in regards to the snape casting controversy i hereby present an (apperantly) unpopular opinion:

the harry potter fandom is as equally close-minded and non-inclusive as j.k. rowling herself. if you want accuracy, read the books. if you hate change, watch the old movies.

if that concept is hard to grasp, i’m more than glad to elaborate:

honestly, the backlash over casting a black actor as snape just proves that the harry potter fandom hasn’t learned anything from the themes of the story they claim to love. this is a series about challenging prejudice, about looking past surface appearances to see what lies beneath—and yet, here we are, with fans losing their fucking minds because someone dared to imagine snape differently. if your idea of a ‘faithful adaptation’ is so rigid that it can’t accommodate a bit of diversity, maybe the problem isn’t the adaptation—it’s you. snape’s essence isn’t his skin tone; it’s his complexity, his pain, his moral ambiguity. if you can’t handle a new interpretation, maybe stick to rereading the books and rewatching the old movies, because clearly, that’s where your comfort zone ends.

and let’s talk about the hypocrisy for a second. a lot of people in this fandom are quick to cancel j.k. rowling, calling her out for her exclusionary views—and rightly so. but then they turn around and throw the same fucking kind of bullshit bigoted, gatekeeping energy at a casting decision like this. you can’t claim to be better than her if you’re going to act like diversity somehow ‘ruins’ the story. if your version of being a progressive fan is simply rejecting rowling’s personal beliefs while clinging to every other outdated aspect of her creation, then maybe you’re not as inclusive as you think you are.

it’s wild how some fans will spend hours dissecting the series’ deeper themes of acceptance, forgiveness, and prejudice, only to ignore those same lessons when confronted with something as simple as a casting decision. representation doesn’t hurt the integrity of the story—it enriches it. characters like snape aren’t beloved because of how closely their appearances align with what’s described in the books; they’re beloved because of their emotional depth, their struggles, their impact on the narrative. if a different actor can bring that to life in a way that resonates, why is that such a fucking problem? maybe it’s time for yall to fucking reflect on whether your outrage is truly about preserving the story—or just preserving your own narrow vision of it. thanks
