A minor rant about the mischaracterization of chief

I have a love-hate relationship with that one cutscene in infinite, you know, the one where he sees Cortana’s final message.

BECAUSE WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE WAS JUST LIKE LET’S KEEP GOING. MASTER CHIEF?? JOHN NOLASTNAME?? I get that he wants to keep fighting and there’s something about his coping mechanisms in there butttt. Come on!!!! When Johnson died, there was this moment and you KNEW he was devastated. When he says “We need to move”, he sounds agitated!! Cortana acknowledged it, she sounded miserable when she croaked out that “I’m so sorry”.

In 3, you KNEW, they TOLD you that chief was risking his life not just because cortana had the index, it was also because she was a dear friend if nothing else.

Same in 4! He goes against EVERYTHING he’s EVER KNOWN because del rio wanted to terminate cortana and again, he’s constantly trying to keep cortana alive despite the fact that she’s doomed!

Again, Reach!! He mourns his brothers and sisters! It’s obvious that he’s been scarred for life.

Another example despite the fact that I hate 5: him going AWOL. I mean, Cortana is alive, they won’t let him in on the job, he’s not sure what they’ll do to her. Of COURSE he’d go out of his way to find her first!! The execution of that did leave much to desire, though.

TL;DR: He is not a murder machine. He is human! A very loyal and thoughtful and caring one at that. I thought that the series was going in a direction where we were exploring that BUT NOOO. Come fuck that up!! They just keep pandering to those alpha male gooners and I am sooo sick of itttt!!
