This grand building is the first steel frame high-rise building built in #lakeland #florida and found at 129 S. Kentucky Ave. Once 1 of the hottest addresses in the downtown area, there was a high demand by doctors, lawyers & other professionals to office there and it continued to hold status as the most prestigious office location for 40 years. Watson Clinic was founded here and during WWII, Lakeland's famed Lodwick School of Aeronautics once had their administrative offices here. Dominant in Lakeland’s skyline, the building’s been referred to as everything-the unimaginative "10-story building" to an official-sounding "Broderick Building” however most know it’s as the #marblearcade. The building dates back to the 1920s during times the future looked unusually bright thanks to the rosy glow of the Florida land boom, when hotels sprang up in downtowns across Florida, like the Terrace Hotel and New Florida Hotel found in Lakeland. The Marble Arcade was different because developers E.J. Sparks and M.C. Talley wanted to appeal to successful businessman, so they engaged a popular Florida architect, Roy A. Benjamin of Jacksonville, who also designed the Palace Theater also found on Kentucky Ave., but also numerous theaters across the state. #popashcreekpreserve - Found nestled in a rural, somewhat hard to find area and situated in NE #LeeCounty, the preserve was awarded 2 trophies: #10 for Top rated Park in North Fort Myers & #4 for Hidden Gems - The park is in located in #northfortmyers and consists of over 307 acres with over six miles of hiking and equestrian trails and is currently maintenanced by the county and continues water treatments to this day. Part of the Conservation 20/20 Program, established in 1996 by voters passing a referendum, property owners to purchase environmentally sensitive land for conservation and ecosystem protection, are taxed. Purchased for just over $1.5m in the summer of 2003, the county, and the Dept. of Natural Resources reshaped the surfaces by creating a filter marsh, utilizing ponds already onsite and created a more natural wetland and dry prairie environment, but also reduces flooding in the adjacent watersheds and removes nutrients from the water, protecting neighborhoods nearby, but also consisting of other preserves and large tracts of land, which help to move rain and slow moving water, southward, in a natural direction. There’s dry areas (mesic) and wet areas (hydric) with resident wildlife as American alligators, river otters, blue herons, turtles, wading birds and many others. Prior to the state’s transformation, the land had seen hydrologic modifications and land uses such as soil & rock mining, agriculture and roads for moving cars through neighborhoods. In the ‘60’s, the State of #Florida purchased the land and turned it into the Caloosahatchee Regional Park. The park is managed by #LeeCounty and a #pineflatwoods #scruboak #cypressswamps and #oakhammock #park spanning over 768 acres, with over 20 miles is dedicated to hiking, mountain biking and equestrian trails. On-site you’ll find picnic pavilions, a lodge, barbeque grills, kayaking, park programs, a river overlook, a fishing pier and the ability to camp with tents. The #trail and trail loops located south of CR 78 are for #hikers only, with the north side trails for #mountainbiking #hiking and #equestrianuse Instrumental in the maintenance of the trail system is provided by the #CaloosaSaddleClub and the #FloridaMudcutters #mountainbike club. The course of the Caloosahatche River was altered in the ‘50s so workers moved the muddy land to the northern bank of the river, found in East Lee County. Unknown at the time, they helped set the groundwork for a future recreational treasure. The Northern part of the park is 400 acres of hard-packed clay, with 15-foot ridges in spots, which is covered with exotic grasses and trees. #cassadaga (#Seneca Indian #definition : "Water beneath the rocks") located in #volusiacounty this small, unincorporated community can be found just north of Deltona. Colby attended summer Spiritualist Camp meetings in Lily Dale, New York, adjacent to Cassadaga, New York, and lended its name to this Florida community. Most know Cassadaga for it’s many #psychics and #mediums - which is consequently, named the #psychiccapitaloftheworld — #georgepcolby of Pike, New York, was a trance medium who traveled to many different states, performing readings and seances and he worked with several spirit guides giving him knowledge. One of his spirit guides was a Native American named Seneca. Colby during a seance in Lake Mills, Iowa who had manifested and instructed him to travel south to Florida, where he eventually arrived at the Blue Springs Landing, near Orange City. According to Colby, the area that Seneca had led him to was the same area that he saw in the seance. He arrived in #florida 1875 and founded the Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp. On December 18, 1894, the charter was granted to form The Southern Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp Meeting Association and on January 3, 1895, Colby signed a thirty-five acre warranty deed to the association. Colby was referred to as the "seer of spiritualism.” Later, the association expanded into the current, fifty-seven acres after receiving additional acreage. However, this is a #beautiful little spot in #tice which is in the #fortmyers area (I love Fort Myers and spent loads of time there) #florida #historyfacts #historic #railroad Now called the #seminolegulfrailway it’s most popularly known for the #murdermysterydinnertrain however, the main line incrementally came to existence in the late 1800s and early 20th century. The northernmost section of along with the Arcadia yard and CSX line was originally built by the Charlotte Harbor and Northern Railway in 1907 until 1910, the Charlotte Harbor and Northern Railway (acquired by Seaboard Air Line Railroad in 1926) historically extended from Arcadia south to Boca Grande and the line from the Arcadia yard southeast along Pine Street was the Charlotte Harbor and Northern's connector track to the Florida Southern Railway. From that point, Seminole Gulf continues south along the former Florida Southern Railway (subsidiary of Henry Plant's railroad systems) to Punta Gorda. This segment is the oldest segment of the Seminole Gulf line; built in 1886 and was the southernmost segment of the Florida Southern's Charlotte Harbor Division (originated in Bartow). In 1984, the original Florida Southern route, north of Arcadia (which ran past the historic Arcadia passenger depot) was removed. On July 24, 1886, the line's first train arrived to Punta Gorda.
