it's halloween so i'm breaking sequence again to post some thriller bark thoughts: this isn't a proper screencap but i liked this line a lot (said to luffy and co after everyone got their shadows back)

throughout thriller bark i loved the use of shadows and sunlight as like a metaphor for stagnation caused by grief? especially for brook but also extending to the way gecko moria was using shadows to make zombies as a replacement for the crew he lost

getting your shadow taken means you can never leave thriller bark and never see the sun again, unless you defeat yourself in a duel and take it back. gecko moria is taking his pain and turning it outwards on everyone else, ending people's lives to try and get back something he lost, but you can't get people back from the dead. and brook has been fighting himself for so long, missing his crew, wishing things could have been different, not knowing if he should bother staying alive. when he fights his zombie he loses and bides his time trying to get stronger. he's still fighting as best he can but he can't move on. and then here come the strawhats, fresh out of enies lobby and more bonded than ever, who against all odds take down gecko moria and free everyone and give brook the confirmation that Yes, it is worth it to keep going, it's always worth it

and "giving us the sun" is such a beautiful way to put it. using the sun as a metaphor for life, and freedom, and joy, and the future, because it literally is lifegiving.. the sun is just as much part of the shadow stealing metaphor as the shadows are. thank you for giving us our lives back and letting us move forward again, into the sunlight

luffy and co keep doing this in different ways to lots of the people they meet, so drawing a parallel between him+the strawhats to the sun feels really apt. and luffy has a radiant smile and a round yellow hat :]

this part fucking breaks me in half dude i love that when brook sits down to play the final song he ever got to sing with his beloved crew, it's a song that everyone knows, and they all join in and sing along!!! luffy knows it because of shanks, and lola's crew know it, and everyone has probably heard it at least once even if they don't know all the words!!

brook is an old pirate, from before roger's time, and he's been gone for so long..... but how beautiful it is that this song he loves has persisted on pirate ships all over the world for fifty years and he can sing it again with his new family

i love this bit of characterization that (usually) the strawhats aren't immune to flattery, from their captain it makes sense but it's especially funny that it even applies to compliments from terrifying warlord of the sea bartholomew kuma

i've noticed that Especially nami usopp and chopper are like this which is silly because they're the biggest cowards
