Invasive plants are terrible, but these are probably the least offensive ones I know of.
This is the Siberian Squill, which was introduced to my area by the Ford family. The story I've always heard is that Clara (wife of Henry Ford) loved blue/purple flowers, and these were planted in their gardens. They are a very early bloomer. We are in zone 6 for gardening, Metro Detroit, and they typically bloom in early April. Clara got her pretty flowers, and life goes on....
Except they absolutely took over. The entire Ford estate grounds, surrounding woods, and even countless yards in Dearborn and Detroit are full of these things. For a few weeks in April every year, the land is a fairy carpet. The good news is they bloom and die back relatively quickly, so they don't outcompete most of the spring ephemera. The naturalists in the area that I have spoken to say they don't bother with removal because they die back so quickly, but they do say it's the one flower we can pick.
I think the most interesting characteristic is the blue pollen! These flowers are my sign that spring is on the way. We usually get at least one more snow on them, but warmer days are ahead!
Making meaningful pieces is the highlight of my days.
A very dear friend is a pilot, and their aircraft program was retired. They were able to get a propeller and asked us if we would refinish it. It was painted drab gray, but we knew it was wood underneath.
We got these American flag bowties from Slab Stitcher and inlaid them in the backer. The backer is a large walnut slab from a local tree that had to be cut down.
The bottom of the backer is 3 shelves that follow the sapwood gradient, each shelf has cutouts for their challenge coin collection. I added a monogram with my laser, very lightly so it's visible up close but fades as you move back. We also inset their favorite challenge coin in the middle of the prop.
This piece was meaningful, challenging, and a great way to practice different techniques. I'm so grateful for everybody who puts their trust in us!
When we make large projects, we don't really know how it's going to look until the end. Woods just all look sort of bland when they haven't been finished yet.
This is our makers mark, done via laser on the back of something we are working on.
Then this happens
[video showing a blue gloved hand finishing a piece of walnut wood with oil. On the wood is a "Eagle Works" logo done with a laser]
The oiling brings out all of the beautiful character in the wood. This is a gorgeous (and huge) piece of black walnut from a tree that had to come down in Ann Arbor. Those last few days of a project are so rewarding, when we get to really see all of the colors in the grain.
At field biology class today we stumbled across a snake mating ball. The female is the largest one. We have seen so many neat things over the years, but this is arguably one of the coolest things that I never knew existed. Nature is so cool.
I thought this little patch of moss looked like a lovely fairy carpet.
We think this is some sort of an old boat docking area, maybe even a building. Nature has been reclaiming it.
I wonder how many times this has been used to tie off a boat. This land all belonged to Henry Ford, it's interesting to think about how it was used.
My favorite bright orange fungi that I have only ever seen on this particular tree. It's been there all winter, will be interesting to watch as the weather changes.
Our crochet sets come with sizes C-H hooks, which all fit beautifully onto the hand turned purple and white handle. Also in our shop you will find additional hook sizes I,J, and K.
Making our way around the United States! (And the world too!)
I started making a map of all the places we have shipped to. It's so exciting to see it grow over time. We have shipped to 6 other countries as well, I just haven't been able to add them to the map yet.
Proud of us!
Thank you all for the continued support, it's an honor to share our art with all of you.
Learning new things as an adult can be challenging. I was an A student in my formal education because I was great at memorizing things for short amounts of time. This really doesn't translate in the real world. So, I can get super frustrated with myself when things don't stick in my brain. I counteract this by specifically learning new things that make me laugh. I invested in a small laser engraver to learn the software before I decide to invest in a big laser.
Some dear friends made their domestic partnership official this year, and this popped into my head. It took me so many duds to figure things out, but I'm so happy to make it!
I hope you can find something that brings you some joy and happiness!
On the left we have tie dye, on the right is rainbow.
On the left is purple jewels, on the right is ocean dragon.
These are ballpoint twist pens that feature a tigers eye on the top. They feel great in the hand, I polish them to an extremely high shine to feel nice and smooth.
Thank you for considering our shop! We typically ship next business day on anything currently available.
