i told myself i was done griping about sotr, but making burdock be haymitch’s best friend and confirmed covey relation just cheapened so much of haymitch and katniss’s relationship from the hunger games. katniss isn’t some random spirited kid from the seam that haymitch sees himself in. she’s not a girl that he takes one look at and, after decades of losing kids says “maybe this one could be a winner.” he doesn’t call her sweetheart to irritate her, knock her down a bit, because he was once a cocky kid who thought he knew the extent of the capitol’s cruelties, and he needs her to listen to him. he doesn’t try harder to be sober because of these two random kids that come into his life, shake it up and remind him what it is to love.
nope. instead the narrative gives him no choice but to love her. how could he not? she wore pigtails like louella, she knows lenore dove’s songs, she’s got burdock’s blood and maysilee’s pin. he feels guilty for how he handled his friendships after the quell, and now he’s given this perfect moment to atone for it. and imagine you’re a parent, you knew haymitch when he was younger, saw him running around with burdock everdeen. he’s been considered the joke of the district, a horrible mentor, and yet, you see him stepping up as a proper mentor for katniss, his childhood best friend’s kid. it honestly makes him seem like he’s just a shitty person who can’t be bothered to see past his own grief for the sake of saving others some, except for when it comes to the people he used to be friends with. and, as if haymitch’s inability to do anything of his own volition wasn’t taken from him in the entirety of this book, suzanne somehow manages to strip him of his choices in the og trilogy too, and he can no longer choose to love katniss of his own accord.
#i cant lie as soon as i found out haymitch was besties with katniss's dad i stopped reading it#cause there was no way it was going to be any good#everything i hear about this book sounds like sc just tossed together a bunch of reddit fan theories and called it a day#and yeah it makes haymitch look like an ass who didnt care about his tributes until his best friends daughter was reaped#until it became personal#sotr

booktok/romantasy books are like: Man BIG STRONG BIG BIG BIG sexually AGGRESSIVE and POSSESSIVE and ACTIVE, woman small small teeny tiny itty bitty virginal and passive, but she says one sarcastic thing so she ‘takes no shit’ and if you point this out or suggest perhaps it is not very good, you're an internalized misogynist and a traitor to your sisters
#and the most annoying thing is that they will insist that this dynamic is completely unique and never been done before#and its actually EMPOWERING and FEMINIST#and if you disagree you must hate women#if you like reading this stuff just own it#no need to pretend u are giving the finger to the patriarchy by reading this stuff

ngl azula fans have put me off the character more than her haters. her fandom is filled with imperialism apologists which is INSANE. like people really do try to act like her taking over ba sing se was non-violent as if that kind of thing isn’t inherently violent. i remember trying to find azula x sokka fanfics and for some reason they were filled with either hatred for katara and what she stood for, making fun of aangs airbending values, the water tribes being ‘savages’ and a weird praise of the fire nations imperialist values.
#hmm maybe I wrote all this to ask if there is any good azula and sokka fanfic#ideally one that does not try to white wash either character#or bitch about katara and aang lol#atla

you know there are a lot of parts in PJO where Annabeth is being unreasonable and mean-spirited but at no point is it framed in a way that invites the audience to resent her or criticise her for it (because Percy never sees her that way) and i really appreciate that
#YES!#this is something I really appreciated about pjo annabeth#she was allowed to be rough around the edges and a bit mean without it being her whole character and without being demonised for it#Annabeth chase

daenerys is a cultural icon but she is most certainly one of the most misunderstood characters which is so crazy to me considering she’s such an easy character to understand. she’s the only character whose motives are questions and twisted 24/7 when it’s clear she’s a selfless young girl who tries to see the best in others and make the best of the horrible awful shitty situations she’s in. she’s the only character whose abuse and rape is either mocked or severely downplayed, some even say she benefited from it. shes the only character who is going to ‘go mad’, when the other two targaryen contenders (both men, mind you) will not go mad, kill her, get her dragons and titles and rule instead of her. she’s the only character not allowed to get angry or have sexual autonomy. she’s the only character who is vilified for watching her long time abuser die. she’s the only character who’s abuse at the hands of her brother is completely disregarded. shes the only character not allowed to kill those who hurt her / those she loves. she’s the only character not allowed to retaliate against her baby being murdered. she’s the only character who’s entire childhood is downplayed and ignored. shes the only character who’s special connection to magic and dragons is so incredibly overlooked and downplayed and vilified. she’s the only character who must die in the end to ‘pay for her ancestors crimes’, when no other main character is (as if the work she’s doing isn’t actively going against her ancestors?) it’s all so fucking infuriating and this isn’t even all of it.

something something ‘feminine’ female characters being deserving of all things good and righteous and holy because of them overcoming their suffering by working within the system that hurts them using their wiley feminine attributes and charm something something ‘masculine’ female characters being villainized for fighting outside the constraints of the system they’re still subjected to in a more hands on approach and being victims of similar if not the same circumstances as their ‘feminine’ female peers but it doesn’t count for some reason because they don’t suffer as prettily as their counterparts something something
#yes this sums up what I was trying to say#but in a much more articulate and concise manner#fandom nonsense

the way historical fandoms talk about female characters who ‘fight against patriarchy’, is just very weird and regressive. i get these characters are not always well written and the writers often add modern day feminism into it in a very awkward way. but fandoms revulsion and disdain of these type of women tends to be sexist rather than a reaction bad writing.
#it’s way to late so I can’t express my thoughts properly#but the discourse is just annoying#fandom nonsense
