Mermay Day 4: Aquarius ♒

Welcome to week two of Mermay! Today's sign is Aquarius, an independent and unconventional sign. Those born under Aquarius are usually free spirited and eccentric individuals, as ever changing as the water she bears

Aquarius is our second sign ruled by two planets, traditionally Saturn and in modern astrology, Uranus. I intended to use the three circles in this piece to house the two planets and the constellation, but Uranus is such a vibrant color that it felt incredibly unbalanced anywhere I put it. Saturn also felt very out of place with the cool Aquarius color palette, so my solution was to combine the two planets, which is why you see the shape of Saturn behind the octopus colored with Uranus' vibrant blue

I hid Uranus' planetary symbol in this piece, since I already used Saturn for Sagittarius. For some reason Uranus has two symbols, ⛢ and ♅ so there's a little bit of an added challenge to finding it this time, let me know in the comments when you do!

I have to mention I actually had a LOT of fun with the flowers on this one! Aquarius is associated with orchids, and I currently have a beautiful white orchid in full bloom that I got to reference up close! I think they matched beautifully with the vibes of the whole piece

I'm really just very happy with this piece overall, after the struggle I went through with Capricorn, I was surprised that most of the colors I laid out for Aquarius made it to the final product with very minimal changes

Who's ready for week 2 of Mermay!

Is it only week 2?? My goodness I've been working so hard to get this year's done it feels like the month should be close to ending already 😖

Mermay Day 2: Sagittarius ♐

Those born under the sign Sagittarius are known for being optimistic, adventurous, and morally sound. Their ruling planet is Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, whose size is referenced in this piece by taking up most of the backdrop. The planetary symbol ♃ can also be found in the shape of the bow and crossed arrows the mermaid is holding (The crossed arrows also double as the symbol for Sagittarius ♐)

Sagittarius' most recognizable symbol is the centaur archer, which of course is represented by the drawn golden bow the mermaid is wielding, and also by the shape and pose of her tail, which is meant to resemble a centaurs back. The curl of the tail is also meant to slightly resemble a seahorse, which is a little nautical play on the horse theming.

I've also included the constellation for Sagittarius at the bottom of the background, as well as a rearing horse to really hammer in the horse imagery associated with the sign. The colors of this piece were based mainly on the color palette associated with Sagittarius, purple and yellow, with pink carnations, Sagittarius' flower, to tie the colors together.

Mermay Day 3: Capricorn ♑

People born under the sign Capricorn are known for their ambition and practicality, often adverse to change and slaves to their routine, they're ruled by the planet Saturn, depicted here floating directly below the mermaid's head.

I've been hiding the planetary symbols for the ruling planet in each piece and I'm curious if anyone can find them. They're not hidden too hard but let me know in the comments if you find it!

I have to say this one was a REAL struggle! I don't know what went so wrong but I was having a lot of trouble getting the colors to work. I think because I initially wanted the sky behind the mast to be a deep blue, but Capricorn's colors are blues and greys, and I couldn't find a way to get the colors to mesh well. I think it finally clicked when I decided to let go of the blue sky and made it a rusty sunset color, everything else just sort of fell into place after that

I also added Capricorns flower, Pansies, crawling up the sides of the frame. Those were much less tedious to draw than Sagittarius' carnations, but much more difficult to color! The flowers were one of the main reasons nothing was looking cohesive 😭

Overall I am really happy with how it turned out in the end! It may have put me way behind schedule with all the extra tweaking I put into it, but right now I'm thinking it's worth it cuz she might be my favorite piece so far!

Mermay Day 1: Scorpio ♏

Those born under the sign of Scorpio are said to be very intense, passionate, and often mysterious individuals. In modern astrology, Scorpio is one of the handful of signs ruled by two planets, Mars and Pluto, pictured in the top corners of the background of this piece. However, Scorpio's primary ruling planet is Mars, who's planetary symbol can be seen represented by the circle in the background combined with the mermaid's trident.

Scorpio is most recognizably symbolized by a scorpion, which can be seen alongside the Scorpius constellation in the background of this piece. The mermaid herself is also modeled after a scorpion, with exaggerated sharp ears and a spikey crown to allude to their most prominent features. Her tail is also segmented like a scorpions back, accented with stripes in the shape of it's legs, and curled at the fluke into the shape of a scorpions stinger. Her hair is also raised and curled to mimic their signature tail.

Lastly the colors of this piece were inspired by the deep reds and earthy tones associated with Scorpio, with a dash of cooler blues and purples to allude to the sign's water alignment. As a last minute decision, I decided to try filling out the bottom of the frame with some geranium flowers, which is the flower associated with Scorpio. Floral imagery plays a huge roll in art nouveau, so I think I'm gonna try and add each signs flower to their piece as I go!
