Cheat Sheets for Writing Body Language

We are always told to use body language in our writing. Sometimes, it’s easier said than written. I decided to create these cheat sheets to help you show a character’s state of mind. Obviously, a character may exhibit a number of these behaviours. For example, he may be shocked and angry, or shocked and happy. Use these combinations as needed.

A tool to use for find Synonyms: Synonym Finder.

This is a great, unique little tool I found by browsing for writing resources. It’s name speaks for itself: it’s a synonym finder.

The site is clean cut, has soothing colors, and to-the point results for any word you look up.

For example, when I look up the word “romance,” I get this:

Synonyms: romance, romanticism Definition: an exciting and mysterious quality (as of a heroic time or adventure)

Hypernyms: quality Definition: an essential and distinguishing attribute of something or someone Usage: the quality of mercy is not strained—Shakespeare”

I had no idea what a “hypernym” is. Apparently it’s a word with a more general meaning that a more specific word fall under. Like, color is a hypernym for green.

On the right corner there’s a button to make graphs! So you can trace each synonym from it’s root word, and see how far the other synonyms connect in comparison to others.

I really like it, so I’m going to definitely bookmark it on my writing tools list.

Ask me about my OCs ► Character Flaws!

Toss some numbers in my inbox and the character I should answer them for.

1. What is one thing others might find intolerable about them? 2. Do they have any annoying quirks? If so, what are they? 3. Name one or more of their bad habits. 4. Any addictions? (Food, sex, drugs/alcohol, shopping, power/control, etc.) 5. What is one thing they do that can negatively affect their relationship with friends? 6. Their romantic relationships? 7. What is the biggest mistake they’ve ever made? 8. What mistake(s) do they continue to make/have not learned from? 9. Name some of their major physical shortcomings. 10. Some of their emotional shortcomings? 11. What are their intellectual shortcomings? 12. At least one thing that they tend to overreact to. 13. In what ways might they be overly negative and/or pessimistic? 14. Is there anything they are too optimistic about? 15. How might they be ignorant or prejudiced? 16. Do they have any behaviors and/or beliefs that cannot be adequately justified? 17. When would they be too judgmental of someone or something? 18. Are they ever a pushover about something? If so, how? 19. Is there anything they refuse to budge on? What are they stubborn about? 20. What is a self-inflicted misery of theirs? (i.e. something they perpetuate themselves)

Auti-sim is a game where the player undergoes what it feels like to be an autistic child. 

The player navigates through a playground as an autistic child with auditory hypersensitivity. Closeness to loud children causes overload for the player, impacting thinking functions. This is represented as noise and blur and hearing distortion.

Participants described the experience as insightful and compelling.
