PT 2: Mermaid concept + my overall thought process

⚠️extreme yapping⚠️

My plan wasn’t to feature literal mermaids. Originally I was just going to create a story about a young girl who feels trapped in her conservative suburban life and wishes she was a mermaid more than anything. Others treat her like she’s crazy but she finds solace in her best friend who understands her. I wanted to potray more of a girl cosplaying as a mermaid in a gaudy, almost drag queen kind of way. (Think Chappell Roan in the Casual MV or Cher in the film Mermaids)

Instead, I created an allegorical story about a LITERAL mermaid who is trapped in a suburban environment isolated from water. She feels pressure to suppress her identity in order to survive. Idk which ones better but that’s a bit of my thought process.

I went back in forth on the 1970s as a setting but I felt that since it was already an unconventional story, adding a specific time period isn’t really a big deal. Also I just have such love for the 1970s as a decade. I imagine that the girls were obsessed with the glamour of the disco era.

I wrestled with the race of the characters because as a WOC I love representation in media. However, I felt that the MCs were most naturally white in my mind. I couldn’t in good creative faith continue the story if I wasn’t sold on that one specific aspect. All that being said I do believe diversity in art is important especially at a time like this so… yeah.

Personal intro + inspiration behind Tangerine

Now that that’s out of the way! I got the idea for the name Tangerine from a Taylor swift song (I’m not a swiftie). Nevertheless I heard the song Slut! one day and was inspired by lyrics such as “flamingo pink, sunrise boulevard” and “aquamarine, moonlit swimming pool, what if all I need is you?” AND ESPECIALLY “half asleep, taking your time in the tangerine neon lights” These lyrics presented me with a certain color scheme that I felt was unique and in line with the themes of the narrative.

Tangerine Color Palette

The most important feature of Tangerine is the color palette. Deena’s color is Coral. Rocky’s color is Teal. When they are clashing, the environment is Coral with Teal accents. When they are in harmony (rarely), it creates a soft lavender. An example of this is in the scene where Rocky discovers Deena is a mermaid. Thus far Deena’s whole house has been Coral because it’s her living space. The bathroom is Coral with heavy Teal accents because it’s the place where Rocky discovers Deena’s secret and now they’re feeling awkward and resentful towards eachother. Idk how much sense that makes but essentially the characters are clashing so their colors are together but not blended.

TANGERINE PLOT EXPLAINED 💕⚠️

Every summer, family friends Deena and Rocky reunite in the small suburbs of Indiana. In the summer of 1974, everything changes when Rocky discovers a terrible secret about Deena. SHES A MERMAID. As the girls work together to protect Deena’s secret, they grow closer along the way and discover more about themselves and each other.
