Meanwhile, the Royal Steeds Duo are having a calm teatime chat with Cobalion and Virizion about the reckless stupidity of their fellow Legendary compatriots.

Said trio of compatriots are currently freaking out the locals by being stuck on the top of Macros Tower. Terrakion is trying to conceal his deep fear of heights and failing, Regieleki is shooting lightning at people and yelling maniacally about “you want a real energy crisis, you bloody idiots?!” and Regidraco is questioning their own existence.

I’m guessing he has the Tank job? It’s the one that would be easiest to retheme around trains.

And Emmet deserves to Acquire Really Big Gun after the trauma he went through.

As unequivocally true and touching as this statement is, most who witness it are not the ones to deal with what remains.

This is the third time this week I’ve had to ask management for another mop because someone had a breakdown and shared it with the environment.

i have such a love for characters who descend into madness or villainy out of deep, deep empathy. characters who fundamentally cannot cope with the cruel realities they find themselves in and blow up about it in spectacular fashion. fallen angel type characters with tears of outrage in their eyes. characters who break before they bend, and break so badly they splatter blood all over their noble ideals. every variation on it gets me so good

I'm gonna need a lot of details on what the Toad Swap Legion (aka the former Toads) are like.

i’ll do my best!

- when you first meet curator they’re all in your face about it, whether unintentional or not, so i imagine highlighter is REALLY pushy and opinionated. like on overlook mountain you can hear a voice yelling at you to come visit overlook tower from a mile away- their main attack involves highlighting both mario and some of the panels; highlighting mario speeds up gameplay and highlighting panels will reverse their intended effect (ie a left panel now goes right, a +1 is now a -1)

- since mc toad is less of a drama queen than rubber band, binder clip’s ‘big show’ is function over fashion. he does gloat to you about how you freeing those toads was your ‘own undoing’ though, he’s dramatic in his own way. more subdued abt it. most of the binder-clipped roads are staff who are plot relevant in some way so you do end up having to play into his plans, but i think id also throw in one or two optional toads so you can have a self-imposed ‘hard mode’, his gimmick works like most other ‘self projectile’ origami king bosses where his hp decreases when he fires out clips, and it’s on you to prevent them from returning to him

- magnifier is pretty much the ‘traitorous member’ that scissors is, aka they never betray the origami king ingame but the seeds are... certainly there. he becomes enamoured with the ancient ones and their culture and kinda has one or two throwaway lines that he ‘hopes king odell never checks underground because he quite likes this place how it is’. he’s probably the outwardly friendliest member but like hole punch covers up his tricks with a disco attitude, magnifier is 100% willing to use force if anyone gets in the way of his research. his gimmick is burning panels off so that they get ruined

- compass is very much a lone wolf free spirit. he gets the origami king to freeze over the ocean with the ice vellumental (this is after the events of the princess peach so marios like WTF IT WASNT FROZEN LAST TIME) and basically skates all over the ocean... he attacks you if you run into him so your best bet is to find an island and wait til he passes you by. he offers to leave you alone if you simply back away from the streamer but olivia calls him out bc the only reason they’re here IS to destroy the streamer. his attack is to cut off certain rings of the circle with his compass so basically one ring at a time will only have the ‘move forward’ option as mario has to jump from one ring to the next

- liquid paper is probably the most uppity of them all, they’ve decided that shangri spa is ‘under new management’ and also torments bowsers minions twice as much ‘for the good of the spa’. very nasty. their attack is covering the board with liquid paper so you have to remember which buttons do what, but you can scratch out some if you step over it once

legion of stationery swap au w/ toads!

red streamer: colored pencils swaps with curator toad

why this supply was chosen: curator enjoys using the museum to give praise to mario’s various achievements, and even has a trophy room, much like a highlighter is used to give a bright coloration to the most important parts of a text

how they change:

 as a ‘tacky’ office supply, the curator toad would probably attack overlook tower bc it’s ‘not noteworthy enough’ and try to spruce it up by attacking it bc ‘this tower should be one fit for a king!’

as a regular old toad, colored pencils isnt nearly as monstrous, even missing his eyesore hair highlights. instead he’s a curator who’s just a tad too snooty, and this causes him to beg mario on his hands and knees to come visit, because his visit numbers at the musee are at an all time low

blue streamer: mc toad swaps with rubber band

why this supply was chosen: since i see mc toad as rb’s kind of ‘understudy’, i wanted to pick something that reflects that- an office supply that keeps things clamped together, but a different supply from a rubber band

how they change:

instead of an abandoned theme park and finding all the trapped toads near the end, you free all the staff across the park from mysterious clips- only to realize youve spelled your own doom as youve just been freeing the parts to binder clip the whole time. hes an actor like rb is but only does one show which is shogun studios themed

as a regular toad, rubber band is the one employee at shogun studios whos overly passionate at their job- rb is definitely friends with the hardcore roleplayers you meet at the beginning of shogun studios, and she will loudly call other employees out if he hears them dropping the facade 

yellow streamer: professor toad swaps with hole punch

why this supply was chosen: a magnifier and anything like it is used to make things bigger and easier to understand, like a professors job would be! however it also serves as an opposite to hole punch because when combined with the sun, a magnifier can easily turn deadly

how they change: as an office supply, prof is STILL obsessed w the sun altar! only this time hes more enamored with the POWER of the sun. so he tries to harness the power of the sun as much as possible and delves into the temple of shrooms to learn more about these ancient ones who wrote this stuff

as a toad, hole punch is also a researcher, but hes also a clout chaser- think of him as the flint cragley of origami king. hes notorious for being a hit with the unknowing public, but many a scholar complain that this little devil will accidentally break SO many historical artifacts

purple streamer: captain t. ode swaps with tape

why this supply was chosen: obviously bc the comparisons of a mathematical compass and a direction-pointing compass, but geographical tools like these are often used for cartography- plus i thought a tool so specific could give t ode a bit of a ‘lone wolf’ reputation among the legion

how they change: t ode wishes to explore the seas, and he’s marking down the coordinates of every island he sees- so what if he destroys the island in the progress? he’s an EXPLORER! and the ocean will be his map! if mario doesnt stop him, he might even bust open diamond island by force… leaving no stone unturned

meanwhile, tape is an adventurer like t ode, but instead of having mellowed out, hes about the guy youd expect to do bullshit like steal a submarine for the quirkiness of it all. also his ‘ancient one dialect’ is just the brooklyn accent. hilarity does ensue 

green streamer: shangri-spa toad swaps with scissors

why this supply was chosen: since the shangri-spa toads are all white (likely thanks to exposure to the stream of jungle mist), liquid paper would be a good equivalent to a ‘colorless’ supply that erases things in a similar way

how they change: since theres no one distinct shangri spa toad npc, its more the idea that a ‘head’ shangri spa toad would become liquid paper and said liquid paper would adopt a ‘holier than thou’ attitude and cover up anyones ‘ugliness’ with said liquid paper so that shangri spa can be ‘perfect’

meanwhile, scissors is the lucifer of the shangri spa ‘angels’- those dark spots are just dirt bc she hates looking like a toad, quit her job when bowsers castle crashed into shangri spa and has been nagging kamek nonstop into letting her join bowsers army instead

stapler stays the same (sorry buddy)

olly also becomes a second partner to mario in this au, and replacing him as the origami king is…

Brilliant idea I just had: Gorumbla’s soul gem is black. Considering his “warlock” state and the corruption of soul gems being signified by a black taint, I think it’s fitting.

Bowser’s Soul Gem pattern is a flame. Like one they’d use for the Pokemon fire type icon. Apparently his face is not applicable as a potential pattern. He complains about it every time someone brings up the patterning speech topic.

Junior’s Soul Gem pattern is 🎨. I don’t know what it’s actually called, but hopefully someone will recognize the emoji. His weapon is his magic paintbrush, and he is very proud that the Forces That Be recognized his artistic talent.

Her taunting laughter echoed through Shun’s psyche as he wiped the slushie away from his eyes.

“You really think that you’re still allowed the privilege of being my boyfriend?” Adaphne cackled. “With your terrible economic standing of squalid to the power of destitute?”

His body began to tremble, tears forming on his face as he pulled back.

“With your intelligence status barely reaching lesser genius levels?”

He futilely grasped at the table as his breath got stuck in his throat.

“With that category seven natural disaster of a face?”

A mocking grin spread across her face, sending waves of heartbreak through his mentality.

“You will ever be alone.”

His sanity shattered as she leaned in close, her lips spread wide.

“Freak.”

A loud crack reverberated across the high-end club.

“Hmm? Was that the last of your naivety breaking into…” Adaphne trailed off as a dark chuckle escaped Shun’s lips.

“Alone. Always alone!”

His demented giggling escalated to broken laughter, flowing like a tidal wave of sewage as the area warped around him.

“Friends, family, romantic relationships, anything? Sorry, Shun, they’re dead or gone forever! Or both! Try to make a connection, and it will not be allowed to exist! You’re always going to be an unwillingly isolated cosmic mistake!”

Adaphne glanced around, but all of the exits had been erased, and everyone around her was either asleep or unconscious, being held close by ooze-like abominations.

A hand was placed upon her shoulder, and she turned her head to see Shun’s new sludgy form.

“Don’t worry, my sweet Adaphne.”

His arm began to distort, tendrils forming across her body as she was pulled close.

“I shall keep you safe and sound from any sorrow that troubles you.”

She futilely grasped at the floor, her body caught in his grasp.

“Everyone shall have a comforted smile as they rest in the embrace of loving arms.”

A love struck grin spread across his face, sending waves of terror through her mind.

“We will never be alone.”

Her hope faded as he leaned in close, his lips puckered.

“Darling.”

A muffled scream echoed across the labyrinth.

It had been slowly building for a long time.

“Eh, it was okay.”

“Oh, I didn’t see you there.”

“Yeah, yeah, you did fine too.”

Ten thought of the matter as the following.Each time was like ripping a feather off a chicken for roasting- from the chicken’s point of view. A sharp pang of despair, quickly fading. Never enough to break someone on its own, but there were only so many feathers before the bird was bare- and the next step would be the cooking fire.

And there would be nothing left but oblivion.

The last feather came off on a sunny day in a busy street junction. The populace was absorbed by daily activities, enough so that they missed the street performer getting clipped by a speeding motorcycle during a police chase. The man would have died if Ten hadn’t gotten someone to call an ambulance while he stabilized the poor fellow.

When the ambulance drove off, Ten was relieved. “Thank the stars he’s getting professional medical care.” He said as the sirens faded. “That’s the first time I’ve wrapped bandages under pressure like that. I was worried it would fail.”

Most of the citizens had gone back to their normal routines, unable to notice him anymore. The only one who still perceived him was the lady who had called the ambulance, and blank confusion settled across her face.

“I’m sorry, who are you?”

And the flame ignited.

The emotional agony was unbearable. Ten could barely understand the reality around him through his pain.

He wouldn’t be a victim to this, he decided.

Regular birds perish from fire.

But a phoenix only got stronger.

A minute passed.

A few blocks away, Kyubclusa tensed, and turned to the others he was with.

“A new witch was just born.”
