“That’s scarier than any other part of the process. It’s just so many unnatural elements in that room. I grew up a very anxious kid and not very socially apt in a lot of ways. I was like, If I can do this, I can be a ninja conversationally outside of that. I said yes to everything. I wanted to just do as much as possible, no matter how embarrassing or humiliatingly clownish it was. I was like, It doesn’t matter, because I just need to be able to not treat the camera like a villain and treat it like a friend. There’s so much blackmail material out there of me where I was just trying to figure it out.”

“We wanted to make sure it wasn’t so compartmentalized, that it was always clear that it was one person. It was never this code-switching, or this kind of lily pad–hopping to a completely different person. They are all qualities and parts of one person.”

“I always had this big dream about, ‘How can I use what I learned in my social work studies in film, and tell a story that makes a difference and touches people?’ I think [Thunderbolts*] is the perfect manifestation of that.”

“I think people are maybe expecting just another version of Suicide Squad. But the story felt different. There was a flip of what people expected it to be.”

“Bob serves an interesting purpose, and I was discovering that along the way. He is, in some ways, a vessel to learn about how these other outcasts deal with pressure and rejection and death and loneliness. How do they deal with a bizarre problem like this?”

“The Void is the dark half of a hero called Sentry, who has the power of a million exploding suns, but suffers from more Achilles’ heels than he has actual heels, including crippling anxiety and mental-health issues. And the fact that he could, at any time, unleash the Void. This doesn’t seem to be a case of people putting two and two together and making Sentry. Sentry’s human alter-ego is Robert Reynolds, and in Thunderbolts*, Lewis Pullman plays a mysterious character called Bob, whom the Thunderbolts stumble upon during their journey. Bob is a gentle soul, a good soul, a lost soul. But is he hiding a darker secret?”
