okayyy i’m actually super into this cover design

i do own another copy which i’ll probs show here sometime - hardcover, published in 2 volumes, v pretty with gold leaf pages & illustrations (!!!). it’s the wraxall translation, which i don’t find impossible to read, but i was looking for a more modern one as well as the whole book in one place, and the extensive foot & endnotes in this are what sold me. because sometimes, when dealing with the 19th-century french political landscape, ur girl needs Context.

i think it's really interesting how the us education system goes out of its way to drill into your head that the cold war was a fight of "democracy vs communism" , like that was repeated every time I learned about the cold war in school

and that. literally makes zero sense because a) communism is a primarily economic and social system while democracy is a governmental system; they're completely mutually exclusive like a democratic communist state is entirely possible and b) the US was NOT fighting for democracy in the cold war, they were only fighting against communism. The US literally overthrew Guatemala's first democratically elected president just because they thought he was communist (and due to lobbying from a fruit company yes really)

And US schools heavily emphasize that the cold war was "democracy vs communism" but they don't ever talk about WW2 as democracy vs facism even though it objectively was.

And when learning about the second red scare and mccarthyism, it's always framed as "these poor people who werent even communists were being falsely accused!!!!" and not "people were being thrown in jail for expressing their constitutional rights to speech and opinion" like yes, some people who werent communists were caught in the crosshairs of this witch hunt but THAT'S NOT THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE HERE????

It's just.... really interesting how much anti-communist propaganda is force fed to literal children. This is why most Americans are so pro-capitalist. We were literally taught it in school.

I’m fine with annoying fandoms, I usually don’t really mind the twelve year olds obsessed with Hamilton. Because we should encourage being passionate about a subject, encourage writing cringe fanfiction. Yes it is annoying but they’re children, don’t judge a child for having fun. some modern les mis hc's !!

-gavroche shoplifts, as he puts it, for the greater good. his friends have come to expect unreasonably extravagant birthday/xmas gifts. he's never been caught

-out of the amis, éponine and feuilly are practically nocturnal, preferring to work night shifts

-after cosette goes to university, valjean starts an nonprofit aimed at helping former prisoners re-enter society. cosette will drop by, seemingly at random, always with a bundle of hand-sewn clothes or a batch of cookies

-jehan has an extensive outdoor herb garden, which he likes to sit and think in. he claims the "aroma gives him inspiration"

-almost no one knows that grantaire dropped out of culinary school, and that he's still a really good chef. gavroche and azelma know. when ép is gone, they stay in r's apartment, eating and watching movies she doesn't approve of

-as the token med students of les amis, combeferre and joly have been asked about minor/obscure symptoms so many times they made a google form

-and enjolras fills it out one day all "short of breath" "heart palpitations" "facial redness"

-...and ferre and joly are silently losing it as they wait for grantaire to show up

-enjolras decorates everything he owns with relevant quotes. his car keys say "give me liberty, or give me death." his favorite coffee mug says "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need."

anyway you should always remember that all those foreigners you see dying on the news are just as real people as you are who have just as much interiority as you do. there is nothing about you that makes you more important and it is by pure chance that you are not in their position. in fact, this holds for all of history. every person, no matter the horror of the fate that befell them, had just as much interiority as you do. i feel like some people haven't fully internalized this.
