The One That Got Away
68 posts
Life in the advertising industry is full of ones that got away: The idea that didn’t make it. The insight that never truly came to life. The work that could have finally proven how brilliant you are – but that you just couldn’t crack. This February, we’re giving you the chance to tell the world about your one that got away, and to transform that heartbreak into an opportunity. Tell us about your idea that got away by writing a “love letter” to it. Create your letter in any format – a poster, a haiku, a symphony, a GIF – and submit it here until February 12th. If your tale of loss truly touches our hearts, you could be one of TBWA\Toronto’s Young Gunns this summer. Thank you to all who submitted their tales of loss. See the results of The One That Got Away here.

We’re still dewy-eyed over all the submissions we received.  But two among them really melted our hearts.
Congratulations to our two newest Young Gunns, Caitlin and Robbie!

Happy Valentine’s Day to all our participants. May you all go on to find the ideas that make your portfolios whole again.
We think we’ve found the one broken heart that we can mend. Now to see if they feel the same way about us.
The big announcement is coming soon!

Memories of the One That Got Away
To,
The Special You.
Memories are those parts of my life I never wanted because when you lose something, it becomes memory and I don't wanted to lose anything, especially You.
Even today my heart miss the beat when I hear your name from someone. Love is still there in my heart. Feelings are those unspoken words of my life I can't share with anyone. Every day in front of god I wish for a moment to live with you, to see you, to speak with you, to hear something from you.
From the day when first time I saw you in, I fell in love with you. I know the word Love was not that much familiar for me at the age of ten, but there was something in your eyes which attracted me towards you and those same eyes are responsible for my present too.
The day we first time talked, the day we shared our feelings, the day we became best buddies, the day I proposed you, the day you fought with me, the day you gave me a hug and never came back, the moment when I lost everything I had, I lost my World, I lost my Life because I lost You. That day and today, everything is captured in my heart deeply inside.
Your addictive smiles, the moments we spent together, the moment I realized that I have feelings for you, the moment you went away, everything captured in my heart deeply inside. My mind always fights with my heart to stop it from recollecting those memories so that I can ignore the pain of separation, I can think of starting of a new life without you. But, I know it won’t be easy for me. Just assuming a life without you, leaves me blank.
People says you become poet if you fall in love. I don't know how they manage to find the words because whenever I think about writing something on you, I find myself lost in your memories. Only your picture comes in font of my eyes and my pen finds its way itself.
I wish I had you with me for whole life, but I think it wasn’t mean to be that way. I had to bear the pain, I had to feel lost, I had to find myself again. I hope I find that passion for my career, just to forget you, just to overcome the endless pain you have given me.
  Lost in Pain,

A Fleeting Love Affair
Like any beautifully disastrous thing in life, there was a moment.
A moment so poignant, that if you keep still, you’re able to transcend time and space.
Finding yourself drenched in the smell and song of the delusive memory, you tilt your chin back ever so slightly to listen for the words, hoping to drink in every lyric, to get drunk from them.
You shiver with excitement. You tremble with fear.
It’s a moment so powerful, so unrelentingly sensitive, that at the second following its recount, you feel the cold, steely tip of the blade piercing through your lungs.
Leaving you lifeless as winter’s breath.

Autopsy of an Idea
Autopsy of an idea.
(i)
It broke
Between jubilation and dread.
Amorphous. Incandescent.
Asking to be brought to
forever.
Sketches and scribbles -
Thoughts and insights -
Sleepless daydreams -
a holding pattern
for the inevitable realization
that was to come.
That was bound to come.
That did not come.
(ii)
Head lines
Tag lines
Body lines
Crossed out in sharp
pangs of regret.
The corporeal unwow
Factored in the misery -
Scratched heads, furrowed
brows.
Silence was all it got.
And silence was all it said.
(iii)
Erstwhile idea.
Distant memory.
Raw. Still raw?
(Always raw)
Tucked in a binder of
(vaguely remembered)
forgotten words -
Advertising is about
Letting it go.
Letting it go.

That Idea Was A Trick
Dear Idea (the one from the bathroom that one time),
You got away and I actually don’t care.   I’m pretty sure you were sleeping with all my friends anyway. Don’t deny it you low-hanging piece of fruit. I saw you leaving that guy’s portfolio that one time. And I mean, how many other portfolios were you in anyway? How many different people thought of you? Were we in love? What is love anyway?
I don’t know exactly how to say this, but I get plenty of ideas, if you know what I mean. I might even be an idea-izer, but at least I don’t get around from portfolio to portfolio. That’s just low. It’s unoriginal, it’s uninspired, and worst of all it’s unbecoming. How do you expect someone to go through life bearing that burden, the burden of being unbecoming?
I remember when we first met. You came into my head and looked great. I can’t remember what you were wearing. Maybe you were naked. Despite your outfit, I don’t remember you now. Weird, I suppose, that I’m writing to an idea I don’t remember. But what’re you going to do, that’s advertising. Carry on.
You were an unfinished thought at best.  Too esoteric? Perhaps. But I—no, no I don’t believe I even know what esoteric means. And I doubt you do either, you idea you.
You think I don’t know what you were up to? Out there gallivanting around town in your underpants. That’s just ridiculous, an idea gallivanting around town in his and/or her underpants.
Now that’s enough of whatever it is this is (it’s a letter). That’s enough. I might not even be an intern but, well, you know.
Have you seen my pants?
Busily,
Jack -----------
