Thinking about Dreamtale and how the "negative au" vs. "positive au" territories work. Like always, lots of ramblings under the read more
Like I feel when things are in balance, no au is inherently positive or negative. With resets, any timeline is capable of moments of great happiness but also great tragedy. The thing is, they're fluid and ever changing. Even if you do the genocide route, it only mucks up the happy ending. But that's just the ending, which is never permanent anyway.
I feel like the only way for an au to become truly positive or negative, even the rough and tumble aus like fells, is if you forcibly give them an ending or actively alter something so you can't "play" anymore.
Imagine Nightmare cultivating entire timelines to do this. Horror timelines could be a great example. A perminant ending to the original that spirals on so much longer than it should with EVERYONE being as miserable as possible and often doing things against their own best interest because they're reaching a breaking point. Imagine corrupting timelines, forcing more and more negative emotions into a Sans until he snaps and becomes Dust.
Hell, it could be part of the reason Nightmare is so particular with any Killers he has. Because it's such a specific thing of having his soul twisted by a player/creator, Nightmare can’t influence or force that to happen. He needs to have a tighter leash on him because he's so much harder to replace. It doesn’t matter how much he alters a timeline, a home grown Killer is impossible.
It also adds more into what "missions" can be. It's not just going in and killing a bunch of people at random. Dead people don't feel emotions, positive or negative. But remove the possibility of a happy ending? Remove just the right person so the dominos in the background don't fall or make someone snap, so they never trust the human no matter what they do, all so that a true pacifistending would be impossible no matter what you did. Maybe even somehow softlocking the human so everyone is stuck in a permanent miserable limbo no matter how often they reset to try and fix it.
And then you have Dream and his "positive aus". These are obviously the ones that get happy endings, the post pacifist where Frisk promises to never reset and everyone lives their days out on the surface in harmony. The ones where everyone is happy and healing and okay.
This can be part of why Ink helps him at first. Creators like making these happy ending aus and Nightmare, of course, would want to sow seeds of political discourse to turn the surface into hell. Dreams stops that, forcing things to turn out fine again and with Ink's help, ensure the happy aus stay on track.
But that's also where Ink and Dream clash. Dream sees a Horrortale and wants to attempt to fix it, but the thing is people love making horror aus. Maybe the first few Ink is fine with fixing up because these one were MEANT to be those softer interpretations that you see floating around. But then Dream comes across one that is truly rotten, something that's more canon compliant to the original horrortale comic, maybe even worse, and Ink stops him from doing anything. such a thing would go against what the creator wants the world to be. Sure, Nightmare is the one who got the ball rolling and sunk it deeper, but these monsters in the underground were never supposed to be saved.

Thisss omfg. I actually love to think about how characters were coded, esp universes.....
I really love to think of Dream and Nightmare coding wise being almost completely the same. In fact, to such an extent that Nightmare's code is literally copy/pasted from Dream's with only a few variables changed here and there. If you were to have a look, you'd find multiple large chunks of code with comments like "// Dream's torso" or "// Dream's left leg" etc etc etc. The only parts that would be corrected to actually say Nightmare would be things that actually differ, like personality or his eyes being purple.
With their orb forms specifically (seen below LOL) I like to think between the two of them, the only difference in their code would be a single boolean (TRUE or FALSE value) deciding whether they are made of positive or negative energy... because then it sorta has this narrative add-on where legit they could've been very very similar if it weren't for how they were treated as children by the villagers. Whole nature vs nurture thing ykyk lmao
Tumblr media
As for universes, I think it should be stated that Undertale's code is. Not the best! Fun fact, did you know all of Undertale's dialogue is one giant switch statement? For those without any programming knowledge, there are better ways to do this LOL.
But that aside, when coding an AU, I definitely think there are multiple ways to do so. I love to think the way Error actually destroys universes is that he actually is able to corrupt data... based on this bit of dialogue.
Tumblr media
When Error goes to destroy an AU, he does state that he has to inspect it a bit, before nabbing the human to prevent any resets and such... undoing his work. When he does inspect though he's subjected to however a creator has made their own world. I really love to think certain worlds are harder to destroy for him just because the code is unreadable EHAHAHA.
For example, take these two simple programs I made in about 5 minutes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Functionally, they do the same thing - take in a whole bunch of numbers given by the user and then spit out an average of all those numbers. However, where these two differ is that the first one is fucked to read - shitty variable names (pissShit, shitpiss, i hardly know her!), no spacing, no comments. Versus the much more readable second version where you can actually get an idea of what's going on. (I know the example is probably unneeded LOL but I like rambling and yapping. Sue me :P)
So there's Error, and sometimes he'll get very neat and tidy universes that are easy to read, understand, comprehend, etc etc. Hooray!! And from there he can be real slick with his destruction - maybe change a few important variables here and there and then immediately watch a world crumble into nothingness. Easy in and out job. Flawless. Sleek!
But then sometimes he'll come across this hellish AU - code completely incomprehensible. The creator decided it would be a good idea to use both the variable names "Fucked" and "fucked" and he didn't notice the capitalisation for an embarrassingly long time. Or they decided for whatever reason to write their AU in the joke programming languages Brainfuck or LOLCODE. And he'll go around crushing random bytes in a temper tantrum out of frustration only to see a single tree being deleted from existence, and then Ink decides to show up and it's all horrible and nothing goes his way ever. >:[
I also like to think he has to deal with these sorts of comments in his code... HEHAAHA (These are all from Simpsons: Hit and Run).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But yes..... ramble over.......... wah
Do u think that the way a character is coded affects how others perceive things once they're around them?
LOLE, HEAR ME OUT
what if the way u can know that Nightmare is nearby isn't even his aura, but the sheer LAG that happens? What if part of the misery comes from the fact that some people can identify these things w/ game behaviour, and they realize what is happening. Like, there are people noclipping through the walls, teleporting, and you speak something at the same time somebody answers something u said 2 minutes ago because Nightmare's code is held together by glue and prayers, and checks if there is negativity in an *immense* radius every second, yandere dev style?
I mean, how would it affect other characters? How would it affect battles? Nightmare is stated to know that there is something else outside of the multiverse, so I don't think it'd be mind boggling for him to know it's a game.
But a bunch of the other major characters have experienced realizing that things aren't real at least once. They would realize quickly. How would each of them individually react? Hell, what about the likes of Dream, which never had experience with anything like that?
AND ERROR.
OH lord, things must get impossible when Error's close to Nightmare. You try to move and you don't, and it's as if you're in a dream, and the hallways go on forever. What if AUs literally crash and restart in situations like this? I bet it'd annoy Error to no end, tbh. Man just wants to destroy an AU, but it keeps rebooting. :(
I also think Dream makes things laggy af. His radius is probably smaller, tho, so maybe it's less? I think that'd be part of why he's kinda warm.
Maybe Nightmare is not as warm because his body works like a cooler, but it could get really hot depending on situations.
Maybe he can get a hell of a lot cold if parts of his code get "innative"?

Oh my god that was possibly me with the HC HEAHAHA. (I'm not certain if somebody came up with it before me, that's entirely possibly LOL but..... Excuses to talk about random monster bio. Yippee!!!!)
When I said "Physicality" it has to do with specific human/monster biology, more specifically it relates to Alphys lines in True Lab where she states monsters don't have a lot of physicality compared to humans which is why everyone melted, etc etc etc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then compare it along with the idea that Monster food is mostly made if not entirely made of magic, considering how it gets absorbed right away (see Frisk healing immediately upon consumption) and how it doesn't exit the body through waste.
The way this relates back to Horrortale is I thought it would be a cool when a Monster goes without food for a long while, the body will have to compensate by finding other ways to keep itself together due to lack of magic. I.e. Physicality. And Monsters keep growing the longer they are starved. (Physicality and magic aren't necessarily contrasting forces, it just so happens that human have lots of physicality vs little magic and monsters vice versa, but I still like it as a substitute.)
This also came out of me misremembering how big the Horrortale monsters were??? HEHAHA. In my head it's not just Horror who's bigger than the others, but just the other Horrortale monsters in general are huge... Mostly because of the fangame that came out when Horrortale just started.
Tumblr media
To be honest I remembered Papyrus being wayyyyy bigger than he is in this frame (and to be fair, his head is literally going off the screen) but now looking at it I can tell it's legit just Aliza being. Normal human child height and reaching Papyrus' waist lol. But! Erm! Lalalalala (covering ears) Lalalalalala
The thing I like about this theory is that I think it's much harder to get rid of physical matter than magic for monsters... Horror can eat as much magic as he wants to now but can never go back to his original size as a normal, classic Sans. Probably that same thing Anó mentioned with how your body will cling onto nutrients to prepare for another "starvation period", his body would probably be reluctant to even get rid of the extra physicality keeping him together despite magic being reintroduced.
TL;DR: Monster bodies compensate being starved for magic by literally gaining physical substance to hold themselves together.... Which means all of the mosnters in Horrortale are Like That, not just Horror lol
I don't remember who said it, but someone said that the reason they saw Horror as bigger is because without magic food, the monsters in his AU became more physical and I think it's cool
I like your depiction too, he's a short king ✨️
I’m sorry to say I’m not sure what “physical” means in this context, like physical activity? Or their bodies changing from magic based to actual fully physical characteristics?
Regardless, I think it’s a really cool headcanon, but it also still doesn’t make sense to me? In fact, it reiterates my point that famine is going to destroy his health, cause Horror is still in need to sustain himself, so if he doesn’t eat, he’ll lose both weight and mass, and by extension, his growth is going to suffer immensely
Food is extremely essential for a healthy growth, regardless of anything else
The only thing I can see making sense is if he becomes a giant after joining Nightmare and finally having a food supply to feed himself from that he actively eats from
Know how when you don’t eat for a while but then eat again, your body stores it as fat cause it assumes you’ll starve again? And by extension, you gain weight way easily?
The same thing happens with Horror and he grows significantly cause it’s his body’s way to keep as much energy and nutrients as possible from the food he eats cause it assumes he’ll starve again, a survival mechanism by his own body
That genuinely is the only explanation that would make sense to me hcchhchc
(And thank you!!!)
