How to Make Your Characters Almost Cry
Tears are powerful, but do you know what's more impactful? The struggle to hold them back. This post is for all your hard-hearted stoic characters who'd never shed a tear before another, and aims to help you make them breakdown realistically.
The Physical Signs of Holding Back Tears
Heavy Eyelids, Heavy Heart Your character's eyelids feel weighted, as if the tears themselves are dragging them down. Their vision blurs—not quite enough to spill over, but enough to remind them of the dam threatening to break.
The Involuntary Sniffle They sniffle, not because their nose is running, but because their body is desperately trying to regulate itself, to suppress the wave of emotion threatening to take over.
Burning Eyes Their eyes sting from the effort of restraint, from the battle between pride and vulnerability. If they try too hard to hold back, the whites of their eyes start turning red, a telltale sign of the tears they've refused to let go.
The Trembling Lips Like a child struggling not to cry, their lips quiver. The shame of it fuels their determination to stay composed, leading them to clench their fists, grip their sleeves, or dig their nails into the nearest surface—anything to regain control.
The Fear of Blinking Closing their eyes means surrender. The second their lashes meet, the memories, the pain, the heartbreak will surge forward, and the tears will follow. So they force themselves to keep staring—at the floor, at a blank wall, at anything that won’t remind them of why they’re breaking.
The Coping Mechanisms: Pretending It’s Fine
A Steady Gaze & A Deep Breath To mask the turmoil, they focus on a neutral object, inhale slowly, and steel themselves. If they can get through this one breath, they can get through the next.
Turning Away to Swipe at Their Eyes When they do need to wipe their eyes, they do it quickly, casually, as if brushing off a speck of dust rather than wiping away the proof of their emotions.
Masking the Pain with a Different Emotion Anger, sarcasm, even laughter—any strong emotion can serve as a shield. A snappy response, a bitter chuckle, a sharp inhale—each is a carefully chosen defence against vulnerability.
Why This Matters
Letting your character fight their tears instead of immediately breaking down makes the scene hit harder. It shows their internal struggle, their resistance, and their need to stay composed even when they’re crumbling.
This is written based off of personal experience as someone who goes through this cycle a lot (emotional vulnerability who?) and some inspo from other books/articles

One of the key elements that make a story memorable is its characters. Whether they’re heroes or villains, the people we create in our writing need to feel unique, complex, and alive. It was a part of writing that I struggled with the most at the beginning. How do you make sure your characters stand out from the crowd? How do you give them a voice and presence that’s distinct and unforgettable?
Give Them Unique Voices
One of the easiest ways to make your characters feel distinct is to give each of them a unique voice. A character’s way of speaking—the words they use, the rhythm of their sentences, their tone—says a lot about them. A witty, sarcastic character will speak differently from someone who’s more reserved and thoughtful. You can achieve this by paying attention to how they express themselves, not just through dialogue but through their internal monologues as well. A character who’s quick-tempered might use short, sharp sentences, while someone more introspective might speak in longer, more reflective phrases. The key is consistency. Once you establish a character's way of speaking, try to keep it consistent throughout your story.
Focus on Their Backstory and Motivations
Every character is shaped by their past, even if you don’t fully show it on page. A character who grew up in a strict, loving household will behave differently than someone who had to survive in a rough, unpredictable enviromnent. You don’t need to go into every detail, but having a clear sense of where your character came from—and what they want in the present—will help guide how they act in different situations. Their goals, fears, and desires should reflect their decisions and relationships, making them feel more like real.
Give Them Distinct Physical Traits
Physical traits can help differentiate characters, but they should go beyond just eye color or height. Think about how a character’s appearance might reflect their personality or history. Maybe a character with messy hair and old clothes is someone who’s always in a rush or doesn’t care about their appearance. Perhaps a character who is meticulously groomed is someone who values control and order. Little details like this can communicate something about their character without you needing to say much. However, avoid making these physical traits stereotypes—make sure they reflect the essence of your character, not just visual clichés. (for the love of god stay away from the term orbs)
Let Them Have Quirks and Habits
The little things can go a long way in making a character feel real. Does your character always hum a certain tune when they’re nervous? Do they tap their fingers when they’re deep in thought? Maybe they have a habit of checking their phone obsessively, or they’re always keeping an eye of their loved ones around them. These quirks don’t need to be extreme or over-the-top, but they should feel like part of who the character is. Quirks can be small behaviors that reveal something about how the character thinks or feels, adding depth and individuality.
Use Their Relationships to Define Them
A character’s relationships with others play a huge role in how they’re perceived. How a character interacts with their friends, family, and even strangers can say a lot about who they are. Maybe your character is the life of the party with their friends but acts shy and withdrawn around authority. Maybe they’re confrontational and hot-headed with others but soft-spoken when talking to animals. These shifts in behavior show different sides of a character, making them feel more distinct. Additionally, relationships are often the best way to highlight a character’s growth—how they change based on their experiences with others can make them more dynamic and engaging.
Give Them Flaws and Vulnerabilities
No one is perfect, and neither should your characters be. Flaws and vulnerabilities not only make your characters feel more human but also give them room to grow throughout the story. Maybe your character is overly self-critical, or they struggle with trust issues. Perhaps they have a tendency to lie to protect themselves or they’re stubborn to a fault. These imperfections make characters relatable and provide opportunities for conflict and development. Flaws also allow you to play with how characters change over time. Do they learn to overcome their weaknesses? Do their flaws lead to their downfall? It’s up to you, but either way, giving your characters room to grow through their flaws adds another layer to their distinctiveness.
Avoid Making Them Too Predictable
While consistency in character traits is important, it’s also crucial to avoid making your characters so predictable that they feel boring. People are complex, and so should your characters be. Let them surprise readers by acting in unexpected ways. Maybe your tough, no-nonsense character suddenly shows kindness to someone they barely know, or a seemingly shy character makes a bold move when it matters most. These moments of complexity help break the mold and keep readers engaged.
These are just a few tips of mine for writing characters. Hope they help! :)

Overused Words in Writing & How to Avoid Them
We’ve all got our comfort words—those trusty adjectives, verbs, or phrases we lean on like a crutch. But when certain words show up too often, they lose their impact, leaving your writing feeling repetitive or uninspired.
1. “Very” and Its Cousins
Why It’s Overused: It’s easy to tack on “very” for emphasis, but it’s vague and doesn’t pull its weight.
Instead of: “She was very tired.” Try: “She was exhausted.” / “She dragged her feet like lead weights.”
💡 Tip: Use precise, vivid descriptions rather than vague intensifiers.
2. “Looked” and “Saw”
Why It’s Overused: It’s functional but flat, and it often tells instead of shows.
Instead of: “He looked at her in disbelief.” Try: “His eyebrows shot up, his lips parting as if words had failed him.”
💡 Tip: Focus on body language or sensory details instead of relying on generic verbs.
3. “Suddenly”
Why It’s Overused: It’s often used to create surprise, but it tells readers how to feel instead of letting the scene deliver the shock.
Instead of: “Suddenly, the door slammed shut.” Try: “The door slammed shut, the sound ricocheting through the empty room.”
💡 Tip: Let the action or pacing create urgency without needing to announce it.
4. “Said” (When Overdone or Misused)
Why It’s Overused: While “said” is often invisible and functional, using it in every dialogue tag can feel robotic.
Instead of: “I can’t believe it,” she said. “Me neither,” he said. Try: Replace with an action: “I can’t believe it.” She ran a hand through her hair, pacing. “Me neither.” He leaned against the counter, arms crossed.
💡 Tip: Don’t ditch “said” entirely; just mix it up with context clues or action beats.
5. “Felt”
Why It’s Overused: It’s a shortcut that tells instead of showing emotions.
Instead of: “She felt nervous.” Try: “Her palms slicked with sweat, and she couldn’t stop her leg from bouncing.”
💡 Tip: Let readers infer emotions through sensory details or behavior.
6. “Really” and “Actually”
Why It’s Overused: They add little to your sentences and can dilute the impact of stronger words.
Instead of: “I really don’t think that’s a good idea.” Try: “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
💡 Tip: If a sentence works without these words, cut them.
7. “Walked” or “Ran”
Why It’s Overused: These are go-to movement words, but they can feel bland when used repeatedly.
Instead of: “He walked into the room.” Try: “He strolled in like he owned the place.” / “He shuffled in, avoiding everyone’s eyes.”
💡 Tip: Use verbs that convey mood, speed, or attitude.
8. “Just”
Why It’s Overused: It sneaks into sentences unnecessarily, weakening your prose.
Instead of: “I just wanted to say I’m sorry.” Try: “I wanted to say I’m sorry.”
💡 Tip: Delete “just” unless it adds essential nuance.
9. “Thought”
Why It’s Overused: It tells readers what a character is thinking instead of showing it through internal dialogue or action.
Instead of: “She thought he might be lying.” Try: “His story didn’t add up. The timelines didn’t match, and he wouldn’t meet her eyes.”
💡 Tip: Immerse readers in the character’s perspective without announcing their thoughts.
10. “Nice” and Other Vague Adjectives
Why It’s Overused: It’s generic and doesn’t give readers a clear picture.
Instead of: “He was a nice guy.” Try: “He always remembered her coffee order and held the door open, even when his arms were full.”
💡 Tip: Show qualities through actions instead of relying on vague descriptors.
Final Tips for Avoiding Overused Words:
1. Use a thesaurus wisely: Swap overused words for synonyms, but stay true to your character’s voice and the scene’s tone.
2. Read your work aloud: You’ll catch repetitive patterns and clunky phrases more easily.
3. Edit in layers: Focus on eliminating overused words during your second or third pass, not your first draft.

Awesome
I'm opening Pandora's box I want to know everything you want to share about Hans? I'm morbidly intrigued.
This has been sitting in my asks for about... A quarter of a year? Yeah, something like that. Let's just say he does not like being talked about (and I get a bad case of freeze-the-fuck-up whenever I try to say a word about him) so let's see how this goes:
Okay so here's the rundown on this guy
He/him (though if you taught him the concept of gender he might spontaneously combust from 'oh my god I don't think I'm cis')
Aroace. He does not know what that word means however.
Forest Spirit, born to the clan leader of the Ko, raised to be their clan leader (despite the fact that it's incredibly rare for men to be rulers in spirit culture)
Best friend: Dare I say one of his guards? He and Fala have something similar to a bestie vibe (after approximately 500 years of him picking on her)
Partner: Hash (in the sense that she is the person to hold him when he has nightmares and he is the one to rescue her when the consequences of her actions get too bad)
Honestly? A massive bitch. Such. A. Massive. Bitch.
So what's his history?
He grew up a fairly normal kid (by spirit standards), though rather friendless. That all changed when he found a ghost girl who mysteriously fell through the roof of a local storeroom. (There's a story about it. Go read it here)
Unfortunately for him, spirits hate ghosts. And so he killed and ate his parents to save her. Like a normal person. Because he is So Normal.
Anyways that automatically made him boss of the Ko clan, which he rather successfully led until the Godhuntress killed everyone (including his ghost friend). Now, said ghost friend turned out to be the Goddess of Dreams, having had lied to him for more or less his entire adult life. Unfortunately, he happens to be stubbornly loyal (see: Hash causing him no end of trouble) and refused to abandon her. That led to him accidentally witnessing the Godhuntress' secret to being so powerful, a secret he was determined to use against her.
So after all his people died, he ran off to the mountains as part one of his epic journey for revenge. There, he killed the current Spirit Empress, ate her (see a pattern?) and made himself Spirit Emperor.
Eventually, the Spirit Empress kills herself, leaving him to seethe quietly in a corner. That's when he meets Hash, who sneaks into his palace and attempts to rob him blind. Fortunately for both of them, Hans-el happens to find it absolutely hilarious and tells him he's free to stick around. The two of them hit it off really well, and they basically fall into a QPR (though neither of them call it that). People generally refer to them as each other's boy/girlfriend, something he absolutely hates.
Fun facts:
His name is very much a mimicry of a human one, to the point that its spelling is literally just a phonetic translation
Favourite foods are raw meat and chocolate chip cookies (but never together) Doesn't drink at all.
Has run away from his job (a bad habit Hash taught him) and done various things, including adopting a random human child and raising her, owning a mysterious cornershop, and starting a civil wad
Considered extremely liberal by his courtiers due to his pro-ghost stance
An excellent singer (due to forester culture, he had his vocal cords altered as a child)
Threatened to show up naked to his coronation because he didn't like the style of his clothing
Attempted to assassinate the Fae Queen after she called him short (the captain of his guard found him and wrestled him away)
Swears exclusively in his own name because it's funny to him
What's he like? Like actually, really like?
Let's pretend for a minute that you're a random ass servant in his palace. You'll know exactly 3 things about him: 1. He will have you executed and eaten for lunch if you upset him, 2. Ignore the weird ass shapeshifter that hangs around, that's his favourite, 3. He has a very strange and specific sense of humour.
Now, on any given day, he is gonna wake up approximately an hour after dawn, pull up in a dress and crown, attend to the morning's complaints, eat some poor soul alive for brunch, spend half an hour staring at his incredibly extensive collection of antiques, bother Fala and/or another guard, deal with more petitions/complaints, have talks with some official or another, invite them to dinner and gleefully remind them why people fear him (read: eating some poor soul alive) and then gallivanting off to bed with Hash, whereupon he will suffer nightmares of the worst degree.
He also enjoys playing tricks on the people of the palace at night when he can't sleep. This has included silently moving everyone out of their beds so that the gardeners woke up on the roof and the excavators (because he lives under a mountain) wake up in the guest halls. Now nobody can do jack shit about this because he's their boss, so they just have to pretend nothing happened while he sits there oh-so-regal like he totally didn't just fuck with them.
He doesn't come across as a prankster, that's the thing. Etiquette and a deep sense of superiority have made it so that he behaves like he's just an asshole. Underneath it all, however, lies a love for ruining other people's days, and a love for when people try to ruin his day. While he can't just let his assassins go (he tried, the captain of his guard told him it was a bad look), he does enjoy giving would-be thieves a boon, just because he can. Hash asked for a date with him, which flattered him to no end.
Appearance?
I don't have many picrews of him (see: freezing up whenever I try to write about him), but I do know what he looks like inside and out.
Because of a slight error in his vocal cord surgery, his throat has a shallow scar that he hides by wearing high-necked tops. He also loves gilded bell sleeves and wraparound skirts, though he will occasionally pull up in a turtleneck and slacks if Hash insists on dragging him out to human civilisation. He does own a veil, but he uses it exclusively when dealing with elves. Oh, and he has a pair of platforms that he goes nowhere without.
He's actually fairly average for a spirit, coming in at about 130cm/4'3" and 1.5kg/3lbs (yes 1.5 was not a typo. Spirits are 90% air). His hair is black and slightly wavy, reaching his neck like most foresters, his skin vaguely translucent, and his eyes bright yellow. He wears the markings for a forester leader on his cheekbones (though nobody understands what they mean).
And yeah, that's about it! Congrats on being the first person ever to get me to talk about the fucker who doesn't ever leave my brain? (I wish I was kidding. I need to evict him. Asap.)

Ooh, this looks fun
Though the minor problem is that I have like 4 OCs soooooooo, yeah
I’ll schedule this post for like a month or two in the future and if I have more OCs then I will answer
Send this to someone who has OCs
Most likely...
to get lost
to kiss and tell
to 'forget' to text back
to know the lyrics to every song you play
to not realize that they are being flirted with
to lose their keys repeatedly
to apologize first
to leave a party early
to get lost in a place they already know
to cheat while playing a game
to survive in the wild
to sing when they think they are alone
to be someone's wingman/woman
to plan a romantic date
to start blushing
to get arrested
to talk during a movie
to say I love you first
to be a cuddler
to forget about someone's birthday
to always wear the same outfit
to not be able to keep a secret
to defend their friends in a fight
to drag the other's to the dance floor
to fall asleep first at a sleepover

This looks fun
Starting us off we have Xes
Xes is smart but also very stupid.
Yep, this metal head can learn how to traverse dimensions and can make computer systems that seem like utter witchcraft (which they kinda are) but can ze figure out where to put the gem with a gem shaped hole in front of them? Absolutely not, don’t be ridiculous
Xes had an emo phase.
Had? No no, they’re still in it, just look at there jet black hood, cloak and other garments
Xes is not allowed to drink energy drinks.
I know that ze’re an android and caffeine wouldn’t really work but fuck that, all I can imagine now is Xes vibrating aggressively and just darting around the town at breakneck speeds, maybe the caffeine overload broke some of their code that limited how fast they can go
Xes has one, very simple word that they cannot figure out how to pronounce.
Yeah definitely
Ok next, Rosie
Rosie can kill you in an instant, but wont.
Yeah probably, as I said in my documentation “She believes every problem can be solved by being peaceful and civil is always the best way of dealing with problems even if that problem is running at her with with a battle-axe in hand”
Rosie wears Hello Kitty socks
Yeah that fits
Rosie is awful with technology and doesn't know how to use a smart phone.
Well seeing as she lives in a dimension where they don’t exist that kinda makes sense
Rosie forgets to eat sometimes.
Yeah… she’ll remind others to eat but not herself
Moving on, The Observant
The Observant got hit by a bus once.
Yeah no, this motherfucker is constantly paying attention to anything and everything around them, if they did get hit, they would go flying sure but I think the bus would be damaged a lot
The Observant desperately needs a hug but doesn't know it and refuses to ask for one.
Yep, just yep
The Observant sucks at saying tongue twisters.
I just picture this incredibly formal being, perfectly composed saying every word perfectly and then just endlessly stumbling over their words trying to say it
The Observant is in your house.
Oh, that’s fun, time to go quiz the fuck out of them
And finally, Leander
Leander is tumblr famous.
Yeah, if this dork ever got access to tumblr I would not be surprised
Leander is a horrible liar.
Sort of, it depends, like sometimes he will be the smoothest liar on the planet other times you have to wonder if he’s trying to lie or if he’s trying to make it as obvious as possible
Leander always has a sword on them.
Ok but this is just straight up true
Leander killed Princess Diana.
As funny as that would be, I don’t think he would
And that’s kinda all of my OCs, I don’t have many because I kinda only made my first one by accident and then I gave that one a friend and then I made a story with those two and we need the other main ish characters and that’s where the other two showed up
I’ll tag people @thewritingdragonelf @phoenixradiant @ratedn
OC Headcannon tag!
Looks like everyone else is doing it, so I guess I'll jump on! Thanks @illarian-rambling, @theink-stainedfolk, @fortunatetragedy, @willtheweaver, @beloveddawn-blog and whoever else tagged me :)
Rules: use this headcanon generator to generate some headcanons for your OCs! How accurate are they?
Let's start with Luna!
Luna almost drank the lethal dosage of caffine once.
You know what, I believe that. She's got the self-control of a feral squirrel.
Luna has a mary sue oc.
If she has any, they would definitely all be Mary Sues :)
Luna is oblivous to any and all romantic interest someone may show them.
She might be aromantic, but she's not blind. She'd know. (And be deeply disgusted.)
Next up: Iraela :)
Iraela is pansexual.
Lmao no. She's the straightest straight to ever straight.
Iraela knows fnaf lore.
This does psychic damage upon reading, but I have to agree. In a world in which fnaf lore is available, she would definitely be a fan.
Iraela likes to sing at 4 in the morning. Their neighbors hate them.
Also absolutely true, if she had neighbours to annoy.
And to round them all up: Katherine! (Oh god I still haven't written the epilogue for apns)
Katherine has been to prison.
Depends on what you count as prison, I guess. She'd sure say her home was a prison.
Katherine does intricate and expensive cosplays.
Again, depends on what you count as cosplay. (Technically, she's been running around in the world's most intricate cosplay of a teenage girl, so...)
Katherine has one, very simple word that they cannot figure out how to pronounce.
Absolutely not. She's too pedantic to allow that to occur. She probably has like 5 dictionaries memorised just in case.
Tagging @drchenquill, @mundanemoongirl, @possiblylisle, @paeliae-occasionally and anyone else interested!

Two androids with polar opposite personalities are working, one gets abducted to a different dimension, tries to get back home, <spoiler which I’m not going to say> and learns magic
There is more but that’s not planned just yet
@thewritingdragonelf @phoenixradiant
Uhhhh yeah I don’t know if any of my other friends have writing blogs
Writers, tell me about your story in the dumbest way possible
I’ll go first:
Superhero princesses save the world with the help of that one straight white guy who’s just happy to be here, couldn’t have done it without the fortune of a white woman defying all the odds by deciding against a gender reveal party

Sorry the first one is incorrect, it should be “Any sentence can and will be a paragraph”
Like I genuinely used to use more commas and words for joining two sentences together than every other special character, I mean like full stops, exclamation marks, question marks, quotation marks, brackets, the whole lot, and that’s not from lists and such, I just used a single full stop at the end of paragraphs and an ungodly amount of commas to cram everything in there, hell in this post I haven’t even used a full stop yet
I’m somewhat better now because I read stuff out loud if there is a suspicious lack of punctuation and to see when I need to take breaths
Disclaimer these are just a small sampling of some possible writer traits I’ve noticed either in myself or in fics I read. Also consider a rb for sample size !
