God, the situation is so shitty right now (regarding Russia and Ukraine). I wanted to tell you to stay safe and take care ♡
Thank you for your kindness, nonnie! <3 I wasn't much active recently because of health stuff, so I didn't expect anyone to still remember me. But thank you! And you too!
It's so shitty, really. I have been swinging between crying and having bouts of anger the whole day today. It just feels surreal. Like, why. What is even the reason. The point. Is he just demented? Is he playing with a few countries' well-being because it's fun? I hate this so much. Dammit, where is the death note when you need one. It's so childish but it keeps spinning in my head the whole day. Some people really make the world rot and really deserve to die. Sadly, they tend to live long in their bunkers and send other people to die instead.

To be honest, that line of being not able to love a woman because he looks down on everyone always makes me think that Ohba is quoting/lifted it from Dostoevsky. This place in “Crime and Punishment”, a dialogue between Raskolnikov’s buddy (think Matsuda, about the same personality) and Raskolnikov’s younger sister (think older Sayu) about him:
“You have said many curious things about my brother's character, and...have spoken impartially. That's good; I thought you were in awe of him,” Avdotya Romanovna observed with a smile. “It also seems true that he ought to have a woman around him,” she added pensively.
“I didn't say so, but perhaps you're right about that, too, only . . .”
“What?”
“He doesn't love anyone, and maybe he never will,” Razumikhin said bluntly.
“You mean he's unable to love?”
“And you know, Avdotya Romanovna, you resemble your brother terribly much, in everything even!” he suddenly blurted out, unexpectedly for himself, but, recalling what he had just told her about her brother, he immediately blushed like a lobster and became terribly embarrassed. Looking at him, Avdotya Romanovna could not help laughing.
I mean, some more about Raskolnikov:
A feeling of the deepest revulsion flashed for a moment in the young man's fine features. Incidentally, he was remarkably good-looking, taller than average, slender and trim, with beautiful dark eyes and dark blond hair. But soon he lapsed as if into deep thought, or even, more precisely, into some sort of oblivion, and walked on no longer noticing what was around him, and not wishing to notice. He only muttered something to himself from time to time, out of that habit of monologues he had just confessed to himself.
An anxiety with no object or purpose in the present, and in the future nothing but endless sacrifice, by means of which he would attain nothing - that was what his days on earth held in store for him... What good was life to him? What prospects did he have? What did he have to strive for? Was he to live merely in order to exist? But a thousand times before he had been ready to give up his existence for an idea, for a hope, even for an imagining. Existence on its own had never been enough for him; he had always wanted more than that. Perhaps it was merely the strength of his own desires that made him believe he was a person to whom more was allowed than others.
“Crime? What crime? ... My killing a loathsome, harmful louse, a filthy old moneylender woman who brought no good to anyone, to murder whom would pardon forty sins, who sucked the lifeblood of the poor, and you call that a crime ?”
Yeah. But he loves his family and falls in love later actually. When he drops his “believing he was a person to whom more was allowed than others” act.

@everyone who says that Light is a psychopath incapable of feeling love towards anyone. You can stop saying that he faked his affection towards his family and had no friends, now.
(Side note: notice how it specifically states "He's likely not capable of loving a woman."...)

I wouldn’t say they are equally bad morally, imo it’s more like they are the same type, but Light is an inverted Rodion as a character. Dostoevsky aimed to write a story of redemption, basically, of a raising of Lazarus. To show that even if you destroyed your soul, it still can be revived back. Ohba took C&P story bones but ran it the opposite direction - no redemption, once you fall you fall and once you die you die, no second chances.
Also, if Rodya got a notebook that can magically kill without trace, we don’t know how it would turn out. He dreamed of being Napoleon, of changing the world, after all, and killed a person to prove himself (and for personal profit, ofc, but that was secondary). And a killing notebook is a neat, distanced and easy way of doing that. And, well, if Light had an axe instead of a death note, he wouldn’t kill anyone in the first place. Killing a person with an axe is very very not the same as writing their name on a piece of paper while sitting in a cozy chair at home, all the gore and fear is much more traumatizing even for the murderer. And Rodya planned his first murder (and the second one was an accident), he was fully aware of what he’s doing. The pawnbroker wasn’t some great evil too, just an unpleasant old woman. While Light killed first two people coincidentally, not being aware that the notebook really works, and when he became aware, there was no way to undo that. But, ofc, if Rodya wasn’t living in extreme poverty etc, he probably wouldn’t plan to murder anyone either. Both of them are not the nicest people by nature, but both are not evil to their core by nature as well. The circumstances and their decisions shape them.
Imo, the main difference is - Rodya is older, he’s more self-aware, he saw lots of human suffering and suffered himself, and there are external circumstances helping him realize stuff (like, Marmeladovs are his personal lesson in empathy, etc). Light is significantly younger, very sure of himself, sheltered and emotionally distant, never really dealt with anything serious, and is used to dealing with problems by pretending he never fucks up and knows it all beforehand. So Rodion is able after making a mistake to realize it and admit it and turn back. Light makes a mistake and doubles down on it, and spirals down until the end. And where Dostoevsky then goes with all the social commentary and human drama, Ohba goes with detective cat and mouse games (making Porfiry-Petrovich-the-mind-reading-detective-without-a-last-name into a deuteragonist) and juggling the notebooks and stuff. Moral side of Death Note is shaky even in supposedly moral characters, that whole world feels like an asshole. And you can’t out-psychology Dostoevsky.
Misa has something of an inverted Sonya too, btw. Sonya is self-sacrificial and Misa is too, on the surface. Only Sonya self-sacrifices and ruins herself for the sake of her starving half-siblings and Misa is ready to self-sacrifice for the sake of a handsome guy if he agrees to date her. Sonya is a genuine devout Christian, and Misa owns tons of Christian paraphernalia but it’s just aesthetics to her. Sonya basically “breaks” Rodya into admitting things by being who she is, and Misa is unable so save anyone and needs a savior herself. Outcomes are pointedly different too - Rodya eventually falls for Sonya, moved by her inner strength (and they get to have a new beginning), and Light and Misa just mutually use each other to get what they want (and she kills herself after he’s killed).
out of all classic lit characters i think light yagami gets compared the most to raskolnikov and while i see the parallels i'm always like. do not dare imply they are equally bad morally in my presence. raskolnikov >>>> light don't @ me. rodya is objectively like significantly more pathetic but that's exactly what makes him superior

The more fics I read, the more I’m like, do I think Light is doing the right thing? nope! do I think he’s a good person in general? nope! do I think his crusade would be beneficial for the world? nope! do I want Light to win? absolutely!
I’m a simple person with simple tastes, I just like watching the world burn Light win and most “L wins” scenarios are kinda unsatisfying... Maybe I just read too many of them but they start to feel repetitive and “L negotiates with Rem and gets Light’s head in exchange for Misa’s freedom” is such a lazy plot twist. L would never! let her go so easily. And besides, Misa is just as guilty as Light is, so it’s a very dubious justice to throw one of them under the bus to spare the other.

hi! you’ve been in the fandom for some time so I was wondering: what are the most common misreadings of light you’ve seen?
I feel like when I am asked to list things, I always wind up forgetting most of them... but let's try!!
"Light is obsessed with being handsome, he spends 3 hours in front of the mirror daily" - I have no idea where this one comes from, it is not even remotely implied in the manga.
"Light wants to be a literal supernatural God" - no, godhood is a secular concept of absolute power to him.
"Light and Kira are separate personalities" - no, they're the same person with different experiences.
"Light was corrupted by the Death Note" - it's just a weapon, it doesn't corrupt any more than a gun does.
"Light doesn't love his family" - I've complained about this one so much already and I know the anime cuts out a lot of his affection for them, but... man.
"Light is so obsessed with following rules, he'd cry if he accidentally stole a pen or something" - Light cares about social appearances but he's not particularly hung up about being a 'good boy' when he's not within view.
"During the Yotsuba arc, Light admires L" - why would he? L's just ruined his life by being stubborn on what he thinks is a wrongful accusation. It's not particularly impressive stuff to him...
"Light never slept with Misa" - not that I think he particularly enjoyed it, but their relationship is pretty clearly sexual.
"Light indiscriminately kills people for minor offenses" - he canonically is the Kira who is most careful about victim selection.
"Light was stupid for only ever killing people with heart attacks, that's so obvious!!" - yes, congratulations, that was the whole plan he set up in the first episode of the show.....?
I think a lot of Light misreadings serve to turn him into a more simplified character who is thus easier to joke about - an understandable impulse, but annoying to see take over entirely.

Two minutes of Lelouch power-tripping and being an authoritarian asshole (actually, the sound is from “Call of Duty” and the crossover is weird but it’s strangely fitting)

Tbh, I think there was no way he would join Light. It all would go exactly the same, except Soichiro would shoot Light and not Matsuda. Which would be too dramatic in a heartbreaking sort of way. Both of them, Soichiro and Light, are the type of people to place their beliefs above stuff like family even if it breaks their hearts etc. Light kinda inherited/learned it from his dad.
Besides, I think that Matsuda shooting Light is a plottwist Ohba intended to write from the start. Though it’s just my favorite theory, but Light is sort of inverted Raskolnikov and Matsuda is his Razumihin. He has same personality. And, well, in CaP Raskolnikov eventually breaks down under his guilt and confesses (after some cat and mouse games with Porfiry Petrovich the detective) and is supported the whole time by sweet and cheery (and a bit naive) Razumihin who then marries his little sister and moves to Siberia to wait with Sonya while Raskolnikov serves his prison term, then they all supposedly live happily. Well, Light does not break down, kills his detective instead of confessing and eventually is shot down by sweet and cheery (and a bit naive) Matsuda who supported him the whole time. Like, Symbolism. Because it’s bad to be bad. And there is no god. And no pious prostitute with a heart of gold to fall for. Lmao.
AU, where Matsuda took the eye deal and died instead of Soichiro, and Soichiro didn’t die a few days later anyway. Now he is present during the showdown in the warehouse and has to decide if he joins Light to protect him against his own beliefs or if he stands up against his only son.

A random unsolicited rec: I ran into this fic some time ago and it’s a good revenge porn. I was in a mood for one, apparently. So, three days after the warehouse Ryuk gets bored and cranky without apples and he uses Death Eraser (yeah, yeah, I know). Light wakes up in a morgue and hits the ground running. There is some Light/Misa too but nothing explicit. I can almost believe into them like this. It’s incomplete but ends in a place where it isn’t very frustrating.
