Hi I’m Sharné, a crazy cat lady, full time interior designer who loves fashion, being creative, getting crafty, coming up with plant based recipes and living a green vegan lifestyle! My blog is a place where I’d like to combine all those things so fellow Capetonians can be inspired by my plant based recipes, green crafty diy’s and discover new green vegan products on my directory and cool cape town spots to visit. #captownvegan #southafricanblogger #capetown

Hi, just wondering on your opinion on carnivorous pets and how to feed them ethically :)
It is a very difficult question to answer. I myself have cats. Cats are carnivores by nature and dogs are omnivores. They both need meat to survive but humans do not. Cats and dogs were domesticated by humans and they are our responsibility. The food my cats eat do have animal products in them. Its sucks that I have to buy these products but I love my cats and want them to be healthy. I am on the lookout for a cat food brand in South Africa that has free range meat in their products. Animals would still need to die to make the products but what else can one do? I would suggest to any other vegan who wants to adopt a furry friend to rather get one that eats plants only.

One of the comments I hear most often is that people think my vegan diet is so limiting. In fact, I eat so much more variety now, and in more creative, delicious, fun ways, than I ever imagined could be possible

Being vegan is easy. Are there social pressures that encourage you to continue to eat, wear, and use animal products? Of course there are. But in a patriarchal, racist, homophobic, and ableist society, there are social pressures to participate and engage in sexism, racism, homophobia and ableism. At some point, you have to decide who you are and what matters morally to you. And once you decide that you regard victimizing vulnerable nonhumans as not morally acceptable, it is easy to go and stay vegan.

Why do vegans try to simulate meat or animal products with certain things? For example, tofurkey, meatless morning star "sausage patties," vegan cheese, etc. I understand that it's for people who used to eating animal products and have given up animal products, but if a vegan is so disgusted in meat, why do they want to mock it so much?
Vegans are disgusted by what meat actually is and where it comes from as opposed to the taste, texture and flavour. It would be the equivalent of you consuming human meat your whole life being unaware of what that actually means then finding out and switching to a plant based diet. Obviously, you’d be repulsed that you’d been cannibalistic but you’d also miss what you were raised to eat, so you may want to try to simulate it. This is how it is for vegans with non human animal meat. Some of us miss the texture, the taste and the flavours because it’s what we were raised on, so it’s nice to have the option to eat something similar made out of cruelty free foods.I hope this makes sense. I’ve tried my best to help you to understand.
