yeah maybe a bit of a hot take but i personally found the last scene boring.

i think probably from the writers' pov it was the easiest way to create some direct face-offs and bring to the fore various aspects of these characters' interpersonal dynamics, but at the same time it was long. and i know it might sound stupid to criticise a long fight sequence in a show about karate and fighting, but it got so long with such little break that it was, truthfully, boring. you could certainly have broken it up or used the fighting more cleverly.

so yeah, bit of a lazy catch-all for the writers to explore what they wanted and then make the final scene a shock and seem like more of a shock because it goes from unadulterated anarchy to horrified stunned silence

just caught up with cobra kai in its entirety and i'm just wondering if the production team had a huge budget to blow on stunts or something and if so is that what i have to blame (thank?) for the all-out mob at the end? if not i'm just uh wondering why so if anyone has any insight please let me know because giving kwon a knife is CRAZY work and somehow that wasn't even the most insane part of the episode and i think this is the most too stunned to speak i have ever been rendered by a tv show

i lowkey think that was the point though? no one could stand his guts, and he was an unlikable arsehole (as you said, kudos to brandon h lee for that), but he was still a kid. and karate is a contact sport that can lead to injury, often serious injury, but in a competition environment, nobody should be dying.

daniel didn't like the kid, and yet he could see the mistake that was being made bringing a knife to fistfight (or in this case literally hundreds of simultaneous fistfights in a small space) and was trying his utmost to stop it.

the point is that loss of human life through karate is tragic, not because of who died but because it happened at all. it's also meant to highlight how far gone everyone is losing their minds over this competition, and with the background of miyagi having killed someone in this same competition, contribute to daniel's internal conflict, helping him realise the magnitude of what mr miyagi did. and also that history repeats itself (this may be extremely pertinent if leaks turn out to be true...)

plus, yeah, for plot reasons you couldn't have a character we actually cared about dying, otherwise we'd see how ridiculous it is that the competition continues after one of the competitors has literally died (!!!?????!!!?!?)

one of the lowkey craziest things about the massive fight scene was that it took kwon STABBING himself and literally DYING for gunther to finally yell "cut the feed". bitch your supposedly dignified and prestigious tournament at the pinnacle of competitive karate descended into all out anarchy, and it's been livestreamed internationally, plus you've been conscious long enough to have shut it down immediately, and only then when everyone has literally watched him die does it occur to you to end the feed???

i know the cobra kai writers have set up a bajillion storylines and have so, so many relationships to explore, but i wish we could see more of robby's relationship with daniel. hello robby literally lived in his home, and daniel looked after him like a son?????

and it would be so easy because daniel is literally his sensei! show him giving robby a pep talk! hugging him to congratulate him after a good fight! or reassure him after a bad one! just slip in a moment to remind robby that he's loved by both of his senseis and also that daniel has an emotional stake in his club and his students beyond his daughter sam and late sensei mr miyagi!!!!

cobra kai hot take: demetri is only at the sekai taikai because he's your token quippy-funny character who's unafraid to speak his mind and so is the best person to come out with the sassy one-liners the writers seem to love so much
