Neo - Atlas Design Critique. 

No redesign as I said prior- allergies- but I did make this Neo sketch a bit ago before the sick mess I became and I had enough energy to color and type up a critique. Will I ever make a Neo Redesign? Yes it’s on the list with a Blake Atlas Redesign too. Along with a Blake & Yang Mistral Redesign as the prior redesigns I did for them make me wanna die, those drawings are so bad, please focus your attention on the critique rather than the redesigns for them until I FIX it.

RWBY Archives

Alright! Let’s see what they wanted to do for the fan favorite of the time- well current time; Neo! I mean people demanded for her return so certainly CRWBY must’ve made her look stunning which they did for the wrong target audience… the people who enjoy fanservice and if it wasn’t it certainly came across as it.

All the archives have to say about Neo is the importance of Roman’s hat and scarf which I like on her, since Neo is mute she can’t exactly say what her motives are so a clear display on what she’s doing all this crime for is great! A good “Show Don’t Tell” example right here. 

Next thing you know they talk about an impossible to see keychain. We’re gonna mention a cute little keychain that nobody can see rather than get an explanation as to why Neo would go to the North Pole with lack of warm clothing?

And why not just put the keychain on her waist or pouch so we can see if it was worth a mention at all???

Hair

The model is bad. Especially the hair as it’s so bulbous you can’t exactly see the keychain- come to think of it! Why not also change Neo’s hairstyle if you wanted the keychain on the back??? Though I suppose whatever hair they decided for Neo still wouldn't be pleasant to look at as both versions of Neo’s old and new hair don’t look good. They even messed up her white hair streaks. The giant hair that acts like a really wide cape much like Yang’s golden hair, does this thing where it seems to get in the way of what I can see when she does her acrobatics. 

Primary Color - Pink, Brown, White!

Okay I know she’s more so defined as pink! 

Honestly the color placement is something I didn't mind when I was tweaking the outfit around. I think it’s just a good amount of all three colors coming together minus the hair- my recoloring would’ve robbed Neo of her signature color to make her be more like Roman which is too much. The white ‘coat’ does at least make me see Neo’s limbs when in combat as again the hair in the way can’t make me see much of her in her dark brown ‘coat’.

Positives?

This applies to Weiss’ Atlas look but she does look great in the Ever After. A weirdly explicit version of the Mad Hatter is whacky and something I could mind less since she’s now not in a freezing environment. CRWBY did very well to make Neo’s design make sense in this world and took the opportunity with it just like how they did with Jaune and what they didn’t do with Weiss.

Conclusion

This outfit is still bad!!! I know many like Neo! I do too! Her semblance is cool and she had an interesting enough story of her avenging her crime boss but the outfit just sucks! The designer didn’t care much about Neo’s outfit besides Roman’s hat and scarf which is important, don’t get me wrong… but so is making her be competent. She is gonna go cold so FAST I’m not even kidding. The giant hair isn’t gonna protect her either.

This is just a design to appease fans of the fan favorite character in a fan service outfit, I got no other impression other than that. They just wanted to make Neo popular, no matter what, and I hate it for it. 

But of course it’s just my opinion. If you love this design or hate the design, please share your opinion. I’d love to hear it!

I live for character interactions with variety of different personalities, especially in RWBY.

Well done RWBY Dust Queen, you made me fall in love with the team again in giving them such personality through dialogue and animation that I missed for so long.

The Three Immortals - Tiger, Deer & Goat.

Their deaths were… greatly exaggerated. If they were mentioned or antagonists in a season, they’d definitely be the biggest sore losers.

I was gonna draw more of these ideas out but I feel like allergies are taking over me so here’s some words about them underneath the cut.

Tiger Strength Immortal aka Tiger.

* Tiger is the first of the three to meet the Monkie Crew through a flyer for Pigsy’s Noodles that Pigsy tossed around months ago during his Ping Pong Madness and desire for a worthy opponent.

* “Beat the head chef in ONE game of ping pong and you’ll get free noodles for life.” The offer still stands but I haven’t decided if Tiger or Pigsy wins as both outcomes are funny in my head. However, I do think Tiger does make Pigsy work up a sweat at the very least in their game.

* He absolutely adores Mo, any cat warms up Tiger’s heart but a demon cat? They’re the cutest things ever.

* While his head was actually cut off in the book, kid friendly reference to that is him being the quickest to get headaches or sharp pains in his neck.

Goat Strength Immortal aka Goat.

* While his defeat was by Wukong, he has the biggest hatred towards Tripitaka as the mortal won against him by doing LITERALLY NOTHING. It was the most pettiest loss that stuck with him for years, even extends to Tang when meeting the scholar.

* He gets in the way of FreeNoodles in threatening to take Tang away so there’s the shenanigans right there.

* He enjoys possessing mortals that he even found LBD’s former host to be amusing to him when hearing the story.

* While his body was actually boiled in oil in the book, kid friendly reference to that is him being sensitive to temperature, always demanding for the AC to be cranked up.

Deer Strength Immortal aka Deer.

* Deer was the actual mayor of the city, he’s just been on vacation and plotting schemes off screen for Totally Not The Mayor to jump in.

* His off screen schemes includes being the most vocal and favorable to other demons and celestials to get back more favors that they lost in JTTW, even getting a favor card from Ao Guang and Muzha to cash in some day.

* Shamelessly loves gore horror movies.

* While his heart and other vital organs were removed from him in the book, kid friendly reference to that is getting angry/paranoid the easiest to feel like he’s having a heart attack.

Ruby Rose.

Now since your ask already includes the limit of 10 images I can’t necessarily show or pick one to specifically point out so I’ll just round up my thoughts about all of them.

When coloring characters my limit is 4 or 5 colors on the palette before it becomes unfocus or messy. I’m sure there are exceptions with characters having like 10+ colors on them and still looking stunning but this is just my rule to color palettes. Ruby wearing an additional color like Green, Gray or Pink is once again dapper but I don’t think you can have them all together in the same design.

Ruby now has Red, Black, Silver, Gray, Green and Pink on the 5th image that don’t really mesh well. If anything it’s overwhelming with the colors clashing. I think it’s best to just add one new color to a character’s already established color palette than 3 more like how the rest of the images do.

I love seeing Ruby in green for Oscar or Penny! I love seeing Ruby in pink to look like an innocent strawberry badass! I love seeing Ruby in a shade of gray that doesn’t blend in with her skin tone! But all three colors into one design might result in being unfocused like Yang’s Mistral outfit-

Overall you’ve made the impossible be possible when it comes to character designs, I’m sure there’s an actual way to incorporate all the new colors into Ruby without it fighting for attention. Sorry if I do sound too harsh, I really try not to since I love any character redesign to death but still wanna be unbiased. Plus I’m really picky on colors cause that’s very important to characters names in the RWBY Universe-

Green on Ruby is super dapper, you just gotta make sure the green doesn’t overtake Ruby’s palette as her main color is Red and Black. Red being more important than anything else. If she got to wear green for Oscar that would be nice.

The outfit is once again combat ready but also in style, if not more hardcore and badass looking in contrast to what she is, a pure looking soul. She just reads as more cool with Yang definitely being a bigger influence on her choice of fashion.

Overall she looks great!

Do you have a scan of that turnaround image of rubys mistral design? Ive been trying to make fan models for the rwby cast that are as close to show accurate as possible but its a pain to find modeling references

Unfortunately no I don’t have some scanner to completely scan the page of Ruby’s model.

At best this is the closest you’ll get from Ruby’s wiki to see her front model perfectly in a T-pose.

RWBY characters are like Barbie dolls, we dress them up in pretty outfits and make our own stories for them.

The strategy nowadays pffft.

Incase you’re curious, I find Yang and Blake’s outfits awful, Ruby and Weiss got it best for them in the Mistral Arc.

Sorry for the long wait of responding to your asks! I’ve just been taking a break of redesigns all together until May started so now I’m just ready to hop in and talk about them.

Ruby Rose.

The hoodie version of her, once again Ruby doesn’t need a huge red cape to be little red riding hood. She looks so good in a sweater, why hasn’t she worn one at all yet? This is a good casual look but also a good huntress look? She can easily fight in this if she really wanted to, the amount of red is amazing and totally her style. You mentioned this was inspired by an AU Ruby from someone else, I’ve seen it here and there and yeah it looks good! You got Ruby to look cool but also ready for a fight on the streets, Yang would be proud.

The witch version, she needs to be put in a spin off with Maka Albarn from Soul Eater right now- she looks cool if not fantastical! Though I do think it’s too goth? Kinda used to Ruby being bubbly at best through fan designs so maybe an outfit like this could work better when she’s attending Signal Academy than any current Ruby, even if it’s just a casual outfit. The same can be said for her strawberry outfit, it’s cute for what she would wear if younger.

Overall, you got good outfits for Ruby in what she could hypothetically wear whether it’s during her time in Beacon or Signal.
