hate when people think the only archetype possible for a male sidekick to a female protagonist is a soft boi and/or himbo. like the implication there is that the only reason a man would ever defer to a woman’s authority is if he was a bumbling idiot. love male supporting characters who are smart and strong and confident and can step up when necessary but still kind and humble enough to let someone else take the lead most of the time

The juxtaposition of BTVS 2x13 and ATS 2x16 really highlights how unproductive it is to boil Angel’s curse down to “he loses his soul if he has sex.” He lost his soul after having sex with Buffy because they were in love with each other and found comfort and beauty in each other during dark times. In many ways it was a natural progression of their relationship, and of course sleeping with the woman he’s loved for so long would be “perfect happiness” for Angel. Meanwhile sleeping with Darla unsurprisingly wasn’t “perfect happiness” because 1) he has a very complicated (often negative) relationship with Darla, and 2) he was severely depressed at that point. You can have great sex and still be miserable. It feels so juvenile to equate sex with happiness. Life is a lot more complicated than that, and so is mental health.

You watch BTVS and it’s like “Angel’s so mysterious and brooding” and then you watch ATS and it’s like “oh this man has clinical depression.”
