Solve a problem/pain-point that you yourself have and share the solution to others. If it's a problem you have, there's a good chance others experience the same problem. It's also probably the only way you'll care enough to suffer through the hard work of building a startup. • If you haven't checked it out yet, be sure to head over to Paul Graham's blog. It's a trove of startup knowledge. If you're reading this and you're a user of Dropbox (who isn't), you might be interested to take a scroll through the Hacker News forums from April 2007 when Drew Houston first launched Dropbox. You can see the feedback (and a little envy/hate) from his colleagues at Y-Combinator and elsewhere. Always interesting to see what people thought of an idea when it first appeared relative to where it's at today. • Link: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8863 • #Dropbox #DrewHouston #HackerNews #YCombinator #startup #startups #StartupStories #StartupQuote #StartupQuotes #business #BusinessQuote #BusinessQuotes #Entrepreneur #Entrepreneurship #Entrepreneurs #entrepreneurlife #StartupMarket #TheStartupMarket (at Calgary, Alberta)

"Do well by doing good" they say. • The coolest companies always have a mission that goes deeper than just selling products and making money. • This sounds like it implies charity of some sort, but doesn't need to be. • A cool example we've seen lately is the collaboration between Adidas and Parley, where they've used Bionic yarn made from recycled ocean plastic to produce sneakers and clothing. Check it out at: http://adidas.com/us/parley • Weave a meaningful cause into you're company and you'll get stronger buy-in from both consumers and employees. • #BizStone #ThingsALittleBirdyToldMe #Twitter #SocialEntrepreneurship #Adidas #Parley #BionicYarn #Startup #Startups #StartupQuote #StartupQuotes #Entrepreneur #Entrepreneurship #EntrepreneurQuotes #Business #BusinessQuotes #StartupMarket #TheStartupMarket (at San Francisco, California)

Amazon strategy in a nutshell 🥜: Step 1: Sell products at a thin margin (or temporary loss) Step 2: Attract internet traffic (aka customers) seeking out lowest prices and online convenience Step 3: Move large volumes of product by selling to said customers at lowest possible prices Step 4: Get suppliers hooked on increasingly large sales volumes Step 5: Negotiate with suppliers to obtain increasingly large volume discounts Step 6: Pass volume discounts on to customers Step 7: Go back to Step 1 (at Seattle, Washington)

If you're a company focused on competitors, you'll be a follower. - Tony Fadell (Nest) • Think of a good experience you had with a brand recently. Why was it good? • This isn't rocket science, but it is easier said than done. Being a customer-centric company is tough, but the ones that are, always seem to end up offering a superior customer experience and distancing themselves from the competition. • In other words; if you're a company focused on customers, you'll be a leader. • #TonyFadell #JoelSpolsky #StackExchange #StartupQuote #StartupQuotes #BusinessQuotes #BusinessQuote #EntrepreneurQuotes #EntrepreneurQuote #StartupMarket #TheStartupMarket #Startup #Startups #Entrepreneur #Entrepreneurship (at Boracay Philippines)

For those of you that haven't heard, @ycombinator has relaunched it's #StartupSchool You can check it out (and sign up) at: www.startupschool.org • To give you a taste for what you're in for, there's an amazing series of videos on the website from past years and the lectures held at Stanford University. Speakers include some of the most brilliant minds in the startup community including; Sam Altman, Paul Graham, Dustin Moskovitz, and Peter Thiel. If you're a startup founder, these lectures are a must-watch. • If that kind of stuff is your jam, you'll also want to check out the book pictured: Hackers and Painters by Paul Graham. • This book is a brilliant collection of essays he wrote for his blog that have been compiled into a book. It is a couple years old now, but many of the lessons still ring true today, and will offer you some insight into how this Paul thinks, and why YCombinator has been successful in launching over a dozen startups now worth over $50B each (e.g. #AirBnb, #Dropbox, #Zenefits, #Stripe etc). • Link to book: http://amzn.to/2neGTT1 • #YCombinator #StartupSchool #SamAltman #PaulGraham #DustinMoskovitz #PeterThiel #HackersAndPainters #Books #StartupBooks #Entrepreneur #Entrepreneurship #Entrepreneurs #Startup #Startups #StartupMarket (at Palo Alto, California)

Find your heroes - your mentors, and copy them. By copying you'll get a glimpse into their mind. The more mentors the better. People learn by copying. • That is not to say copy and pass off someone else's work as your own - that's theft, and won't get you far. The goal instead is to understand how they do what they do, and to do so the best way is to copy. • There is no shame in copying good ideas. But don't copy from a single source, copy from hundreds of sources, and in doing so you'll create something original. Which is why more mentors is better. • No one creates in a vacuum. Everyone is influenced by someone. • Examine where you fall short, and choose your heroes/mentors accordingly. • Mentors and heroes don't need to be people you know personally or interact with regularly (though you should find those people to have in your life too). They can be your favorite entrepreneurs, authors, bloggers. They can be online (or offline) communities. One-way communication is okay, but two-way is far better. Being able to ask questions will accelerate your own learning. • Bottom line. Find a mentor. • #YCombinator #SamAltman #Quote #StartupQuote #StartupQuotes #Startup #Startups #StartupMarket #Entrepreneur #Entrepreneurship #Mentor #Hero #MentorsAndHeroes #Copy #CopyTillYouMakeIt (at Palo Alto, California)

Why are you even reading this post? Why do some of the world's most popular apps amass millions (or even billions) of monthly active users when others fail? The reason may surprise you, and it has everything to do with human psychology. Being able to create triggers, anticipation, variable rewards, and nudging your users into investing their time, energy, money, data, and/or social capital into your product are the ingredients for an engaging and possibly even an addictive experience. The companies who (intentionally or not) have harnessed these principles have seen explosive growth in their user bases, with many of those users continuing to use the product or service long after they've initially signed up. You've likely already thought of several apps that you use daily, or possibly several times a day, and if you're reading this, you're using one of them right now. If you're a designer or an entrepreneur working on developing a product or service you'll likely want to understand these principles. These are lessons that go beyond software, and can be applied to virtually any business. We highly recommend this book. Check out Nir Eyal's book on the subject here: http://amzn.to/2jTwgna Also be sure to check out our steadily growing recommended reading list here: https://www.startup.market/recommended-reading #NirEyal #Hooked #HookModel #GrowthHacking #HabitForming #UX #UI #Design #UXDesign #Psychology #ConsumerBehavior #Startup #Startups #Entrepreneur #Entrepreneurship #StartupMarket #Book #StartupBooks (at Calgary, Alberta)

If you can get 100 people to use the word 'love' when describing your product, it probably means you've addressed a real pain-point and the world is genuinely better off with your #product in it. Furthermore, if your solution solves a problem for 100 people, it will likely also solve that same problem for far more than that, and positive word of mouth will ensure growth. • #AirBnb offers users a more localized experience than hotels, at a lower cost, while providing hosts with a new source of income. It solved a real problem. It now boasts upward of 50 million #users, and over 600,000 #hosts, many of which (including us) use the word 'love' when describing it, but you can be sure that when AirBnb launched it had less than 100 people using it. • Build something great, that truly adds value, and people will 'love' you for it. • • • • • #BrianChesky #StartupQuote #StartupMarket #Entrepreneur #Entrepreneurship #Startup #Startups #Love #Quote #CEO #Growth #WordOfMouth

This one is for all the #GIRLBOSSES and #ladypreneurs. Sophia started out a bit rough; living as a nomad, resorting to dumpster diving and stealing (for which she was eventually caught) to get by. She migrated to San Francisco and stumbled upon entrepreneurship via her passion for clothes, frequenting consignment stores she took pleasure in assembling vintage outfits through the lense of her own unique personal style. At the young age of 22 she started a humble #eBay shop based in San Francisco by taking photos of her friends in outfits and selling the ensembles online, giving herself a crash-course in #ecommerce. Those skills later proved useful when she was banned from eBay, forcing her to launch her own independent website Nasty Gal. Nasty Gal went on to become a small empire, catapulting Sophia to be among the world's most successful female entrepreneurs. With her second book recently published and a @Netflix series on the way in 2017 we think there's plenty more to come from this #GIRLBOSS yet, and we're looking forward to it. This is one of our favorite quotes of hers - simple and to the point. Prints and more available in a ridiculous number of color variants on our website www.startup.market (link in bio).
