“He’s very malleable and easily influenced because he hasn’t had a real, strong, reliable source of love in his life. There’s a contrast between being this all-powerful being and then having your greatest weakness and your main Achilles’ heel be your own self.”

“Once we were on set and we were moving from shame room to shame room [in the film’s third act], I realized the power of the symbolism and getting to visualize these labyrinths of anxiety and trauma we subject ourselves to. It really uses the format incredibly intelligently because so much of what we’re talking about takes place in our minds. Wyatt Russell [who plays John Walker] said something brilliant the other day. He said, ‘A lot of Marvel is about the exploration of outer space, and this is the exploration of inner space, of the mind, which is just as limitless as outer space is.’ I thought that was a good way to frame it.”
LEWIS PULLMAN — about the visual metaphor for mental health by taking the characters traverse a series of ‘halls of shame’ that confront them with their own insecurities and failures.

LEWIS PULLMAN — about his craziest day on set filming thunderbolts*
“I mean, that final sequence in the lab where Bob fights The Void was something like I’ve never done before in my life.”
“Because it was, you know, to differentiate the fighting style between The Void and Bob was really difficult and I was so lucky to have work with this stunt double Alec Back who is just so awesome in every way and such a good buddy and was so along for the ride and so invested.”
“And so we kind of had so many conversations about the body language of how we’re going to differentiate. We wanted Bob to look like he was like an eight-year-old and you know on a playground like he has no experience like how he throws these punches.”
“But then there’s a wildness and there’s a feralness to where it goes to. And then actually shooting that, you know, I had to shoot both sides of the fight and then Alec, you know, was standing in for the opposite and you don’t just get to do one part of it the whole way through, you know, you have to do it a bunch of different ways depending on what the setups are.”
“And keeping the choreography in your mind about whether I’m getting punched or punching is was like so disorienting.”
“It was like it fried my brain. I was like two of the hardest days where I was just like and then also going back and forth in between those different styles and the body lenguage of them and keeping in mind who and changing your clothes over, you know, hundred times throughout the course of the day.”
“And then all while like, you know, all these incredible actors are there tied up and they’re in the room and so wanting to be and feeling that pressure of like this has to work.”

“That’s scarier than any other part of the process. It’s just so many unnatural elements in that room. I grew up a very anxious kid and not very socially apt in a lot of ways. I was like, If I can do this, I can be a ninja conversationally outside of that. I said yes to everything. I wanted to just do as much as possible, no matter how embarrassing or humiliatingly clownish it was. I was like, It doesn’t matter, because I just need to be able to not treat the camera like a villain and treat it like a friend. There’s so much blackmail material out there of me where I was just trying to figure it out.”

“We wanted to make sure it wasn’t so compartmentalized, that it was always clear that it was one person. It was never this code-switching, or this kind of lily pad–hopping to a completely different person. They are all qualities and parts of one person.”

“I always had this big dream about, ‘How can I use what I learned in my social work studies in film, and tell a story that makes a difference and touches people?’ I think [Thunderbolts*] is the perfect manifestation of that.”
