running with the hotdogs analogy; you can't trust the label assuring you it's one thing vs another, it's unhealthy as shit and not just in the ways you think it is, the people who profit off you eating them are a danger to the community they sell the hotdogs to, and the factories that mass produce hotdog ingredients are poisoning the environment

I fully agree with that! I realize my last post was a bit contradictory and meandering, but my main point is an irritation with people claiming something is factually ancient when there is plenty of information to disprove that point.
It's so frustrating to see someone on here that looks interesting, but then I check out their blog and it's like oh you give money to questionable organizations and follow a diety invented in recent years that's been thoroughly disproven as anything more than that :(

is it potentially controversial to suggest ketchup would be a perfectly good ingredient for protection magic in a pinch?

Like, I don't judge. I fell for Mesperyian hook, line, and sinker when I was first getting started, to the extent where I was planning to get a tattoo of her and was doing art etc, but luckily I learned quick enough.
The current tell-tale fake I see all too often is Elen of the Ways. This piece sources a lot of history on how she was created by Caroline Wise in the 1980's:
Particularly, it gives her direct quotes on how she "encountered" this supposed diety in her mind, and how she named it herself. She is considered the preeminent source on the matter because she's the one forging the fictitious connections to things that already existed, a la Margaret Murray.
There is nothing that actually connects her to the Elen of Welsh Mythology, which is another common claim, and no deer to be found.
I guess if someone acknowledged her as a new creation and worked with that creation as an egregore - an entity created by worship/psychic contributions of followers/however you qualify a "source", but I have yet to encounter anyone working with "her" that makes such a distinction.
My issue persists similarly to my issue with Wicca: there is a disregard for history that trips into disrespect for the source that so many people claim to worship. We should learn where the things we work with come from, even if that changes the ways we work with them or even perceive them on a basic level. I'm no reconstructionist, as I've said here many times, but even then, I have seen the intense importance there is in learning how to spot colonization within the limited sources we have at our disposal.
As always, question everything.

Walking with the Horned One (Cernunnos) is primarily a journey of faith. If you believe he is watching and guiding you, then he is. When we commune, the Horned One and I, there is little language beyond our greetings and farewells. He always says hello when he's present and goodbye when he leaves. In between, he uses silent gestures, animal noises, and body language to communicate, whereas I talk. His various reactions to my words tell me which messages I am receiving are him and which are my ego. It is a moment if belief and trust. Not certainty.

Ok, loves, so we've all got the message that joking about suicide is bad for your mental health. Now we need to get on "joking that the planet/all of humanity has no future" is bad for societal health/encouraging resistance to bad shit."
