Frank Auerbach
I want to write something about Frank Auerbach. I can't write anything about Frank Auerbach. Using words to describe the work of Frank Auerbach does it a disservice. There are no words to describe the work of Frank Auerbach. Fearless is a word I would use to describe the work of Frank Auerbach. Fearless Frank Auerbach. When I show my students the work of Frank Auerbach, I don't know what to tell them. I don't know how talk about the work of Frank Auerbach. How do you paint like Frank Auerbach? You don't. Period. Nobody painted like Frank Auerbach. Frank Auerbach was British but he was born in Germany. Frank Auerbach's parents were murdered in Auschwitz. Frank Auerbach lived to be 93 years old. Frank Auerbach was friends with Francis Bacon, Lucien Freud, Leon Kossoff, and R.B. Kitaj and outlived them all. When I look at Frank Auerbach's work, I feel like I still paint with fear. Frank Auerbach's work exists with force and fury and presence. I can tell my students to draw like Frank Auerbach. I can tell my students to draw without fear, to draw like they have nothing left to lose. I cannnot tell them to draw like their parents were murdered at Auschwitz. Because what is there to fear after that? What is left to lose? What is there left to do but draw and paint?
I don't remember the first time I saw Frank Auerbach's work. I don't remember the first time I got a book of Frank Auerbach's work. I don't think I've ever seen Frank Auerbach's work in person. I feel like I would know if I've seen Frank Auerbach's work in person. I've seen Leon Kossoff's work in person, at LA Louver in 2022, which is kind of similar to Frank Auerbach's. Wait - I have seen Frank Auerbach's work in person. At the Getty, in 2016. Alongside his old buddies, Bacon, Kossoff, Freud, Kitaj, Andrews. I think I even have the catalog. I want to see more of Frank Auerbach's work in person. I must've seen Frank Auerbach's work at the Tate, in 2012 or 2017? But maybe I wasn't aware of Frank Auerbach yet, or as much. According to my purchase history on AbeBooks, I bought a Frank Auerbach book in 2018. Why did I buy a Frank Auerbach book in 2018? What is my personal history with Frank Auerbach's work? Why can't I trace it exactly? It is as mysterious as Frank Auerbach's work, as painting is in general, as life is, at its most lived and experienced, at its most cruel and absurd, full of sorrow and savagery.
