Thanks to everyone who made it out to wonderful @talongallery for our opening last Friday! Such an honor to show with Josh Keyes, one of my all time favorite artists @joshkeyes.art! ...🎆💒🎇... ‘Connection’ (scroll to see details) 2 Geranium Plume Moths, 30” x 31” acrylic on panel. Moths suspended mating with pulsating glowing pheromones. Most of us know what it feels like to use our senses to feel our way around in the dark, searching for interior and exterior union. With each relationship we explore we discover a new world. Through this process of give and receive, we achieve the greatest intimacy by remaining open and vulnerable. This painting explores relationships, metamorphosis and the continual discovery of self. Moths use their sensitive antennae to detect sex pheromones with their fuzzy receptors to attract mates over long distances. In the painting I included mostly native moths to the PNW, like the tiger moth, sphinx moth, and ceanothus moth. 🦋🦋🦋 #talongallery #aether #mothpainting (at Talon Gallery)

Opening this Friday May 4th @talongallery Portland, OR. 🐍Detail: new ‘Air’ painting. Underneath the sage green lichen and wet moss, a shy Coast garter snake (Thamnophis elegans terrestris) fearfully hides in the safety of it’s rocky home from the light above. Crawling around the base of the flower is the brilliant Golden Buprestid (Buprestis aurulenta) migrated from the California Sierras. I tried to construct this image around the Octohedron, symmetrically balancing hope and fear. #talongallery #coastgartersnake #goldenbuprestid (at Talon Gallery)

Detail* of a new painting called ‘Air’, part of my ‘5 Elements of Nature’ series showing this Friday May 4th at @talongallery Talon Gallery in Portland, OR. The Calochortus tiburonensis, the Tiburon Mariposa Lily, is a very rare flower endemic to my home in Marin County, California, where it is known only from one population on Ring Mountain. The sprightly little yellow Wilson’s Warblers beautiful song indicates another first sign of spring where I live. I painted the bird with it’s bill open, singing its heart out to convey a sense of hope and ambition for it’s long migration ahead. As I pack my bags for Portland, I admire the ability to migrate across the entire PNW on itsy bitsy yellow wings (no baggage). Showing May 4th @talongallery This Black-backed woodpecker (Picoides arcticus), is one of the rarest birds in California, and lately it has become a symbol of a huge scientific and political debate over the future of controlling fire in American forests. This woodpecker specializes in foraging for insects after a fire, such as the larvae of the Banded Alder Borer (Rosalia funebris) and the Sculpted Pine Borer (Chalcophora angulicollis) featured in my painting. WIP - painted a native PNW Salt Marsh Moth (Estigmene acrea). Males have internal structures called coremata, which they inflate for scenting behaviors when searching for a mate. They also have “sex-scales”, fuzzy patches all over their body. Can’t shake this Moth obsession. Painted one of my favorites into my work in progress: a life-size highly variable Hyalophora euryalus (ceanothus silkmoth) common on the west coast from BC to Baja. Influenced by the moon, These creatures emit powerful pheromones over remarkable distances to find a mate in the dark.
