Liu Yu — Dai Dance/Peacock Dance + Captain (CHUANG ASIA 2024 Guest Mentor Performance)

as the only liu yu stan on tumblr and a huge fan of chinese dance, i am obligated to infodump about this stage. my babygirl did so well i'm SOBBING he's BEAUTIFUL !!!!!!! (this is going to be embarrassing for future employers to find)

The Chinese folk dance Liu Yu starts off with is classified as 傣族舞 (dai zu wu), or the dance of the Dai people, a recognized ethnic minority in China. One could say that it was popularized in the mainland by Yang Liping through 孔雀舞 (kong que wu), or peacock dance. Controversies aside, Yang Liping, a classical dancer of the Bai ethnic group, is a legend in the Chinese dance sphere; just about everyone in China knows her name. Liu Yu has even mentioned wanting to collaborate with her, which doesn't surprise me, considering his track record of working with professionals within his field.

What is so special about Liu Yu performing Dai dance? The Dai people have significant connections to Southeast Asia, with about 200,000 Dai living in Thailand, where CHUANG ASIA was held. There's also a bit of wordplay behind this: the Chinese character for Dai is 傣, which is composed of 人 (ren/person) and 泰 (tai/Thai).

Now, back to Liu Yu himself. He's always been big on the whole incorporating traditional and modern culture, so this transition from folk dance into his new single, Captain, was pretty fun to see. I'm not going to analyze his dance for either section because this is going to be too long of a post, but just know that his control over his hands and fingers are part of what makes his dancing so beautiful.

This is his third time performing Captain and the first time he's doing so with a handheld microphone. A little detail; at 2:43 or so in the fancam I linked, when Liu Yu is taking back the mic from a backup dancer, all of his motions are in sync with the rhythm/beat. 连传麦都卡上点了！！It's incredibly satisfying to watch, but you can't see it in the official WeTV video. Even three years after debut and one year after disbanding, he's still getting fucked over by Tengxun's shitty camerawork and audio/video editing.

I'm going to stop here, but something really funny about CHUANG ASIA (C24) is that it kind of flopped in China. It was more international than CHUANG 2021 (C21) could ever wish to be, but it just wasn't as interesting. If I remember correctly, the top post in the C24 Weibo super topic consisted of a bunch of C21 fans arguing and talking shit like the good old days. The resou ("hot topics", which are like Twitter trends but are mostly bought by companies and could be manipulated with enough money) right now are only Ouyang Didi's fans and antis fighting each other and Chinese netizens being smug about another Chinese center.

I might do a longer analysis on the Chinese vs. Western Produce Camp, especially how differently they perceive Liu Yu, but that's another post. Just know that not one, not two, not three or four or five, but FOURTEEN of CHUANG ASIA's trending terms across the internet are about Liu Yu, the most popular being his name:

chinese dance dramas (舞剧) are so underrated as a whole but i want to point out how steady this dancer is and how good his 基本功/fundamentals are

there's a term, 留头, that describes keeping the front of your head in place as your body turns. you then immediately turn your head around (甩头), faster than your body can do a full 360. this gives off the illusion of your turns being silky smooth. it's hard to do that when you have to rotate your entire body, limbs and all, but this guy does such a good job at it.

平转/flat turn is to turn while keeping your head entirely still; to the viewers, the top of your head remains flat. his flat turns are so smooth and you can see the quick footwork he does for this

same with the 点步翻身 (aka 点翻)/side turn, his footwork is so steady and he's still 留头ing. and you can see how he does his 走位/positioning, where he moves to the center front of the stage as choreographed, while he's doing these side turns.

speaking of his footwork, yes king arch your toes!! point your feet!! i cannot for the life of me remember what that forward 控腿 + stagger move is called, probably because i'm running on four hours of sleep, but his arched feet add so much to the elegance of the motion

why do i like chinese dance so much? traditional/folk chinese dancer-turned-cpop idol liu yu made me fall in love with him in one minute fifty-something seconds during his additional round fan dance on chuang 2021 (produce camp 2021)
