Before we wrap: Do you have a message for Olivia and Elliott shippers?
"No, only because I've been asked this question so many times, I can't deal with it. I want them to ship female empowerment. I want them to ship good leadership and the fact that we are in it together. I want them to ship fierce female friendships and women supporting women and allowing each other and ourselves to have our voice." - Marsika; Parade, 2024.

So. Let's talk about the Parade interview.
Firstly, let me be clear: in my opinion, the question posed by Parade was a misstep (to put it politely). This interview was meant to focus on Purina's Purple Leash Project, which is a public awareness campaign and initiative aimed at promoting and supporting pet owners who are victims of domestic abuse.
Personally, I think that it is wildly inappropriate to discuss fictional ships during an interview focused on serious topics, such as assisting victims of abuse and their pets, or finding shelters that accommodate pets. It's also problematic that Parade used an interview about domestic abuse to create a clickbait title about Mariska's response to shipping EO.
This type of conversation is not relevant or respectful to the sensitive issues being discussed, or Mariska herself.
For that reason, I understandable why Mariska was reluctant to answer. However, I do think that her response was poorly worded.
The issue is that I took with her statement was that it implied that fans who ship EO don't have the capacity to care about female empowerment and friendships, which is simply not true. Many fans, like myself, are feminists and we value both aspects of the show.
In fact, the show's lack of female friendships is a major disappointment, particularly with the removal of Amanda and Kat.
I don't believe Mariska deserves any vitriol for her response, but I hope she understands that fans want to see Olivia happy in both her personal friendships and romantic relationships. We want to see her empowered, with strong female friendships, and in a healthy relationship. It's not either-or, but rather both-and. Fans have been invested in the show for 25 years, and it's frustrating to be strung along only to be told to prioritize one aspect over the other.
TL;DR: Mariska's response was poor, but her annoyance was understandable. It is shameful that Parade's inability to read the room resulted in an important interview about domestic violence survivors being pushed aside and turned into fandom drama.

“mamma mia” and then suddenly my life is better. suddenly outside is brighter (it is so dark the sun has set). suddenly the air is clearer (literally smoking). maybe the super trouper lights are going to find me. like they always do. ‘cause somewhere in the crowd there’s you.
