In 2016 short films/ extended videos/ visual albums etc. have become standard with most artists’ music project releases. The concept is not new, however it has become some what of an industry standard. Back in 1982 Michael Jackson had an incredible extended video for his single ‘Thriller’ remember the iconic red jacket, the zombies choreography, the morphing, well the whole thing is on youtube check it out, Daft Punk has done a couple of short films over the years including ‘Electroma’ in 2006, a must see, Kanye West did one for his ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’ in 2010, and of course the much hyped Beyonce’s ‘Lemonade’ earlier this year, just to mansion a few notable ones.
I’ve seen several this year, Schoolboy Q’s three part short film for ‘Blank Face LP’ comes to mind, Vince Staples ‘Prima Donna’, I really enjoyed, Masego’s ‘Small Talk’, very short but outstanding piece of work, most importantly the subject matter which brings me to the reason why I’m writing this – Common’s ‘Black America Again’ short film a very important piece of work in light of recent events in the world, events stretching from the regular shootings of African-American by cops to Donald Trump being elected President, in-fact maybe bit longer than that, perhaps a couple of centuries, and by the way it’s not just about America or even Donald Trump it’s about the the whole world.
Back to Common’s ‘Black America Again’, sure there are undertones that refer to issues of race, politics and so forth, but all of that put aside it is still, a very well done film, the picture, the content and the message. Loved all 21min.
