World Notes: Inhabitants of the City Below

The City Below is a remnant of the Old World, mostly a system of caves used for a kind of tunneling train common in the golden years of the old society. Rumors about what is truly down there range from boundless riches to Hell itself. On account of the dark and damp, few people venture down to verify such claims. However, not everyone lives in fear of the shadows. A certain alchemist is known to live in the caves below the eastern portion of Northern City, puzzling the secrets of this world one by one. It is their observations which have allowed the Lady to utilize belowground travel so effectively.

World Notes: Setting

Blessed takes place in a not-quite future, filled with technology and a constantly degrading human society. Old-world devices advanced to insane levels before the fall of society, and the entire planet is crawling with outdated and perpetually adapting technology. A suspicious lack of AI can be noted, such advanced technology needing far more upkeep than humans today can supply. Human society is centered around water sources, central areas of the continent (only one continent) having been converted to a desert known as the Erg. While the existence of multiple cities is implied, the Followers begin their mission in the Northern City. It lacks government and is mostly self-sufficient as it has a great deal of infrastructure remaining from the old world.

Overview: The Sand City

Northern City, or the Sand City, is the birthplace of The Lady, all of the Followers, and the origin of The Lady’s following. Built dangerously close to the edge of a tectonic plate, the city is plagued by near-constant ground tremors. It was once a cutting-edge paradise in which the best and brightest inventors created the best and brightest technology for the world to use. But as time went on, the city deteriorated, and this city of light became the sand-scoured hell it is now. In today’s world, Northern City is an amalgamation of crude, ramshackle buildings slapped on top of decaying steel corpses.

But the old world can still be glimpsed in the city below the ground and in the sky, if one looks hard enough. Up above, structures of glass and metal scrape the clouds, too tall to take down but still not stable enough to inhabit. Down below, buildings connected by a crumbling and confusing system of tunnels have been left mostly untouched by the new world order. That would be due to pragmatism, mostly. To any sane person, no resource is worth a journey into that darkness.

Overview: The Followers

The Followers are adherents to the word of the Blessed, and a peculiar group. Composed of a growing but select few, the Followers are The Lady’s most trusted few. Other than The Lady Herself, they are the only ones who know the true nature of The Blessed. They vary in backgrounds, and can seem to have very little in common. The only common denominator between them is their loyalty to The Lady and Her mission.

So far, we have six Followers (all of whom will be introduced soon). We have The Lady, The General, The Missionary, The Torchbearer, The Devoted, and The Alchemist. Character visuals (and lore sneak peeks) have already been posted on instagram @ lhschickencult, if you're interested in that.

As an additional note: all of the Followers have tattoos with the Blessed's signature rune on them. Often the tattoo is small or hidden, but having the mark is a requirement of The Lady's trust.

Blessed - what is it?

Blessed is the name of a creative writing project! The lore is collaborative with several of my friends, and characters are designed by or based off of us! Character visuals can be seen on instagram @ lhschickencult

This tumblr page will be a combination of the story itself, pieces of lore, and various world-building or character notes. I'll be updating ~once a week if possible.
