slightly in his chair.
"Ah, I would die to see you in this mesh top," I sing-sang dramatically and let me fall on his desk, sending some papers around me flying.
"You can be just as childish as Jinx, kid."
I twitched at my old nickname from his mouth. "You haven't called me like that in a while," I remarked, leaning in closer so that our noses almost touched.
"You haven't acted like it in a while," he deadpanned and stole a kiss. "What do you say if we call it a day for now and head upstairs? I think you could use some correction."
"Oh, you think I've been a bad girl?", I responded coyly.
"The baddest of them all, and that's what I love about you."

Act III
Chapter II
Part 2/8
As I expected, this night changed my whole life, and at first I didn't know how I liked that.
It soon went around that I was the woman at Silco's side. And such rumors didn't just come with favors. Many believed I was doing it for money, for the status or for the nice clothes. Secretly, they looked down on me more than before. Called me Silco's pet, and worse, behind our backs,
My co-workers suddenly stopped their conversations when I entered the room.
It seemed like I had no friend in the world left, except for Alex, who had been my closest alley, though all the years I knew them. They didn't like my decision to get back with Silco, but they would never judge me for it. They knew my heart. And again they threatened that their wrath would be unstoppable should he dare to hurt me again.
I soon didn't help at the bar anymore, instead, I hired a new bartender, Thieram. He did a fabulous job and soon degraded Kev to second in line, much to the latter's dismay, of course.
But I couldn't let affection or old bonds let my estimation get clouded. And Thieram just was the better choice.
Over the time, Silco entrusted me with all his financial matters, even the ones I tried to avoid at first.
But money spoils the character, and so I soon found myself entangled into Silco's Shimmer-business as well.
"I think we've got a problem here, Naveed," I said, leaning back in my swivel chair, swaying softly from side to side and playing nonchalantly with my pen. "I can recalculate this as much as I want, your calculation doesn't add up." I got out of the chair, walking over to the stout figure of Naveed, one of our busiest traffickers. My heels clicked on the wooden floor boards as I towered over his sitting frame.
"Come on, Kid. You know how this goes, sometimes you have to give stuff away for free. Canvassing. Our client base is already pretty large, it's not as easy to expand the business as it used to be."
What had been Silco's nickname for me had turned into something like my underworld alias, with almost all of our business partners calling me like that. Only Silco had refrained from using it on me. Not that I had been particularly fond of the nickname in the first place. On the contrary, when we were first dating, the name used to frustrate me, as it made me painfully aware of what I was compared to him. These days I didn't care much how people called me, as long as they didn't reduce me to my entanglement with Silco.
I rested my hands on my hips, clicking my tongue in annoyance. "This discrepancy can't be explained by "giving stuff for free". I get it; you gotta let people get the taste. But unfortunately, you didn't bring us that many new clients in the last quarter."
Naveed broke a sweat and leaned back in his chair.
I stepped even closer, so that I was already between his spread legs. "So, if you can't explain things to me, maybe I have to find an explanation myself." I placed the tip of my pen against his carotid and clicked it once. "First. You really are that stupid at math, and I can't tolerate that. I'd have to replace you with somebody smarter. Second." I clicked my pen twice. "You are your own best customer, and sniff that stuff yourself. I couldn't allow that either, 'cause sooner or later point one will also set in. And as mentioned before, I couldn't accept that." I clicked my pen trice and pulled it even harder against Naveed's throat. "Or third. You're trying to screw with me. And nobody screws with me or Silco. You know that, Naveed."
He gulped, his head bending as far away from me as possible. I knew he was partly just afraid of me, because I was under Silco's protection, but I was also known to make my threats true.
I took my pen away, straightened my back and swayed to my seat. Placing my pen on the table, I glowered at him. "You have three days to clean up your wallet and bring me the rest of my money. Or next time, my little friend over here will be on my pen's place." I dragged out a switchblade knife from my stationery and pushed it open.
Naveed didn't dare to reply. He only got up from his chair and tumbled out of my office.
I hated talking to people like that, but I couldn't show a moment of mercy, or mine and Silco's reputation would suffer. Lighting a cigarette, I took a few calming drags before relaxing against the backrest of my chair. I was just trying to get back to work when the door was opened again, and I looked into Silco's calm face.
"Having a long day, love?"
I gritted my teeth. "We're surrounded by jerks."
He chuckled lightly. "Why don't you call it a day? I mean, it's not any day."
I sighed at the thought about it. No, it was my freaking 30th birthday.
"Come on, dear. I'll take you for dinner, and when we're back, Jinx has prepared a little surprise for you. Go, refresh yourself, I'll have the car ready in 30 minutes."
I smiled at him, thankful for the distraction.
"Wear something thrilling," he breathed as I walked past him out of my office.
I knew exactly what I would put on. My purple cocktail dress had just returned from the dry cleaner's. I put my hair in an up-do, put in my favorite hoops, and put on a lipstick in Silco's favorite shade of red. I deliberately abstained from wearing a necklace, as I expected to get a new dangler for my birthday. A tad of my favorite perfume (it hadn't chanced since my youth), a pair of peep toes, and my cashmere coat rounded out my outfit, and after only 20 minutes I was good to go.
As I stepped down the stairs, to "The Last Drop", which since then had been remodeled into a bursting nightclub, he already waited for me in his booth.
"Now, that's what I was talking about," he greeted and placed a kiss on my cheek to not smudge my lipstick yet. He took me to the best place on our side of the bridge, and we both ordered our favorite curses.
"I'd die to see you stomp over Naveed like that," he smiled as I told him about my unpleasant encounter.
"I still feel like an imposter sometimes," I admitted, and took a sip of red wine.
Silco had been discontented with my choice of drink.
We had suspected I might be pregnant a few days ago, but my recent check-up had come out disappointing again. In the last years, we never had really tried to have a child, but we also weren't preventing it.
A child of our own would have completed our little family.
Even if Silco didn't seem to miss a biological child much, for me things were a little more difficult.
My bond with Jinx never got over that of a confidant. While she loved Silco with all her heart, and he adored her equally, there never was space for me in this relationship. And while she lovingly called Silco her dad, she only addressed me by my first name.
Of course, I still loved her dearly and tried to convince myself, that she was enough for us. Maybe it was the lack of age difference that never made Jinx as attached to me as she was to Silco. Maybe I was more like an odd cousin or like - an older sister. And Jinx definitely had an issue with elder siblings.
"Are you sure we shouldn't go see the doc and get his advice on this problem?", Silco picked up a conversation I had abandoned the day of my check-up.
"What problem, dear? So what if I don't have a child of my own? A kid wouldn't fit into our lives anyway. Think about it. Would you get up late at night to change some diapers?"
His lips were a thin line. He barely talked about what he really wanted, but when I came for him with my suspicion, he had been thrilled by the idea. "I'm just suggesting that there are ways to deal with these kinds of problems today. The Pilties are doing it all the time."
"But we aren't Pilties," I shot back, taking another sip of my drink. "If it happens, it happens. If it doesn't, it doesn't. And either way, I'll be fine."
He grabbed my hand over the table. "Of course, I'll be fine too. However you decide. I already have more than I ever expected. You, Jinx, our business. I have everything a happy man needs. But I would want someone for you too. Someone who would be there while I was already long gone."
I took my hand out of his. "Don't you dare talk about something like that. We both still got enough time before any of us kicks the bucket." I looked into his pained face.
He tried to cover up the marks on his face, but I knew that the damage was getting worse, even after all those years. He thought I didn't notice when he got out of bed at night, paced through the bedroom, and then still got downstairs to do whatever. Probably Shimmer. There were few days that he actually woke up next to me, most days he woke me up at the same time in the morning, got back to bed with me for a few minutes of quality time, and then both of us started our days.
Sometimes we didn't see each other for twelve or 16 hours, but at the end of the day we both returned to our bedroom, our sanctuary, where we could only be man and woman without all the responsibilities and threats surrounding us.
"What's with those gloomy thoughts, love?", I tried to beam. "It's my birthday, we should be celebrating!" I raised my glass to cheer him. "And we now know each other for twelve years!"
He smiled and touched my glass with his. "And you're still as gorgeous as you used to be - no, you're even more stunning."
I batted my eyes at the praise. "My, you're so sweet."
Silco smiled at me, and our meal was served.
We ate in relative quiet, only chatting about our food.
When the plates were removed, Silco got up from his chair, walked around the table, and really put my necklace with a new ornament on it around my neck. "The color made me think of your eyes," he explained quietly.
I looked at the stone, which was about the size of a coin, and got lost in the way the light reflected in the cut. "Aw, Silco, you shouldn't have. It's beautiful."
"Just the best for my queen," he remarked and got back to his place. His eyes were fixed on the gem between my breasts. He licked his lips as if seeing something tasty and hummed lowly. "I can't wait to rip this dress off of you later and smudge that neat little lipstick."
I let my foot run up his shin. "Please don't destroy it, it's my favorite."
"I'll give my very best." He took a long sip of his drink. "But first we have to go through Jinx's surprise for you, anyway."
I chuckled. "Do you know what she prepared this time?"
Silco pretended his lips were a zipper. "My lips are sealed."
"Daw, you're no fun," I moaned, and he smirked at me. I loved to see the mischief return to his face.
He didn't have many opportunities to let that side show, and I was convinced only me and Jinx ever got a taste of it anymore.
I know how exhausting it was to always keep a straight face and to never let emotions bubble to the surface. It was probably what I liked least about our life.
After finishing our dinner, we instantly rode back home, and Jinx was already waiting excitedly for our return.
She roamed the pavement in front of "The Last Drop", as the car parked besides her. "Happy Birthday!", she beamed as I got out of the backseat.
I laughed at her boisterous caress.
"Come, hurry up! We need to go to the roof!" She grabbed my hand excitedly. "You too, Dad!" She also grabbed Silco's arm and dragged us to the backside of the building and up the exit stairs.
I had problems keeping up with her pace, but Silco was straight up panting, as we reached the rooftop terrace, and some strands had strayed out of his accurate hairdo. "We're not getting any younger, are we?", I teased as I brushed them back in place. I remembered vividly when his fast steps had left me breathless.
"Tadaaa!", Jinx announced and presented a daring construction of cables, fuses and boxes. She ignited a switch, and the fuse started burning.
Seconds later, a fountain of sparkles crackled out of a pylon, and yet a few seconds later the boxes started spilling fireworks into the night sky.
We stood for several minutes and watched in awe.
When the last sparkle had burned out, I hugged Jinx in a tight embrace. "That was beautiful, kiddo." I kissed her forehead. "Did you do this all on your own?"
She gave me a crooked smile. "Well, Dad helped with the purchase."
"Don't underestimate your talents, Jinx."
"My, you'll be a great pyrotechnician, when you're grown up," I gushed. Though, I had to realize that Jinx was almost grown up already.
She had come a long way since Silco took her in. She was already almost as tall as me. "Yeah, I sure will, and then I'll blow these bastards up, that dare to come in my way."
"Jinx," I instantly scolded, but Silco shut me up with a stern glance.
He placed his arm around her slim shoulders and squeezed her against his rips. "I'm sure you and your skills will soon be very useful for me and our cause. Maybe it's really time to entrust you with some meaningful tasks."
"Silco!" I was indignant.
But they both decided to ignore me.
Then Silco sent Jinx to her room. "We'll talk about this some other time, okay?"
Jinx agreed, and the way her blue eyes glowered at me, brought goosebumps to my arms.
I turned away from them, watching over the city and taking deep breaths. Up here, the air wasn't quite as thick.
"It's time she gets involved with the business," Silco decided when he was sure that Jinx wasn't within earshot anymore. "At her age, I had already been working in the mines for two years."
"She's still a child!", I argued back.
"No, she's not." Silco ran a hand through his salt and pepper hair. "She acts like one, yes. But she needs to grow up. I hope by giving her a task, she'll grow into it."
I placed my hand on his chest, adjusting the rim of his vest. "Considering your past, you should let her be a child as long as possible. Don't push her into anything she's not."
"But she's my heir. She has to finally learn what her place is in this city. Or at least, what it should be."
I didn't talk back. I didn't agree with Silco's view, but Jinx was mainly his concern. I wouldn't challenge him over her upbringing. "I just hope you know what you're doing. You feel it too, the turmoil within her, don't you?"
Silco avoided my gaze. "She's fine, love. She's just a little different."
I put my mouth into a thin line.
"Come," he finally sighed and took my hand. "Let's get you out of this uncomfortable outfit."

Act III
Chapter II
Part 1/8
As I ran down the stairs, I avoided being seen by anybody else, but on my way out of the backdoor, I ran into Mimi.
"Oh my," she gasped, looking at my tear-stained face. She places both hands on my arms. "I heard you cry, Hun. What did he do to you?"
I avoided her worried gaze. "Nothing," I huffed. "I only saw a ghost from my past."
Mimi clicked her tongue. "Go home, Hun. Get some rest. Kev and I can handle this."
"It's fine, it really is. I just... Gimme 20 minutes outside. I need to cool down a little."
Mimi looked at me worried and still let me pass.
So I headed out the back door to get between the containers. I fumbled between the boles of a paneling and dragged out a hidden packet of cigarettes. Lighting one with shaking hands and taking a deep breath, I instantly felt my body relax. Yes, I had become a stress smoker over the last years. But my hidden packet sometimes lasted over a month. This day, though, I took two in a row. As I stepped the second one out, I felt that the tremor in my body had become better. I took a few more deep breaths before stepping back into the bar. I took the shift dutifully.
And the next one as well, and the next, and so on.
I dreaded going upstairs on Thursdays to give my report. I tried to see as little as possible of Silco.
He didn't say more than needed, I just felt his lingering gaze on me once in a while. But he didn't start anything funny. When he walked past me at the bar and didn't even bat an eye at me, my heart arched unreasonably.
I had refused him, this time for good. I shouldn't feel this way. I shouldn't peek at the booth he shared with his thugs. I shouldn't have felt the nagging jealousy when that gorgeous, busty beauty that always attended their meetings placed a hand on his knee and took a drag of his cigar. Yet here I was, wanting to spit in her drink while reaching them over from Kev to Mimi's tray. "Can't you just pour it into her lap?", I nagged as the mysterious beauty laughed way too hard over Silco's bad sense of humor.
Mimi gave me a pitiful sigh, took the tray and carried it over.
"I need some fresh air," I announced, and Kev only huffed at me. Before I could leave through the back door, a glimpse of blue hair caught my attention.
Powder was sitting on the stairs.
So instead of having another rage-smoke outside, I stepped upstairs and sat beside her. "Hey kiddo, what's with the long face?"
"I'm bored," she whined, head resting on her fists. "Silco's been busy all day, and Sevika isn't at home either. It's so boring alone."
I placed a hand on her back. "I know. But it's already late, and this really isn't a place for you at such a time." I looked over the crowd and caught somebody in a shady booth inhaling Shimmer from a cartridge.
"I used to have somebody to play with all the time."
I pressed her against me, and Powder's head relaxed at my chest. Drawing circles on her back, I tried to give her the comfort a little girl like her needed.
She whispered my name and searched my eyes. "Are you still friends with Silco?"
I sighed heavily. "No, I don't think so."
She bit her lower lip. "I overheard your fight a few weeks ago."
I felt my cheeks grow hot. "Did you, huh? Well, I guess everybody in here heard that."
"He doesn't mean it, you know?"
I raised an eyebrow at her.
"He is a little dense sometimes," she whispered at me, and we both chuckled.
"You know, maybe you should go back to bed, Powder. It's really late, and I don't think Silco would want you to run around the bar, risking his precious business meeting."
"But it's so loud," she complained.
"I thought you liked music."
"I do, but not this one."
"Come on, kiddo. I'll get you back into your room, and then, I promise, I'll change the playlist for you, okay?"
She seemed to contemplate it, but then nodded. "Okay fine. But I also what a goodnight story."
I sighed heavily. "Come on, you're a big girl already. You don't need that anymore. I don't even know if I know a good story."
"You sure do. But you're right. I don't need the story, but I want it. What else should I dream about when my day has been that boring!"
I chuckled at her dramatic performance. As I got up, I noticed that Silco had seen us. Ignoring his stare, I took Powder's hand and brought her to the room. I really didn't know what story to tell her. But then I remembered a story my brothers had loved about Beauty and the Beast.
As I just told about the Beauty and the Beast sharing a wonderful dance in the empty ballroom together, the door to Powder's room opened with a creak.
Silco's head peeked into the room, but I placed a finger in my lips as Powder was already dozed off. "And while they danced, the Beauty noticed that the Beast was a fantastic guy, deep inside. She was able to look over his impulsive nature and the ugliness the witch had given him, falling for the person behind the facade. And so the curse was lifted, and the Beast transformed back into a prince. The Beauty and the Prince then got married, and they lived happily ever after." I tucked the edge of Powder's blanket firmly against her body and got up.
She was soundly asleep.
I looked at Silco and my heart arched at the softness of his features in the darkness of the room.
"The bedtime stories I tell her are a little more..." he pondered over the right expression, his tone unusually cheerful. "... gruesome."
I rolled my eyes. "I expected nothing else of you." I pressed against him as I slipped out the door, holding my breath to not get captivated in his magical cloud anymore.
"Was that a metaphor for me? The Beast, I mean."
I quirked an eyebrow at him. "It's an old fairy tail. It's not all about you, Silco." I walked on, giving him a cold shoulder, but with two steps, he caught up with me and grabbed my arm. "Ouch, you are hurting me!", I complained as he turned me to face him.
"I'm sick of you playing hot and cold with me," he pressed through gritted teeth, careful not to be too loud, so that Powder wouldn't wake up again.
I sucked my teeth. "Won't your lady friend be worried if you stay gone for too long?"
"What, Margot?" He shuddered. "You think I've sunken that low?"
I relaxed a little in his still iron grip.
"Oh," he finally piped, a cheeky glimmer in his eyes. "You're jealous." He licked his lips and gave me a smirk.
"Bullshit," I grumbled and looked away from his remarkable features.
A slower song started, and his hand released the grip around my wrist to glide into my hand. His other hand got comfortable on my back, and he started to slowly sway from side to side. "You're right, being jealous would be bullshit. No woman in this bar compares to you."
I placed my hand on his shoulder and let his body move mine over the gallery. And as we swayed to the music, I understood what the Beauty saw in the Beast.
The kiss we shared tasted of liquor and a quiet promise. A promise long buried in my heart but never forgotten.
He twirled me around to the grand finale of the song and dipped me to steal another quick kiss.
"You're drunk," I chuckled, my head spinning from all the changes of posture.
He never danced like this when sober. "Maybe a little bit," he admitted and smiled at me.
I untangled our limbs and stood straight. "I think I should go down again. The other's will wonder where I left."
An annoyed wrinkle appeared around Silco's mouth. "No," he deadpanned. "I've got an important task for you."
I giggled as he went for my neck, leaving wet, quick kisses all over it. "I can't ignore my boss's order."
"Hmm, I like the ring to that," he hummed to my ear, making my skin buzz. As he grabbed my hand and dragged me into his office, I caught the intense gaze of that Margot.
Now it was me who was triumphant. Me, the ordinary girl. I felt her anger burning through the room, but that only made me feel more giddy.
As the office door shut behind us, he instantly caged me between his arms. The dim green glimmer from the street through the window illuminated his silhouette. His Shimmer-enhanced eye gleamed in the dark, giving me an idea of how he roamed my face. "Will you be mine now, at long last?", he whispered against my lips.
As I quickly nodded, he wandered over to my ear.
"Say it."
"Yes, Silco, I'll be yours - forever."
His whole body collapsed into mine.
My hands were roaming his back, his hands my sides, while he devoured me alive.
"I could take you right here against the door," he panted to my ear.
"Be my guest," I replied, but he shook his head slightly.
"No, I'll make up for what we've missed out on."
I raised an eyebrow at him when he pulled away from me, took my hand and made me take the steps to the highest floor of the building, where his bedroom was.
He walked over to the nightstand and clicked the light on that then illuminated the room in long, soft shadows.
I watched carefully as he popped out the cuff links, threw them in a small chest, and neatly rolled the sleeves of his shirt up. Looking over the wiry muscles on his lower arms, I bit my lip.
His hands, well manicured as ever, had always driven me crazy, and I couldn't wait for those long fingers inside me.
I watched him carefully take off his tie and place it over one of the bed posts.
"I feel like a stripper if you watch me like that, dear," he remarked, looking at me cheekily.
"Oh, I wouldn't mind the show," I grinned, picking pointedly at my short fingernails.
He hummed disapprovingly and waved me over. Fumbling with the bow on my blouse, he told me that he'd have to get me out of his suffocating, sweaty piece of linen first.
I laughed and let him have it his way.
He got me undressed painfully slowly, leaving traces of his chilly fingertips on my hot skin. He worshiped each piece of my body like I was some long-lost treasure that he finally had found.
It was lovely taking things slowly for a change. Though, the urgency with which I wanted him on my body was quickly interpreted as impatience again.
So Silco worked even slower on me, spending minutes tending to one spot before moving to the next. He truly made up for what we had missed. As the night dragged on, he gave me everything that I wanted and more.
Finally, exhaustion and tiredness made us crash into the pillows.
Each of my limbs was befallen by a satisfied heaviness, my head too clouded to clearly grasp the situation. I knew the night would change my whole life, but for now I tried to push the thought about it as far away as possible.
As he lit himself a smoke, I reached for it and took it out from between his lips.
"Should I be jealous, you're so well-trained or flattered?", I hummed between two drags.
Taking the cigarette away from me again, he raised an eyebrow at me. "Don't be too curious, kid." He was right.
Some things were better left unsaid.
We passed the butt back and forth until the drowsiness consumed our bodies.

Act III
Chapter II

Plus, Arcane has a tradition of rushing endings just to stay within nine episodes, right? ;) Also, happy Valentine's Day! Comments would be appreciated!

Act III
Chapter II
