I don’t know why it still astounds me that some latinx parents will want you to get a degree so bad but they dont actually what you to be educated (more specifically referring to women). 

they want you to have that degree but they dont want to deal with an educated woman. they still want to be able to manipulate you with machista tactics. they want to be able to show off that their daughter has a degree but dont want for her to become aware of the ways they guilt her into following problematic cultural values. 

a degree is okay but only if the woman that receives it still lives under their term and conditions. 

lord forbid you dont want to get married, speak out against machismo, refuse to believe in their god, dress in a way you feel comfortable, or stand against respectability politics… because if not “para que te sirvio que te ayudaramos ir a la escuela si te vas a comportar como una de la calle.”

“ I have had like three people recently tell me that I’m 13 even though I’m turning 20 in August. The first one was a waitress that gave me clam chowder. I’ve got money.” And he looked at me like,“Wow you have money?” And I was like, “ Yeah.” So he pressed the cash button, and I said, “ No, I have a credit card.” He was like, “ How do you have a credit card? You’re so young! You’re like 13!” [driver seat begins to slowly descend backwards] I was like, “ Yeah. I got a credit card.”[emotionlessly] “ Wow. That’s so amazing that you have a credit card. That’s so crazy cuz you’re so young. Wow. A credit card. Wow.”
