Tumblr media
This is a full time job for Meritocracy, a company that has created a network for video makers and photographers, it helps photographers find jobs and portray companies by documenting day to day life.
Tumblr media
This is also a company helping people to find you in certain areas of photography while it seems that they manage you, it pays £100/ph
Screenshots of some job opportunities I have found by just searching “photography jobs Nottingham” and it would come up with a lists of jobs you can get.
Researching Job Opportunities
It is very hard to find job opportunities for photography as most of the time the people will find you.
I believe that one of the best ways to find Job is to ask around your fellow photographers to see if they know anything, however one of the best ways to find jobs is to promote yourself online.
Here are some jobs I found after a little bit of Googling:
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=photography+jobs+nottingham&rlz=1C1GCEB_enGB822&oq=photography+jobs+no&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0l5.10821j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&ibp=htl;jobs&safe=active&ssui=on#fpstate=tldetail&htidocid=a7tdy9AVJ6GA_j70AAAAAA%3D%3D&htivrt=jobs

Actual Interview
In this post, I will be talking about my experiences with the interviews, I have only attended three interviews as I believed they were the best universities for me to go to.
DeMonfort University (Leicester) - Unconditional
This university was my first choice and the first interview I went to, therefore I was very nervous but also a little excited.
As the course is about photography and video I had to show I am passionate about video even if I am only showing photographs in my portfolio.
To prepare for the interview I made sure I knew the names of some people who inspire my in both photography and video, I chose Chen Mann and Elle Mills, they are famous but not extremely well known.
The person who had interviewed me was very friendly so I felt like I could have a really good conversation with them about my work and photography, when I went into the interview I actually had a lot of fun talking about photos and videos.
Coventry University - Unconditional
My second interview was at Coventry, I was quite nervous for this interview as you do a group and individual interview, therefore I had drank some coffee before hand so I was a little hyper.
In the group interview you had to do a presentation about the photograph you believe is your best, I described my concept and the type of lighting I used within the studio and tried to answer questions I thought people my have about the photo before they were asked.
The individual interview was a lot less scary as it is one to one, or perhaps because I was a little hyper, this interviewer did not even asked to see my photos so I led my way into showing them as I believe it is a lot easier to talk about the photos when the interviewer can visualise them. They seemed to really like my photos, especially my portraits in a studio and had said one of them was the best he had seen in a long time (my pumpkin head photograph).
Sheffield Hallam University - Conditional
This was my last university interview, as I decided to withdrew from to others.
This interview did not go as well for me, strange as I had some experience with university interviews by then, however I believe it was because I was not in the best of moods as my back and stomach was hurting quite a bit. I talked about my work and how cosplay factors into photography.
We had a little tour around the uni with the student ambassador dad the university did look quite nice and modern but also very, very big and the lifts were confusing to use.
The questions that all universities has asked
“Why do you want to go to this university?”
“Which photographers inspire you?”
“Can you talk about your favourite/best photograph?”
Talk about your photographs and why you took them
“Why do you take photographs?”
“What do you aspire to be as a photographer?”

The Universities I had applied to and hearing back from them
For me, I had applied to five different Universities; Nottingham Trent, Manchester, Sheffield Hallam, De Monfort and Coventry.
I chose to do this because I wanted to make sure I could go to at least one university, and I then I got invited to go to an interview for all five universities therefore I decided to withdraw from two as they didn’t fully inspire me to go there.
Four of the universities had replied to me via email giving me a booking form so I could choose a date and time that would suit me out of the three dates they have offered, however Nottingham had only given me a letter with the date and time I had to go to an interview, although they did give me a number I could call to try to change it however there is a possibility that they say no.

Planning for University Interviews - Photography
Planning
Practice answering some of the common photography questions and talk about your work so you won’t have long pauses between sentences and questions.
You should also pack the night before so that you are less likely to forget something, you should bring a portfolio and a sketchbook.
Clothing
Since photography is an artistic course, you don’t need to wear anything too formal as it is more about your photographs and personality to see if the course is right for you, however if you are entering a fashion photography course, or a university that talks a lot about fashion, it would be good to dress a little better than just jeans and a t-shirt.
Portfolio and a piece of writing
A portfolio is essential for a photography interview as most universities will want to see it, therefore make sure you choose a variety of photos, along with some of your favourites and best looking. Some universities will also ask for a piece of writing, like an essay or a proposal, however you could just take a piece out of your sketchbook.

Professional Roles and Responsibilities
Being involved in the photographic industry requires many considerations, not just taking images.
Some of them are:
Computer Skills. You need to be able to Photoshop, or at least know the basics, as there will be photographs that you like but it lacks a little something. You also need to know how to look after your photographs on the computer as you are more likely to be using digital cameras so there will be a lot of moving the images around.
Business Skills. If you have no business skills then your business may be in trouble, you need to learn how to send invoices and taxes while advertising. Make sure to research all the legal requirements and insurances you should get within the photography industry.
Communication is an important part in running a business as it helps you be organised and understand what the client wants and understands for a photoshoot. It will also help you in meetings with others so you can pitch your work to potential employers.
Organisation is super essential so that all the other skills I have spoken about will go smoothly. It is not just about ordering folders in the scheme of the alphabet, it’s about knowing your timetable and managing it accordingly, making sure that you have all the equipment for a certain photoshoot or even making your digital folders easy to access. Being organised helps to keep your business afloat as well as looking very professional!
Apart from those skills, there is so many different roles in the industry for photographers:
Managers help plan all the photoshoots and make sure they will go fluently and with little stress as possible. It is often they will be leading a team of people to make sure they are doing their jobs correctly.
Freelance photographers run their own business and find their own jobs, they often work by themselves but sometimes collaborates with others for weddings or big company hires.
Assistants help set up all the lighting for the photoshoots according to what the manager or photographer has told them to, they are often given all the odd and practical jobs to do.
Photo-shoppers often retouch and edit the photos to enhance the effect or make it look nice, this could be an easy edit such as changing the levels a little, to photoshopping a tattoo off someone's body, to make the model/product look like it is in a fantasy planet far, far away from Earth.
Researchers are generally given tasks way before the photoshoot as they help as lot with the planning, the research can range from finding the most cheapest but good quality equipment you can hire to finding the most historically correct handkerchief in 1933, so that the photos will be as historically accurate as possible.

University Courses
There are many different universities with many different courses to choose.
For photography there are a few different types that I have found:
Photography this means that you can explore and learn about all the different genres of photography and learn which kind of photography is best for you, this includes darkroom not just digital (although that depends on the facilities that the university posses).
Fashion Photography if you have already decided to pursue that path of fashion photography you can choose to focus on this kind of photography, learning the many different techniques that will help in the industry.
Photography and Video some universities also offer studying video alongside photography, this means that you will get to learn the general knowledge and special techniques with both formats
Marine and Natural History Photography, one university I have found even does a course in marine and history photography. You would need to be in a good condition as you may need to learn how to scuba dive in order to take photos underwater.

I have now created a Behance account and have posted my photos for my online portfolio.
https://www.behance.net/trinityhou5b43
I have broken the images into sections and named them Portfolio, (and then the content within the sections) this is because the grid option does not really work as it just mixes up all the images and ruins the presentation, the other option was to upload all the images separately on the same post however that means you would have to scroll really far down as some of the images can be pretty long as well as there being many photographs.
Online Portfolio
I have created a portfolio via Instagram, I believe that it is hard to have a portfolio on here as you need to keep uploading photographs so that you gain some recognition.
Here is a link to the account:
https://www.instagram.com/rei_hoult_photography/
I shall be uploading image every few days so that I have not uploaded all my photographs at once as I want to use this platform to promote, therefore if i post them all together they will get lost as they go down the timeline.
