Sunny, a scrapper and her father’s daughter till the end, has held a secret in her teeth so long she’s worried her jaw might just snap. She’ll be alright if she can fulfill her father’s dying wish— that is, if she can make it that far.

Shui, yet another bandit out in the Wastes, has lived a kicked-dog life so long he can no longer see beyond the boot. Between an employer who only sees him as fodder and a boss that only sees him as trouble, the boot’s coming down one way or the other.

Xal, a wandering gunslinger, should be dead— but that ain’t nothing new.

It’s a fight for survival down in the derelict depths of an abandoned ‘Fore-Folk lab, between the horrid technology of the past, the pack of bandits pointing guns at Sunny and Xal, and the ghosts haunting the very environment they’re in— and if none of those do them in, the secrets held between them just might.

These stories center around the folks who've been surviving since: farmers, mediums, doppelgangers, ghosts. Y'know, regular folk and the dinosaurs they ride, living in the shadows of the ruins the 'Fore Folks left behind.

Each story is written to be self contained, so Deepest Canyon is a great place to start!

Slush Readers Wanted!

On the topic of High Stakes and Bloody Business, we’ve received 50 story submissions so far and 37 of those still need to be read and evaluated. I’m expecting a lot more submissions to come in over the next couple months, and the slush pile is already much more than I can tackle on my own. So, I’m opening up an application for volunteer slush pile readers! Slush reader positions are low-key, low time commitment volunteer opportunities that let you read and evaluate manuscripts for publication. You can apply here. Magnanimous Moonrise and Savage Sunset by @not-a-space-alien is now available in paperback!

In this unique dueling story structure, the same events are described from two different perspectives.   Savage Sunset: Alexis and Ariana are partners and vampire hunters, trying to protect as many people as they can from the horrors of a world where vampires see humans as cattle, fair game for being snatched up and taken home as food.  Magnanimous Moonrise: Valen is a vampire on a mission…one which unfortunately puts him at odds with vampire hunters, who aren’t happy about such a creature being so deep within their territory. 

The paperback is a tête-bêche (double sided), so you can read Savage Sunset, then flip over the book to read Magnanimous Moonrise! The only difference between this paperback and the special edition we offered via Backerkit is that this paperback has a barcode on the back (see below). What kinds of stories (ie. dynamics, topics, themes) can we expect from the vampire anthology, considering the stories you've already approved? (If you have approved any. I'm just assuming you have since you mentioned sending rejections in your newsletter!)

We've accepted a variety of stories! Lots of misunderstood vampire whumpees, some bloodbag/thrall type whumpees, and a lot of twists and turns and ambiguous endings.

I really hope this doesn't come across as rude, but I couldn't see anything about a GenAI policy on your site? Generally, it seems small presses are against it, but unfortunately I've come across a few who allow it for either writing or cover art. Would love to know your thoughts. Thank you! :)

We have a strict anti-gen AI policy. Generative AI may not be used to partially or completely produce writing or art for any WPP project. Authors/Artists who violate this policy will be blacklisted from all future WPP projects.
